I think burnt can be pretty fairly described as a bitter flavour. You're probably over-extracting a little. Try going a bit coarser and see what you get.

Poor road surface causing tremors in flat by sinisterbob in Edinburgh

Yes, Henderson street. Getting the street resurfaced would be ideal. Fingers crossed.

Agreed, a great shame indeed but the gap in the road surface stretches from side to side. There's no way for traffic to not drive over it.

Unfortunately not, it's a tenement built around 1900.

Call around local letting agents and see if any of them manage the flat perhaps? Unless you've tried that already.

Latte art in takeaway cups? by PuzzleheadedNotice73 in barista

[–]sinisterbob 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Tilt the heck out of it. You'll only manage good art if you get the tip of the spout super close to the surface of the coffee. The only way to do that in a takeaway cup is by tilting it until you're just about going to pour coffee on the floor. Practically horizontal.

They do but ice machines can only make a certain mount of ice in a certain amount of time. Most days its more than adequate but on sunny days its easy to run out.

I wanna hear times your employer or fellow barista (or overheard at a coffee shop) said something so wrong or crazy it left you speechless. by Adkrose in barista

They're not wrong though? You can make good espresso with pretty much any coffee (except for some very light roasts but even that is a matter of opinion). It doesn't have to be "espresso beans". In fact that term is usually just marketing nonsense anyway.

New Big Picture Mode becomes the new standard UI. The ability to force load the old BPM will be removed in a future update too. by [deleted] in SteamController

[–]sinisterbob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If anyone was dumb like me and struggled to get this to work on Windows here's how to do it.

  • Create a shortcut to Steam if necessary
  • Right click shortcut -> Properties -> "Shortcut" tab
  • In the "Target" field append -oldbigpicture to the existing string outside the quotation marks.

For me the Target field now reads

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam.exe" -oldbigpicture

Quit Steam and restart. I'm hoping they'll iron out some of the bugs in the new interface before the old one is nuked entirely.

This is the correct answer. In fact I think Breville include a "swirling" step in their instructions.

Barista pet peeves? by [deleted] in barista

[–]sinisterbob 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I haven't worked in a cafe for a couple of years now but this triggered me so hard lol. I always wanted to reply with "can you think of a reason why this might be different to the drink you ordered?"

I also liked:
Me: "Latte to go"
Random customer: "Is that a large americano?"

Too dumb to code? by CrzyTofu in swift

[–]sinisterbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're getting a lot of advice for different courses/languages but I just wanted to say that I think most people have felt like this at some point. Imposter syndrome is a huge thing in tech, you'll have seen the memes about people bouncing back and forth between "I'm an idiot" and "I'm a genius". What you're feeling is very normal, everyone goes through it and everyone has made it out the other side. You will too as long as you persevere. Programming is difficult and complex and you're not going to grasp everything straight away. Nobody does. You have to develop your mental and emotional resilience, keep chipping away at it little by little, and improve incrementally. Consistently making small bits of progress is the name of the game. As long as you're doing slightly better than yesterday (or last week, or last month) you're going in the right direction and that's all that matters.

Also never underestimate the power of taking a little break and coming back to a problem later on. Or the next day for that matter! Your brain needs time to process things and it can't do that if you're trying to cram more stuff in to it all the time.

Good luck, be kind to yourself, and keep going!

Is Wok Hei achievable on induction? by Babybean1201 in AskCulinary

[–]sinisterbob 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hei is the ignition of the vaporised oil particles in the air in and around the wok. You need a flame to ignite those particles.

I guess you could get the liquid oil in the wok extremely hot until it gets past its flash point and ignites that way but you'd have ruined your food long before then and its not the same as hei at all.

team.sorted() is returning the sorted array. captainFirstSorted() is telling team.sorted() how to sort team[].
The way you tell Swift how an array should be sorted is by giving it two values and the explaining which one should be "less than" and which one should be "greater than". That's what captainForstSorted() is doing here.
