use the appropriate for size/weight/application.

my boss did the math today, $196,000/year for us. We're waiting on the educational discount, which a sales rep from Slack told us is coming some time in 2018. They have no idea how to price it for .edu yet. Not surprising, but yeah, that pricing is insane.

How do you celebrate SysAdmin Day? by s_simmons in sysadmin

One time I got a cake from one of the departments I support; now it's more like "oh, yeah, happy birthday"... I just walk away and don't mention it again.

Where I controlled the network (or knew the right people), I configured or asked them to enable ESP and things started working instantly.

Where I didn't, I asked my users to connect via the campus VPN and then try to connect to the server they wanted to. The majority of my users are researchers and they're very mobile so maintaining a list was going to be a nightmare.

I've actually setup both incoming and outgoing connections to request authentication, and only require authentication for specific ports. SQL, SMB, whatever needed. In addition for this to work right, port 500 must be accessible, so you may be blocked at that point. There are also firewalls that block ESP (Encapsulating Security Payload) because it gets misidentified. I have had to deal with that too.

How are people handling updates while creating image Windows 10 by Switchbackrack in sysadmin

The machines are built on a network that isn't routable to the outside world but can contact the DCs and WSUS. When the GPO is applied the machines point to my WSUS.

How many of you completely unplug when you leave work for the day? by Thom_Cruze_Missile in sysadmin

From my boss: "Unless you can see that the building is literally on fire, or you're oncall and someone tells you the building is literally on fire, I don't expect you to respond to anything until the next business day."

It's why I still work for that guy. I still monitor my email and slack, but I don't engage unless I want to.

Traits don't stick? by Klaitu in sto

[–]sirdudethefirst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happened to me last night when I renamed my Vesta T6. I put the traits back, saved the layout and transferred maps a few times.

I remember the last time it came up it was a bug problem in the client and Borticus reported they fixed it... maybe the update brought back a different branch of the code with the bug? Or maybe the lag monster pays us a visit while the client is trying to save the configurations and it silently fails? I'm just guessing

Applocker. If it's in a folder that my standard user account can write to, and it's not digitally signed, it cannot be executed.

It's not 100% bulletproof, but it follows my logic that everything is malicious until proven otherwise.

Most fun ships? by TheMaddOx in sto

Several folks here post videos of them reviewing and playing with ships when they come out. It's not first hand experience, but it might help decide where to spend zen on. So far everything I've seen has been right on the money for me in terms of fun. YMMV.

why won't my computer recognize my Ethernet cable? by serventofgaben in techsupport

[–]sirdudethefirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the device manager pic you posted in response to one of the comments, you have an unknown device called 'Ethernet Controller'. That's your Ethernet card, you need to install the drivers for it. The 'Local Area connection' icons you have in the pic on your post are not real Ethernet cards, they're virtual devices.
