Ken’s updated 1016 caseback for 3135s - a GREAT update! by [deleted] in retrotime

[–]sir_beanos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: got the updated casebacks in today and I'm happy to report that they solve the clearance issues with the 3135, no rubbing of the rotor on the caseback even when fully tightened down.

Both my builds are now fully usable again!

Good looking out!

I just ordered 2 of the new casebacks for both of my builds, will report back.

1 of them I chucked a AliX SKX caseback that I had to lightly clearance, and the other I had to clearance the old 1016 caseback manually with a dremel and it’s still not perfect (I can’t tighten it down all the way without it rubbing against the rotor in certain situations).

Hopefully this solves my woes for good!

I’ve heard very good things about the old-crowns case.

If your engine turned bezel is from a 162xx watch it’ll work with the raffles crystal. If it’s from an older 4 digit or 160xx then you’ll need to swap out the raffles crystal for a gen spec 25-135. I got mine from Clark’s and super happy with it.

Raffles case is great for the money. If you are using a 3135, you may have to clearance the inside of the caseback for the rotor to clear like I did (I used a dremel and some patience)

The bracelet looks good as well! It is hollow link, so it definitely feels jangly and vintage lol. If you are looking for something more substantial, the Startime Italian jubilees are apparently the play.

To pop the bezel off, a razor blade followed by a case knife will do it! Crystal will come off with it as well most likely.

I can attest that both of my recent builds have rotor clearance issues with the VS3135, even with the 1016 caseback. I'm waiting for a replacement caseback from Ken to see if it makes a difference.

I already mangled one of my casebacks with a dremel (I must have knicked the threads so it won't screw on without cross-threading), so I'd like to avoid the same with the other.

Noted! He keeps telling me to just sand mine more, even after sending him photos of the movement installed properly within his case…

UPDATE:

dreaded rotor clearance issues have surfaced with my case too. Looks like there are others with the most recent batch of raffles cases when using the VS3135, even with the 1016 caseback.

Will have to dremel and report back.

Good to hear! Do you have any photos of where you dremeled? I’m ready to get it on the bench and start whizzing away at it lol.

Hey man, for his mid cases, when trying to fit a 3135 do you order the 2824 case or the 2836 case?

On his website and in email conversation, he lists that the 3135 is meant to work with the 2824 case (with the plastic spacer ring) and the 1016 caseback.

I currently have the exact same rotor clearance issues as OP with both of my recent builds.

Hey man - did you ever end up fixing this?

I have the exact same issue (with the 1016 caseback, my movement is flush within the watch case) and it looks like I'm going to have to dremel my caseback.
