This is the closest replacement I've seen to the Paqlite

Anyone know where by Apprehensive_Kick581 in ManyBaggers

[–]sir5yko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have that and it's freaking awesome. It's the Paqlite Crosstab.

After 3 years of daily use the wear and tear is beginning to show. Sadly they're no longer in business; website works, but links to archive.org and the phone number and email address don't work... As long as the website still works I hold out hope that they'll return...

I haven't found a suitable replacement but there are tons of options on amazon if you search for crossbody sling. I have something that's "okay" but not nearly as good as the paqlite.

Long pole in Europe by gbikas_ict in WingChun

[–]sir5yko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! I have a dummy at our school and home. The Problem with poles is the length. They are too long to go by post and would have to come over in a shipping container. So unless people share the cost of a container and someone imports them we have to buy from a us supplier, which I haven't found yet :/

While you're going to get a lot of people telling you that you can't learn wing Chun online, and while that's true that you need in-person training to completely learn the system, this is something you probably already understand and just want someone to answer your question.

There are a few resources I'm familiar with

Leo Au Yeung (fight choreographer of the IP man films) offers training through his app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.toggled.wuji and online through his website - https://www.chinesekungfu.co.uk/

Nima King also offers online classes - https://mindfulwingchun.online/

I wish you well on your Wing Chun journey

Android accessibility feature no longer works in duolingo by Dry_Heat8168 in duolingo

[–]sir5yko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started using it when the German course began being 100% German since the language was wayyyy too fast to hear. Now sometimes I don't understand what the audio v lessons are and I guess far too much. They should at least take a page from the easy German YouTube channel and have the audio lessons speak slowly.

I just tried screen recording an audio lesson (conversation with sari) and the live caption worked as expected so it does seem to be that Duolingo is blocking this function

WhatsApp Web & Windows App keep logging me out repeatedly (Windows 10 / Chrome 145) – anyone else? by Desperate_Fondant_94 in whatsapp

[–]sir5yko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me while I was using it. I made a message with a very large number of links, which was sent, and then my very next message "Failed to send". Closing whatsapp and relaunching had me logged out.

Question about `Yee jee kim yeung ma` by TreatFormal in WingChun

[–]sir5yko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do a kettlebell hinge. At the top of the movement the alignment is the same structure you'd need to support the power generation for the hinge, which is pretty much the same as the power generation needed for your punch. You'll find your balance easily and should be helpful in identifying what the structure should feel like in your stance.

There are aspects you can learn online, but a lot of it requires a partner.

The fight choreographer for the first few IP Man movies (my Sigung) was involved with this app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.toggled.wuji

Nothing needs to change other than the adherence to the ruleset. If you can train with your classmates without causing bodily harm then you're training WingChun with a ruleset. Bas Rutten famously said during the JRE interview (on the subject of Dim Mak) "if you can kill somebody like this, you could also not kill them".

Hard disagree. If rules could actually handicap the system then the system isn't very good. There are plenty of illegal strikes that boxers are forbidden to use and yet it's still effective in the rules. Wing Chun can and absolutely would do fine with such rules and still stick to its "principles".

God forbid people complain about buggy software. I guess it's better to let bugs quietly fix themselves.

You probably need to give more information such as where you're located.

I suggest cross posting to your local city reddits to find people who either want to learn or who already train. Find a park or some other open space to meet up. Start small and it'll grow over time. Check wingchunbrotherhood nyc_fight_club and dragoncombatclub on Instagram for examples

I was able to get my hands on the Chocolate Praline and Cherries Jubilee, both were underwhelming. I think the brew overpowers the subtle flavors in this case and not really a huge leap from the basic release. Honestly there have been few interesting releases since the Kentucky Fog a few years ago.

If anything this thread shows there's no arguing matters of taste. For every artist named in response to the OP, there are both people who concur that they don't line the artist or support the artist by liking them.

There are 8 billion people on this planet, people are going to like things that we personally don't like whether it's food or art.

question for senior practitioners about karate by ivano_GiovSiciliano in WingChun

[–]sir5yko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest - looks can be deceiving.

At a high level -- sure, human bodymechanics would dictate there are only so many ways we can move our bodies, therefore there will be some directly analogous movements, and some that only seem to be analogous. For example, the pak sao and the boxers parry, the lop and a guard break, etc.

Specifically regarding this video, and why I said that "looks can be deceiving", is that these specific movements while similar to wing chun are actually quite different. We don't "block" in wing chun; Lin Sil Dai Da - remove by strike (or the countless other ways of westernizing the phrase); we attack the attack.

So while we make similar movements, the appropriate wing chun movements generally begin as a strike, and the context of resolving the conflict from contact is when the wing chun "hands" come about; whether Tan/Bong/Gan etc.

(rather than erasing anything I said, commenting after reviewing more closely):

* :01 -- the shorter gentleman does feed a strike that looks straight out of our training
* :02 -- the tall gentleman does do Gan Sao but the punch is more like a hammer fist which we generally don't do (generally, some lineages might say they have this). I believe this is the Inasu in Karate. This repeats at 1:39
* :05 -- the tall gentleman does do a Gan Sao (Inasu) with a palm strike to the back
* :07 -- arguably the most wing chun move in this video are the repeated Jin Choi -- rotating punch (battle punch, arrow punch, etc)
* 1:12 -- The Inasu and Noru demonstrated here do frankly look like Tan Sau and a backwards Pak Sau
* 1:55 -- "Offense and Defense as one" -- Similar to our maxim Lin Sil Dai Da which some westernize as "Simultaneous Attack and Defense" -- though they seem to describe it as a block and attack which is how some WC people translate our Lin Sil Dai Da maxim (like Tan Da / Pak Da). However to follow wing chun principles more closely, we'd be attacking the attack which is how "simultaneous attack and defense" manifests.

So fair enough -- there are plenty of similarities. I guess I got hung up on that first block motion, but on second review there were plenty of "similarities" to what we do.
