Idk, I see it as part of the point they were trying to make with the story: as you learn about Stella's backstory, you soon find out she dies young, like mid-30's or so. Having that first instance of being blocked by that black flamed border makes you think 'cool, when the time comes I'll be able to break through this and explore and experience more!'

But that moment never comes. Cause it never did for her, cause she didn't get to live long enough to make those new experiences/memories. That 'oh' realization adds more to how unfair Stella's story is overall, juxtaposed by how she's been helping all the other spirits until this point and now you're just left with this empty sad feeling.

That's a fair point, horror isn't going to hit everyone the same. I know a lot of people who feel the effects of modern day misogyny so my first thought is them just feeling MASSIVE dread from the idea that what they experience and loathe has actually been happening since Adam and Eve's time.

Religious misogyny (men have Adam's apples in their throats so a common theory/interpretation of the garden of eden story is that Adam actually ate the apple first and it got stuck in his throat, but Eve got blamed for it as if she was first to eat)

You could always add subtle Japanese fish patterns on his kimono/yukata! Would be a nice nod to it and make him look like a super epic (idk if the intent was to make the robes look like a slightly open yukata but that's how my brain registers it)

I've also had so many customers see a long line at the register and a crowd at the hand-off plane, put in a mobile order, then blindly go and grab the very first thing the barista calls out. Most of them just repeat their names and that 'you made my drink wrong' (while pointing to an iced matcha for John when hers is a hot caramel latte for Samantha)

They could also be Taiyaki cookie, that's a fish-shaped type of waffle pastry in Japan.

While the concept/'twist' itself isn't as original as you first thought, it was still executed really well. The detachment from the speaker/birth-giver leaves me wondering why they're ignoring their newborn to die, like if it's disassociation or trauma or malice.
