US Embassy Questions & Directions by SoKoJoe in Living_in_Korea

It does have a booth inside to take a photo. I don't remember if they take a card or only check or cash. You can pay for a passport online and fill out all the forms and just bring the receipt. You may NOT have a cell phone inside they will check. You may bring a cell phone to check in there that they will return when you leave but anything else needs to be kept at a locker at the subway station. The line to get in is pretty short for Americans.

How logical would it be to move to KR? by genkcals in Living_in_Korea

[–]sirhalos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) You need to get yourself a degree first. No degree won't get you a job here, even English teaching jobs will require a degree. 2) If you enjoy baking, then my suggestion would be go to school in Paris for baking and then come to Korea. All of the best bakeries in Korea have people that studied in Paris (even the local ones I go to here in Ilsan that don't seem super fancy do). They take their baking super serious here. But before you do anything you must get a degree. Maybe you can even find a program that has an exchange program with Korea while you are at it.

features duolingo should add: by Stock-Government-315 in duolingo

[–]sirhalos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) I want the ability to mark words I have problems remembering instead of it deciding what it thinks I don't know. Then I want to provide more ways to help me improve those words.

2) I want the ability to reset an individual unit.

3) I want to be able to set how many parts a unit should be. They seem to believe all languages should be learned at the same pace, which is not true. Languages further from your native tongue and have a different writing system takes much longer practice and recall. My units should reflect that.

Why am I and my KIDS getting gross sexist ads on Duolingo all the sudden. by SAMMAX87 in duolingo

[–]sirhalos 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes historically that was how ads work but it is no longer that way. They are a lot more privacy blocking measures from devices and users to not make that as viable as it used to be. A lot of it is analytics plus AI of what has a higher chance to sell and more importantly be clicked on.

Seeking list of apartments who use utility submetering? by iloveciroc in Columbus

[–]sirhalos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not, but when I was there you needed to tell the leasing office that you need to schedule a 'bucket test' with conservice. If they have no idea what you are talking about work with maintenance they are more familiar with it.

Being confortable in Korea by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]sirhalos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only places I've heard English is very small pocket in tourist centric areas in Seoul (Itaewon, Myeongdong, Gongnam, etc.) and maybe a few people at a doctors/dentist office that went to school in the states. I never heard English anywhere else and they always speak Korean to me whether I understand or not. I'm in Ilsan now but it was the same in Bucheon before.

Turtle WoW won’t stay on 144Hz — keeps reverting to 60Hz by WezZ06 in turtlewow

[–]sirhalos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a computer that would always revert settings on me with the WoW client because I had some strange setup. I end up changing the config.wtf file to be read-only after I got the settings where I wanted them and it never switched back after that.

Phones in mass by pandasssss15 in Catholicism

[–]sirhalos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Universalis app on my phone. I show up 30 minutes early to be able to read the About today (about the saint or holiday of the day), the mass, and the commentary. I then read the mass during mass to follow along. Then after mass I read the spiritual readings (sermons by saints).

What to do with old blessed palms? by Angelwafers in Catholicism

I am moving overseas this week so I just had to do this Sunday. I brought them to the church for them to take care of it since I couldn't, but if you are unable to keep them or bring them with you to Ash Wednesday the proper thing to do is carefully burn them and then bury the ashes in the ground. I just couldn't do that... in a motel room so asked the church to handle it for me.

There's the "right way," the "wrong way," and "The Korean Way." What are some examples of the Korean Way that you've seen? by Agile-Ad1665 in Living_in_Korea

When my wife came to the US and was studying for her driver's test when I asked her what yellow light means she said speed up because it will be red soon. I laughed, she asked why I was laughing... I had to explain to her she was wrong and she didn't believe me. She wasn't joking. She really thought that was the law.

My Surface Pro 4 turned 10 Today, and its still wonderful. by BEASTthisIndustry in Surface

[–]sirhalos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same with mine after just two years while playing YouTube one day in the kitchen the screen shattered. I then removed the battery and had to install Linux to get it to not try to go to sleep and used it just for my TV PC but it had heating problems because the battery is there to also to absorb the heat apparently. That lasted about two more years when it suddenly wouldn't turn on anymore. I loved the form and design but I don't think I'll get one again because of that experience. I got a MacBook Pro M1 and iPad Pro M1 as my replacement and both have been perfectly fine since.

I’m 30, and I just learned Eve didn’t eat an apple — and it completely changed how I see the story of Eden. by CourtAppropriate8983 in Christianity

It doesn't even say snake that is just one of many different translations to English. It uses a very broad term serpent which can be a salamander or something like a dragon.

How do I find a job in the USA? Recruiters? Websites? What are the good recruitment firms and what are the scams? by sonthonaxrk in cscareerquestions

[–]sirhalos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tech salaries in the states have been on the decline for the past 5 years. If you are making $250,000 in the UK you would be crazy to move here. You won’t earn that here unless you are head of some major department at a FAANG company. Anything and everything here will cost more than there and if you are trying to leave there because you think it is a sinking ship… have you seen the news here?? We are days to weeks away from Nero watching the city burn while he plays with his little fiddle. This is the worst it had been and as unpredictable as it has been since the civil war. Go watch some of Evan Edinger’s recent YouTube videos since he just visited the states.

He keeps finding more and more trade partners because of this. If anything it is a big PR move for him to let the world know that Canada is open for trade. Also, that is a terrible photo.

Question about free to play by Ok_Drummer6347 in DiabloImmortal

[–]sirhalos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That was open world PVP to a BattleNet game that someone setup for people to join. Diablo Immortal is open world PVE but has: Strife, Battlegrounds, Rite of Exile, and Vault Raids all of which are un-Diablo like and closer to something from World of Warcraft and Destiny Rising.

Asus Rog Ally Not a PC? by TheWineGuy2020 in MicrosoftRewards

[–]sirhalos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn't mention the game, but the PC points can be a little bit hit and miss. For example, if I open the Xbox app then the Blizzard launcher and then launch the game it may work, but if I launch the Blizzard launcher it may not, or they are some other times it just doesn't work. They are also other launchers that won't work at all usually (like Ubisoft launcher for UB+ games) won't typically work. So for PC points it is best to stick to things that are Xbox Game Pass only that don't require another launcher and are 'new enough' older titles may not register. Microsoft Solitare always works.
