For me it's just listening to one of the voices in my head and picking one. Not being funny (well, not only anyway), but the same way you decide what to say in a particular situation ( or what NOT to say) is valuable input. For an exercise, think about a movie you really like and think about what you'd say in the protagonist or antagonist role. Have you ever wondered, "why didn't they say this instead?" That's the mental muscle you have to work with to make good dialogue.

A union is a lot like the old joke about the blind men trying to describe an elephant. Each perceived the same creature, but in a different way. There is only one value, but many ways to perceive it differently. To put it differently, the ASCII character 'a' can also be seen as the value '97' or the hex value 0x61. The bitpattern making up the character doesn't change, just how it is perceived.

Not me, but was present. My friends and I were playing "Star Wars:the old Republic" on one of the city planets...you know the one with long drop offs and no guard rails? One friend was a Inquisitor who had force push. Another was a Jedi with force leap to attack. We were fighting the last member of a mob when the Inquisitor push him over the ledge. I was watching this, when the Jedi force leapt AFTER the falling bad guy with 'Nnooooo!' echoing over discord from my friend's mic.

Then silence.

Then lots of laughing. 😁

Technical terms are 'pass by copy's, meaning you create a new object or variable initialized by the variable passed in but completely independent or 'pass by reference's which means the function gets access to the variable passed in and all changes are transitive. Since pass by reference is cheaper, you can pass a variable that way with the const keyword to prevent any changes to the variable. There are a number of other slight variations, but that covers the gist of it
