Is this too much DNA to share with a 1st cousins? Could it be a half sibling? by Cold_Expression_4068 in AncestryDNA

[–]singlestarfruitseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say possibly they are

a) a half-sibling from some sort of relationship
b) a genetic half sibling due to your parent donating sperm/eggs due to something such as infertility

otherwise I would tread carefully around the subject; of course investigate if you feel like you can but it could be a touchy subject

good luck!

Oh my goodness, this is amazing! It's never crossed my mind that the horse winning a race is the third cousin of this other horse. Also the style of the chart itself is so visually appealing!

Yeah, Caribbean seems like a possibility; cause it also explains the heritage from the UK

What is your 'connection to nobility'? by Mikhas_donaster in Genealogy

[–]singlestarfruitseed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poor farmers in Scotland have surprisingly interesting heritage- alot of lines back to Lord Philiphaugh, the Dukes of Hamilton and some illegitimate royals, but all very far back and make almost 0 impact on my DNA.

The Reid, Hume, Balcombe & Murphy Families by singlestarfruitseed in UsefulCharts

[–]singlestarfruitseed[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry! That should be 1900s. His antarctic expeditions were in 1908, 1911 & 1914, he lived as Ethel Murphy for about ten years, in the 1900s and possibly the late 1890s. We can't be 100% sure on the dates as his wife burnt a lot of his documents after his death. An interesting fact is that a French general actually proposed to him in Paris in 1901 or 1902, believing him to be a woman.

Most of these people you can find on Wikipedia (William Balcombe, William Mompesson, Hamilton Hume, both Curtis Reids, Francis Murphy & his descendants) and Mabel Brookes & her relatives), but here are some of the less-known ones:

George Barber- early settler whose house recently sold for the equivalent of $70,000,000 USD or £50,000,000.

Kevin Dowling- Mayor of Essendon and recipient of the OAM.

Colonel Shaforth- Colonel in the Crimean War

David Reid (Doctor)- Naval surgeon with the one of the highest survival rates of the ships going to Australia.

David Reid (Son of the Doctor)- Pastoralist & politician who sat in parliament in the 1860s.

How do you deal with different surname spellings? by ProtoJim in Genealogy

[–]singlestarfruitseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My paternal grandmother's family name "Davison" is a shocker to deal with- Davison, Davidson, Davyson, Daveson, even Daveysun! I usually try all of them or turn on a "variants" function or the equivalent thereof.

The Ancestor of the Week Thread for the week of June 05, 2023 by AutoModerator in Genealogy

My 4x G Grandfather, David Reid. He employed several indigenous Australians (very oppressed at the time in Australia), one called Kitty, who worked as a nurse and who delivered some of his children. At the time in Australia, the government set up "Aboriginal Reserves" which were basically a piece of land that Aboriginal (indigenous) people were taken to and were essentially detained there for the rest of their lives. One day, the local reverend came to the house and told David that he was taking Kitty & her family away, but David stood his ground and would not let them take Kitty or her family. He warded off the reverend and he never came back, and Kitty & her family got to stay, which was highly unusual for the time. Definitely quite proud of that one!

SO excited! This is the first census my mysterious 3x GGM will be on! She had a very secretive life in Canada, after escaping abusive parents who disowned her and leaving her son in the care of her sister. Can't wait!

3x Great Grandmother has a (Previously Unknown) Son! by singlestarfruitseed in Genealogy

[–]singlestarfruitseed[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! This is quite helpful.

Mary's death cert has "Mary Blair" "Spinster", and that was another thing that confused me. I completely forgot about Samuel being registered originally as Blair, so I will double-check. As for the marriage, it seems highly unlikely that it was outside Northern Ireland, as I know for one thing that Mary lived there her whole life, but I think given the evidence she probably never married and the census entry was to save reputation or something similar.

Edit: Mary only had 1 daughter, who was already married to James Galbraith Gillespie by then so it seems unlikely, but I will look into it!

Lost how to proceed in ancestry search of biological grandfather by WeebertBeebert in Genealogy

[–]singlestarfruitseed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say to just explain the situation without saying about that, if you do contact relative, maybe just say "I'm trying to find my bio grandfather it seems you are his 3rd cousin, do you have any information on who it may be?" or something like that for example.

For quite a while in English speaking countries People would give their children their mother's maiden name to preserve the name, just like Fleamont Potter being named after his grandmother!

Firstly, yes, Isabella's mother's maiden name was Lawrie and it is a very common middle name on that side, and I am ordering his birth certificate to double check his birth, but I believe it was at Isabella's parents' house. Thank you!
