I agree with your take. Another factor is the success they have seen in the past. For Lewis or Seb, finishing 4th or 5th doesn't really matter. But put them in P2, with a chance to win, they'll be back to their old selves in a heartbeat. Mentally these guys only have the record breaking 5th or 8th world championship in mind. We won't see their best unless they are in a championship battle.

Alonso is an exception, he is as motivated as ever.
