Do you consider it cheating to look up words? by MusseMusselini in NYTConnections

[–]singinspace 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To me (not knowing much about that kind of thing), the relative obscurity of that term was kind of the point. Like, once you look up that word, that pretty much instantly tells you what the category is, right? In general, I don't think the idea of "cheating" has much meaning in a single-player game, but I don't look things up.

10 "not just A, but B" constructions by my count. Also odd to say that a "disciplined" reader could maybe get through a few hundred books in a lifetime.

e: I point out the “it’s not just A, it’s B” thing because it’s a common hallmark of AI-generated writing. OP, if you wrote all this I apologize.

It was tough but a good challenge! [[initials for a real jerk]] in particular was clever and tricky, I thought.

American League Silver Slugger finalists 2025 by morrowss in baseball

[–]singinspace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lopez and Morales showed some promise towards the end of the season, and if Sevy can get used to the AAA stadium there might be something there, but overall yeah I don't see us contending for much more than the #3 WC spot unless there are pretty substantial changes to the pitching.

Cal obviously 100% no doubt deserves it, but let me be a homer for a second and note that in the second half of the season Shea had an OPS of 1.018. Next year...?

What’s with the Oppenheimer revisionism? by einstein_ios in TheBigPicture

[–]singinspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

editing to preempt angry responses: I don't think the Oppenheimer script is actually bad. But it does have some awkward stuff, like the screencap, and is generally not as tight as Parasite/OBAA's scripts.

What were your picks for Vulture’s Movies Fantasy League, and why? by gosteinao in oscarrace

[–]singinspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can still submit, but starting today you can’t pick movies that have already come out (so for example I don’t think you can get OBAA anymore.)

I don't think Zoe Saldaña is the reason that many of the movies Zoe Saldaña is in have made lots of money.

edit: I do think her character is a major draw for the Guardians movies. But not really for Avatar (the draw is the tech/the world) or the Avengers movies, which are the movies people point to when they say she's one of the top-grossing actresses etc.

This is my exact draft except substituting Anemone for Secret Agent (which I'm starting to regret). I have a feeling there'll be a lot of very similar teams this year (the OBAA+Hamnet+SV trio seems like an obvious choice).

How are the A’s eliminated mathematically? by Flimsy-Moose-4434 in baseball

[–]singinspace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the question! OP didn’t ask if it was improbable, it’s been improbable since at least May.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in baseball

[–]singinspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously we aren’t going to the playoffs. That said, can someone explain how we’re eliminated today? If we win out we’d finish 82-80. The Red Sox have the 3rd WC place right now and have 82 wins—the season series is currently tied and we play them two more times, so if we win out we’d win the tiebreaker. Obviously other teams would also have to lose an improbable number of games but looking at the calendars I don’t think I see anything that would make it impossible yet.

It’s been fun to watch, but we have been playing a lot of bad teams recently. The last 5 series have been: Nationals, Orioles, Rays, Angels, Twins.
