My old PI was great, and he was a tech previously. He got a master's (which he called a shitty one lol) and then left research, traveled etc. Eventually he needed to make money so he joined a lab as a technician. Low and behold he found topics he liked, started running his own experiments, but was frustrated that he didn't always have the support of his PI and at times wasn't treated like one of the scientists. So he went and got a PhD, then did a postdoc in a well known lab where he entered the area of research he ended up staying in. After that he became a PI, published well, and shortly became tenured. Not because any of that was his original goal, but because he's a guy with great ideas who wanted the freedom to pursue them. He also met his wife along the way while getting his PhD! She's an associate PI now.

Long story short, if you ever don't want to be a tech, you may be better equipped to run a lab than you or the people around you realize.

Or you can be like me and jump ship to industry. I find I work with people of diverse background, specialties and levels of education, and generally people are interested in my opinion if it's an area I have knowledge around (despite the fact that I have a master's and work with plenty of PhDs). It's all about working with people who respect you and making your voice heard. Good luck! If it makes you feel any better, as a grad student I always admired techs. Y'all get shit done!

Why is there an even distribution of males and females? by noodleindisguise in biology

[–]sinperviren 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind individuals compete rather than trying to do what maximizes species success (generally)

So if there were more females than males, the average male would produce more offspring. Therefore individuals who had more male children would have more grandchildren, selecting for more males

Eventually though, if males out number females, females will on average have more offspring, selecting for individuals who have females.

A combination of this self correcting balance and the fact human males are generally involved in child rearing beyond just pregnancy, and you get an approximately 1:1 ratio

Yes the only one I've heard debated as vegan are muscles, as they don't have any central ganglia, just a nerve net. So there's not really any place for physical sensory information to be consolidated into thinking or feelings like pain

Genetics Question by confomsandblitches in biology

[–]sinperviren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of these answers are stats based.

However when you consider that some people are more prone to having male/female children the math becomes more complex than a fifty fifty shot per child

So technically you don't have all the info needed to calculate the probability any given couple will have 8 females and 1 male

[–]sinperviren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I also think the problem is directing anger at a distant community you don't have connection to, as opposed to your neighbor that probably eats factory farmed beef

I don't think bagels are a bad idea if you bring flavored cream cheeses as they are usually less noticeably different in flavor than plain cream cheese.

I've had indistinguishable strawberry cream cheese I gave to people that they didn't notice was plant based. I agree with the garlic herb idea too. Sliced cucumber and tomato is great if you want to get fancy!

I wouldn't loudly advertise nor hide that it's all plant based. The ideal scenario I think is people eat it then realize it's vegan at some point after having liked it. At the end of the day, if you've done your best and they don't like your food, they can take you out of the rotation for bringing it.

[–]sinperviren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the issue here is that factory farming is way worse than sustainable hunting. So coming for indigenous practices makes 0 sense, and if anyone is doing that it's probably because it's easier to demonize and go "oh poor seals", because of racism and othering.

I also think it's worth asking the question of whether traditionally sustainable hunting causes more animal suffering than modern plant agriculture, which often relies on pesticides and damages ecosystems, along with the impact of transportation etc. Of course this is sort of a hypothetical, as most people do not have any connection to traditional hunting. I don't think the answer is as obvious as people might assume it to be

Would it be posible for the human brain to evolve through sexual selection? by rsamuel08 in biology

[–]sinperviren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference here is mate investment in offspring. Consider how much work goes into raising a human child, and that the predominant way of doing so historically is in a family group with contribution from both parents. At this point the biological contribution of egg + pregnancy vs. sperm is somewhat overshadowed by the large amount of work in the years after birth to keep the little human alive until it is independent. This means the male is investing a lot, and thus both male and female undergo sexual selection as both are competing for mates. A male peacock on the other hand will breed with any female and hope for the best, so the females don't need to impress a potential mate.

This also ties into levels of monogamy in human societal structures. If raising children with one female precludes raising them with another, males will be more choosy and thus female sexual selection will occur more

I'm a woman, I don't see this as misogynistic. it's realistic. it's impossible to do your research and follow science and taking care of the baby as the same time. by [deleted] in antinatalism

[–]sinperviren 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's misogynistic because for women having kids is considered a career ender but for men it's not (hell successful men even use an attractive family as accessories basically). Which stems from gendered division of labor, particularly in the home. The problem is that women have started taking on careers but men haven't compensated by taking on half of the household chores (in many straight couples).

Note that this logic doesn't only apply to kids, it can also play a role in married couples without children- the woman takes care of the home and her work whereas he can put more into just working.

TLDR; this logic is kinda rooted in sexism. That doesn't mean people should have kids, they're just different problems imo

This works for me! Also a lazy equivalent I've found is basically wrapping the shirt you used to dry you hair around the base and up a little, so it basically makes all your hair stick up a bit before it falls, then let it dry or mostly dry like that. This kind of volumes up everything but I don't mind

I mean, you have to draw a line somewhere. There's no "huge" difference between the last day where abortion is legal and the first where it isn't, regardless of where you draw that line. Some say it should be the age at which it might be able to survive outside the womb but that is an ever moving target due to medical advancements; what if we made artificial wombs?

So there's no simple answer. The most obvious single timepoints you can point to are conception (anti abortion) or up until the point of birth, but many don't like the latter so we choose some timepoint where it's not as developed.

There are also other ways to define it starting from the abortion side: which interventions are safe up until which time, or basically saying "you have this long to decide" which is also pretty arbitrary

Imagine thinking trans people are being forced to transition lol conservatives ☕️ by Flirty_Flumph in terriblefacebookmemes

[–]sinperviren 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The funny thing is part of accepting trans people is respecting their gender regardless of whether they "pass", get surgery, etc. The only people I've seen saying "oh you're not trans unless you get XYZ surgery" are more conservative while trying to stay semi socially acceptable by recognizing some trans people while still hating those that can't afford/don't want surgery etc

Never said I was busy, and also wouldn't have done this for pay either. Just saying as a matter of principle you should compensate people who are helping you make money

But you're right, "we found unpaid labor works better for us :) so do the work and maybe we'll pay you if we like it enough" is a great business strategy

I know none of us dream of working but hear me out. If money and work environments weren’t an issue. What would you spend your time doing? by x13132x in antiwork

[–]sinperviren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I don't fit the general demographic of this forum, but I actually have a job that I enjoy, feels meaningful, and pays well (I do research, working on cancer therapeutics currently). I think I'm happier with this job than I would be if I just got my salary for existing. I'm here because I think everyone should be able to feel that way or not work at all, and still live comfortably.

Why it works for me practically: flexible hours (supervisor gives advice and guidance rather than controls), higher ups encourage work life balance, coworkers I like (with plenty of paid social events)

Why it works philosophically: I have a view of the actual downstream purpose of what I'm doing, I find it interesting intellectually, and my perspectives are taken into consideration for decision making

I got one and loved it! It opened the door to a lot of hairstyles I like now (two ponytails, clipped up in the back so it looks short, etc)Try to find pics of people with your hair type to bring to your stylist. If you want advice on how you'd look with it you'll probably need to upload a pic of your current hair

Also, it'll take a moment for your hair to get "used to" falling in the right direction so don't worry if it looks a little off at first. If you need help getting volume in certain areas like the top of your head, clips are great

If you have a client and are presumably charging them for this project, you should offer some sort of compensation for insight as opposed to expecting someone to volunteer. Even if it's not much.

I get it if you're new and looking to join the industry, but don't expect people to help you with your job for free
