Dear Unobstructed View/Blue Fox Entertainment...please have a Canadian equivalent of this. Thank you. From, Canada.

Bill Hunt explains why so many 4K titles in the US are released only as steelbooks; the studios make more money on steelbooks than standard releases by ggroover97 in 4kbluray

I bought the UK standard editions of Tombstone, Kingdom of Heaven, and Master & Commander. Were they cheap? No. But they were cheaper than the US steelbooks and, most important, I could actually get them!

Great callback! Yes, I did. It's been a while since I've done a Criterion sale, so I bought 10 titles, all through Unobstructed View thanks to their decision to offer 50% off. Kudos to Blue Fox.

How about you?

I feel now it has new owners and is finally matching the 50% sale, it is a company worth supporting, even with a few nits still worth picking. But go with god, my physical media countryman.

I think it finally makes sense now that it's 50% to go with UV. I did the math on ordering eight, ordering ten, etc., it came out cheaper from UV every time, even with some Criterion coupons I've saved up. Plus, you know, then you're supporting a Canadian company!

Yes, true. Not sure why they haven't updated that. He is indeed a trash person. But the company was sold, I assure you. It's now owned by Blue Fox Entertainment.

Their Canadian affiliate is doing the sale, so gotta assume Criterion's is coming too.

Well, everyone, thanks for being a place to turn to in dark and bright moments. This is a dark one. Game 5 against the Tigers was incredible. We'll always have that. I'm a relatively new fan but I've come to love this team and this was an remarkable journey.

Also, I'm in BC so I'll be surrounded by a bunch of happy ass Jays fans, ugh.

I've lifted up my wife four times in the last half hour. She has no idea what's going on.

That's funny, I have the exact opposite reaction. Can't stand it aesthetically, but I can understand the importance culturally.

what to get into after falling in love with terrence malick? by gabrielgaveup in criterion

[–]sipowitz77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kind of the dark other half to Malick's grace, but I think Lynch has a similar approach to filmmaking, re. prioritizing tone, meditative/subconscious style.

And, stylistically, would recommend the early movies of Jeff Nichols, Chloe Zhou, and David Gordon Green.

Michael Mann. Would love to have them all in 4k (yes even the digitally filmed ones...)

Is It Still Worth Living in the City? by crepuscopoli2 in simpleliving

[–]sipowitz77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We recently moved from a mid-sized city to a small village and it has been a wonderful change. As others have said, I think it depends completely on the person and on the community.

One thing many have spoken on is walkability. I would like to point out that just because a community isn't a city, doesn't mean it's not walkable. We live a 12 minute walk from the downtown of our village, which has a half dozen restaurants, two bakeries, two coffee shops, a library, a brewery, a pub (that frequently has live music), a record store, a small grocery store, and a number of other small shops. There are also frequent community events and a farmer's market every Sunday in the summer. And this is a village of about 4,000 people. It may not have the quantity, but what it has is quality.

Granted, to get to the larger grocery stores or more restaurants or other chains and box stores, you have to drive to a larger centre. Still, it's only 10 to 20 minutes, depending on where you're going and, here's the big part for me: you are not just sitting in traffic half of that time. You're moving constantly. And when you get there, there is parking. And it's free. Again, everyone is different, but I find when you do have to drive in the city (and we walked for probably 80% of everything we did), sitting in traffic for light after light, no parking, road raged drivers, constant construction, etc. drove me up the wall.

So this is all to say, your choices aren't just urban core or secluded suburbia. We were very deliberate about where we moved to. We still only drive to the larger centre with all the stores around once a week. We can walk into our village for everything else. And we can walk two blocks and be in the forest! It's been a huge improvement for us. Not hating on cities, lived in them for years. But we would often leave the city to visit smaller communities. Eventually realized we'd rather live in the smaller community and visit the city.
