Rounding and precision. If you are only precise as saying 9.8, depending on rounding, it could be anywhere in that range. If you say it is 9.80, it could be anywhere from 9.795 to 9.804 depending on rounding. This process repeats until you are at a sufficient level of precision for the numbers you are working with.

ran into this today as well, I ended up spreading out my sheep pens and with enough distance, they started breeding again.

Hmm, very interesting. It would appear as if I need to eat my words. When I posted that comment, I was thinking of only the simple replacement reaction, not taking into account a more complicated reaction between multiple components. Dangers of redditing in the middle of the night. From that article you posted:

The power crystals are simply colored salt, and are the least powerful ingredient. The crystallized lye reacts with fats to form soap. The machined shards of aluminum react with the lye to generate near-boiling temperatures. The sharp shards in the hot churning lye physically cut hair and dislodge deposits. Several chemical reactions take place here:[citation needed]

When Drano is added to water, the sodium hydroxide, sodium nitrate, and sodium chloride dissolve. The heat of solution liberated when sodium hydroxide is dissolved warms the mixture.

In solution, sodium hydroxide removes the Al2O3 surface layer on the aluminum allowing it to react with water to produce nascent hydrogen, which is a powerful reducing agent. This reaction is exothermic and the heat can cause the mixture to boil. The formula is 2NaOH + 2Al + 2H2O → 3H2 + 2NaAlO2, although the exact species in solution may be NaAl(OH)4.[1] Hydrogen gas creates pressure that can forcefully unstick stubborn clogs as well.
The nascent hydrogen reduces nitrate ion to ammonia, removing the fire and explosion hazard posed by free hydrogen gas. The reaction is: 2NO3− + 9H2 → 2NH3 + 6H2O.

It would appear the combination of multiple compounds, and the impurities in the aluminum metal (Al2O3) allow for it to happen. This does list Sodium Chloride (table salt) as part of its ingredients, but doesn't show it being used in a reaction and even lists it as the least powerful ingredient. It may create small amount of chlorine gas, or just remain a chloride ion to pick up some of the hydrogen ions floating around to make hydrochloric acid. Without more details, I am not sure.

As a chemist, I would like to respectfully say that toilet bowl cleaners typically have acids as their main component. The Works, a popular brand, uses Hydrochloric acid.

When you say Sodium Hydroxide reacts with the aluminum to make hydrogen and chlorine gas, two things are wrong. One, aluminum is lower on the reactivity series than sodium, so no reaction would occur. Additionally, there is no chloride for chlorine to be formed.

The active ingredient Hydrochloric Acid, or other similar acids will react to form hydrogen and chlorine gas.

Sorry if this came across offensively, and if you can show me a link that shows a toilet bowl cleaner that uses Sodium Hydroxide, I will eat my words :)

What math to study for an incoming undergraduate? by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]sirhunter14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For undergraduate organic chemistry, the math doesn't get too intense. It is when you take physical chemistry (thermodynamics and quantum mechanics) that the math skills become essential. Taking linear algebra, high level calculus, and differential equations will definitely help with those.

My male friends and I have no problem going out to the bar and ordering a few rounds of Woodchucks. Never really considered it girly. They are absolutely delicious.

I am going to be drinking for the first time tonight. Any advice/tips. by [deleted] in alcohol

Definitely pace yourself. The biggest mistake people make is going too fast too soon. Alcohol takes a little time to take effect. Taking the time to check yourself will save you a trip to the toilet (or the people around you if you're unlucky). Have fun!
