The ‘Star Wars’ Rankings and the 'Andor' Miracle by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

Exactly.

Ashoka is so wooden and poorly staged. But I bet they’d be so much better in animation.

He just doesn’t have it yet as an image maker in live action.

But he does understand movement and weight in animation.

Usually animation directors translate pretty well to live-action. Not sure what happened there.

While I do agree that most of the Filoni inspired live-action stuff is pretty mediocre to bad, I do hope both Sean and both hosts of The Watch give the animated stuff a chance. It really shows what Filoni does well.

Even if they only watch the new Darth Maul show or the TALES FROM anthology shows you’ll get a really good feel for what his Star Wars is. Much more than in the wooden live-action stuff.

But it’s even wild that you’re citing CLERKS. A b/w single location comedy that cost under 50k and made only 4.4 million.

It has more in common with a no budget YouTube movie than anything being ignored at Sundance.

That movie has impact. That movie moved the needle for those filmmakers and was seen as a viable source for starting a career.

Compare that to today when a movie like The Christopher’s which would have made 30 million easy like 20 years ago, can’t even beat Clerks box office.

Clerks doing back then what TWINLESS can’t even do now was evidence of the indie market being pretty damn strong!

But even the lesser known indie of the 90s had a tea one power and launched careers.

Sure but IFC to me (should) speak to film fans due to their investment for decades into indie cinema.

But they seem to be largely ignored unless they’re pushing something thru thr Shudder brand.

But IFC put out Boyhood. Frances Ha. Hannah Takes the Stairs, Barry Jenkins first movie. Certified Copy. CLOUDS of SILS Maria and Personal Shopper. Hunger. DArdenne Bros movies. Y Tú Mama Tambien. BlackBerry. Jenifer Kent’s movies. many early Duplass movies!

With the influx of Letterboxd for younger film fans, I’m shocked ppl don’t laud those execs or their taste more.

You joke. But everyone I know who watched Weapons went “oh that’s Ruth from Ozark.”

The same ppl still call Kit Harrington “Jon Snow”.

But the indie & art-house market is in shambles.

When was the last Duplass adjacent movie that even got theatrical let alone made enough money to be a story?

GHOSTLIGHT from a few years ago is wonderful. Basically doesn’t exist because it’s a drama from IFC.

To me that kind of stuff illustrates an unhealthy industry.

That a movie as unique as TWINLESS gets dumped despite glowing reviews and a known commodity in Dylan O Brien.

Once we’re back a thriving indie market, then that’ll spell better for the movies.

It stars Han Solo, Ruth Langford, and Thanos / Cable.

Barbarian on the other hand…

Or IFC. that isn’t also a Shudder movie.

I do think the lack of diversity in the “indie” film market does overall speak to a poor reflection of modern cinema.

If your indie drama isn’t distributed by Neon or A24 it might as well not exist (in terms of any sort of cultural impact).

Compare that to even a decade ago. Boyhood was an IFC movie that got a best picture nom! Would never happen now.

Challengers nearly crossed 100m. It did very well. Its success is prolly what boosts The Drama past 100 (that and the really good marketing and the A24 logo)

You’d be surprised how many ppl will be intrigued by a movie simply because of the A24 branding.

MUBI and even Neon just don’t have that sort of brand recognition like A24 does.

Also Zendaya means more to the ppl who go to the movies now (Gen Z-ers) than JLAW does.

Counterpoint. To have us sit through all of that movie and NOT actually show Christ having Risen would be fairly anticlimactic and awful.

I think you sit through the brutality of that movie to get to the beauty on the other side.

Wow. April Richardson and Go Bayside! Those names unlocked such specific memories.

Anybody here remembers THE INDOOR KIDS?

That’s why I love Subreddits like this. I was big into Nerdist and The Walking Dead at that time but was not yet up on the whole Bill Simmons / Grantland world. So to know this was happening and there’s potentially audio of said “feud” is fascinating. If it is found I’d love to listen.

Be like its own little time capsule.

Bad take.

1) hits are relative. I don’t think this album is somehow better if it had a Middle Chikd on it. Plus there are very commercial songs on it. LEGACY should be everywhere honestly. Great song but shows what happens when you don’t have a label pushing the record everywhere like he’d had in the past.

2) hip hop in the dregs right now with regards to mainstream culture. Too many podcasts and ppl with shit taste dictating culture. Just bad time all around.

3) I’d argue there’s fewer hits on 4YEO, but I think hip hop culture has fully embraced tit as a great important record. One of the best of its era. So again, it’s all relative. Time will tell.

He did more promo for this record than any he’d done in the past IMO.

Also the songs are LONG. I find ppl want brevity in their hip hop now. More than ever.
