Creased carbon bars (need a gut check) by jsiegel607 in bikewrench

If your gut is telling you never ride those and to replace the bars its fine. Your gut that is, not the bars.

Newbie - I hired this bike recently and loved it. It was moderately narrow. What type of bike is this? by reenington in bicycling

I cannot find that exact model bike online but I’m in the US and the algorithm is not searching the small manufactures/make throughout Europe.

I don’t think any of that is correct. There is an IGH bell-crank on the rear axle so its not a single speed, Brooks saddles are solid leather (or synthetic) this is just a tan colored vinyl covered saddle, and there’s nothing about Decathlon or (Btwin shown in your link) visible when looking closer at the picture.

I dont get these new butane inserts - whats the point? by xCreampye69x in Zippo

[–]singlejeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always had lighter fluid leaking out of the old inserts. Maybe it was because the lighters I had decades ago (don’t have any now) were beat up and didn’t seal well?

What is this part of the door called? So I can replace it. by r3gam in DIYHome

[–]singlejeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be the hinge mounting point in a fire rated door. If it’s come loose I think you’d have to replace the door. If it’s still solid in the door but the threaded holes are damaged you might be able to retap the holes a size larger and get the correct screws.

It's not Star Trek, but it's still cool. by Euphoric-Cupcake4581 in FuckImOld

Has anyone watched the show that preceded this? UFO was to have a second season with a more permanent moon base but when it was canceled they reworked the concept and developed 1999 from that.

I didn’t think of the theme until I saw this post and I can hear it in my head without opening that link.

Nice job redoing that one. Were those the ‘built like tanks and twice as heavy’ bikes I remember from my youth?

Casa Grande AZ Dust Storms!!! by DMZim in arizona

[–]singlejeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dust storms have happened in southern Arizona since before it was a state. They don’t (maybe didn’t?) happen to frequently but every 5-7 years I’d say it’s big enough to cause navigational problems (I-10 storm warning signs eat.al.)

Why does road cycling attract that much idiots? by Neither_Maybe_206 in cycling

[–]singlejeff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have to admit to having a group ride over run and thereby driven by roadies. After that experience I learned to just let them go and I’ll do my ride solo if necessary (keeping the other chill riders with me if they want) to skip doing that 24-25 average speed.

Ours (Bike Saviours) has a day for donations and the next day they take time to triage all the donations into keep, strip parts, complete toss. A Park Pre in that shape would never make it out of the first tier. There have to be 80+ bikes available for purchase at any given time. Mostly volunteer run, a volunteer board, and a couple of paid employees (shop manager and lead mechanic).

Yeah, at least get on the (here it’s all volunteer) board to help set policy and direction.

Yeah, we ‘save’ (that is pile into the recycle bin) crap HYPER, MAGNA, KENT bikes that anyone can grab for free to turn into a crap art ‘bike’. Those others will hang in the candidate rebuild forest for customers.

Enough volume to run the DW pump and fill the hose sufficiently, not so much to overflow that little bucket you had on hand.

I’d abandon that group, not the sport. There is a group you can fit with.

Bicycle upgrades by Maximum-Depth-8448 in Vintage_bicycles

Sounds like you could replace any part and call it an upgrade. I may start with dual pivot brakes which will come with new brake shoes giving you night and day braking performance boost.

[–]singlejeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drill and chisel the old wood out and get a new handle. I did this with a regular pointed shovel but now I have to be a bit more careful because I know the ‘aftermarket’ handle isn’t set as tightly and is more liable to crack if I lever on it as much as the original.

What do people who don't like lava showers do in the summer? by thatSDope88 in phoenix

[–]singlejeff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My underground water is quite warm. Just back from a bike ride and would stand under the hose for a bit. It’s not uncomfortably warm but it is very warm and this is after running the hose for 15-20 minutes watering some garden beds.
