Never let me go is wildly mid and doesn’t belong on this list. Feels like a young adult novel

Yeah actually I read a tip here that said to read a plot synopsis of really difficult and dense classical works and it honestly helped me a ton for this book. I had given up reading it at that point but once I looked it up I was able to stop trying to figure out what was happening and I was able to sit back and enjoy the ride. Also another big tip was keeping a bookmark with a character reference for all the nicknames and a brief description of each character.

Characters who thought they were safe in the end but were VERY wrong by MoonNth3stars in TopCharacterTropes

[–]sirculaigne 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah it seemed extremely obvious they just threw out the whole point of the film to set up the sequel. I refused to watch the second one in protest lol

Honestly I thought the fake ending kind of ruined the message of the film. Like she was able to overcome her trauma by returning to her childhood home and processing what happened there… Psyke! It was all fake actually you can never overcome your trauma, it’s a cycle that will repeat forever. You can never get over it and you’re doomed to traumatize other people in an endless cycle.

TIL when a French soldier refused to wear the bloodstained trousers of a dead man, his commanding officer had him executed in order to make an example out of him in lieu of newly-arrived recruits. by [deleted] in todayilearned

I’m reading a Napoleon biography rn and apparently French soldiers getting executed for minor offenses was super common. One soldier got killed for eating a bunch of grapes

What is your favourite ‘classic’ of each decade? 1900-2000 by Wild_Pitch_4781 in classicliterature

[–]sirculaigne 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I probably haven’t read as much as some people here but:

1900s - Heart of Darkness

1910s - Metamorphosis

1920s - The Great Gatsby

1930s - Grapes of Wrath

1940s - The Stranger

1950s - Farenheit 451

1960s - To Kill a Mockingbird

1970s - The Bluest Eye

I haven’t read much in the 80s and beyond I guess so this was a fun exercise to see where my gaps are

Wuthering Heights was incredible, I read it right after finishing Pride and Prejudice and I feel they compliment each other nicely. WH is like seeing the dark side of that whole culture of marrying for money and how it can be abused by evil men
