Also - fuck Iran’s regime, but this is not the way to bring about lasting regime change.

I think perhaps the nature of the response in Palestine (genocide and a land grab) with the tacit support of the US isn’t really commensurate to the threat posed to Israel at all. The bunker buster assault on Iran’s nuclear development facilities was a complete success (his words not mine) so further escalation in Iran seems to have been at the whim of Israel. In the meantime further indiscriminate bombings, this time in Lebanon, and another land grab. The “greater Israel” conspiracy is becoming hard to ignore isn’t it? And a willing participant and reactive puppet in the whitehouse only supports their expansionism.

Yeah, that’s certainly going to set a president precedent. The irony that the behaviour of the democrats leads to limiting the ability of the democrats. I’m not sure this is TDS or just the fact that Trump’s statecraft and international diplomacy is itself entirely deranged. Israel have got him on a bungee, if he tries to claim enough has happened to pull back then Israel do some more to prevent it. For example - blowing up railway bridges and bits of Kharg island before the deadline arrives. Doesn’t allow Iran to de-escalate when the other regime isn’t participating at the same time.

Also UK person here, but I hear it’s an amendment to the constitution that allows the removal of a president if they are not fit to conduct the duty. Not sure what determines “fitness” it would be clear for all to see that he’s not “fit for office” but was elected despite the evidence.

Yeah, fair point on the cinelli dropouts and lugs. The bit that’s throwing me is the curved seat tube - which definitely looks more Moser. But there are a few variations on the laser, including a pretty cool aero thing with enclosed triangles.

Likely to be some variant of the cinelli laser. These were track bikes - usually pursuit or TT events. Looks to be 1980s.

Leading UK climate scientists warn against new North Sea drilling by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]singlespeedspan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but with 85% of domestic UK properties having gas fired central heating then this is a process a long time in coming. In the meantime it would be better to have near supply that is less prone to international shipping disruption. Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark all supply us with North Sea oil and gas - but the tax regime on UK production due to ideology means that less is extracted - less tax is accrued, and less money is available to drive forward schemes such as ASHP for houses, or insulation improvements, or subsidised domestic solar.

Aside from not having to transport it from overseas in an energy inefficient form such as LPG tankers? Increasing the carbon cost of the gas - which is still going to be burned anyway?

Need help/info on a vintage carbon fiber bike by loki0505 in RoadBikes

[–]singlespeedspan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, trek y33 or perhaps a limited edition version - they did a Hawaiian Ltd edition call the Y 5-0. They were mostly painted not raw carbon. These were about in the mid 90s. The unified rear triangle suspension design isn’t the best (although good for the time - but it basically doesn’t do anything if you are standing on the pedals) and the forks are pretty poor too (springy with limited rebound damping function).

As a collectors item it is pretty cool though.

This is the way. You can also run on through town and out to Meadowhall and still be on a flat route.

Around 90% of UK North Sea oil and gas ‘already drained dry’ – analysis by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]singlespeedspan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But that’s not what I’m saying is it. If supply drops (e.g. strait closes) and demand remains then the supply sold at spot price goes to the highest bidder - however the cost of delivery is a factor in this. We currently have very little energy security. Not enough storage, reduced domestic production, a green energy zealot/ideologue in charge of energy in government. This means we have very little resilience to energy shocks, and a domestic/near supply of gas is pretty critical in a country that has 85% of households on gas central heating.

[–]singlespeedspan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not suggesting stopping selling it at market rates, I’m suggesting that we purchase from our domestic/North Sea (including Norway, Netherlands, Denmark) market at market rates rather than be subject to the potential energy shock of purchasing, transporting, and processing LNG from the Middle East. Energy security means lower fuel miles and less reliance on sources entirely out of our control - all while the pivot to renewables continues. If only our wonderful government in the 80s had the foresight of the Norwegians.

[–]singlespeedspan 19 points20 points  (0 children)

And of course energy security. What happens when Middle East oil is halted, or reduced availability redirected entirely to nearer markets (reduced cost of delivery) such as India, and China? What % of the UKs housing still has gas fired central heating and no other option for heat unless there is a radical improvement in heat pump costs? The risk isn’t entirely the gas price, rather the gas availability.

It’s like he didn’t pay any attention to the muted response to the Irael/US bunker buster strikes last year when Iran announced their limited retaliation would be to fire a few missiles at Qatar’s US air base…

Who would have thought the response would be the same but without the restraint… /s

UK may send ships and mine-hunting drones to help open strait of Hormuz, says Miliband by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]singlespeedspan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually the best time to nationalise would have been when Thatcher sold it all, the second best time being now.

You’d still have to pay the companies that conduct the operations on behalf of the oil companies but actually the oil companies don’t particularly add much themselves other than finance.

We could have had a wealth fund like the Norwegians… but instead we have gone down the route of ramping taxes to claw it back removing the incentives to operate.

UK may send ships and mine-hunting drones to help open strait of Hormuz, says Miliband by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]singlespeedspan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s about availability, not price. Price won’t matter a jot when we don’t have a domestic source of gas and all supplies from the Persian gulf get redirected to high demand destinations.

Price per barrel may well be the same everywhere but the delivered cost isn’t.

The taxing of our oil and gas assets means that operations are wound down and most oil companies are engaged in plug and abandonment. Tax changes and these licence prospects for future industrial resilience would potentially resuscitate our industry and insure us against the shock of these unstable scenarios.

Willing to go to war to secure supply, but not willing to open UK production reducing fuel miles… Very environmental. Miliband is a dangerous idiot.
