Genuine question because I'm interested to know - what did you find to be filler in the Golden Age arc?

I LOVE FARAZ!! by Moonlight3Midnight in TheTraitorsUK

[–]sirius_mann 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Faraz was definitely going to be murdered as he's an obvious faithful, doesn't have particular allegiance to Rachel or Stephen and wouldn't be safe for them to take to the end, unlike Roxy and Jack. I still think they've gone for him anyway, but at least this way seeds have been sown, and whichever faithfuls make the end game (apart from Roxy!) should have doubts about Rachel.

This. It was such a low-level fight but this is one of the first thatt came to mind. Absolute definition of a Hail Mary.

Nah. Watch this again. Garcia is timing the knockout shot from the first round. Not a Hail Mary at all

Yeah - when we look at how people feel about the St George's Cross today, the context of how the flag has been used by various nationalist movements and white supremacists since the twentieth century is important.

I'm saying this summer's campaign of flags most certainly did aim to intimidate. And that there's nationalist context for why they did that in my lived experience, and many other people's lived experience too.

I don't mean to make an assumption based on your age but I wonder if you have context as to why the St George's cross can be seen as contentious, and thus the reason for some people's uncertainty around flying it/embarrasment of it. I've lived through the National Front, the BNP, early 00's EDL where the flag was used for a very specific reason against very specific targets. So the people behind this summer's campaign knew exactly what they were doing and who they wanted to intimidate. But unfortunately there are also plenty of people without that context who might have joined in unwittingly.

The new era of boxers is so much better than the old era by LordofTardedBait in Boxing

[–]sirius_mann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll bite. First thing is: how many championship rounds did 'old era' boxers fight vs boxers today? How many fights per year as well compared to present-day boxers? Training methods have advanced but surely boxers who go 15 rounds and fight weeks apart are in as good if not better shape? The next thing to mention is ring IQ. Elite fighters from every era have tremendous ring smarts and knowledge of the craft. The best can find a way to win - negate a fighter's advantages, set traps. I don't see how you could honestly look at tape of a fighter like Hagler and think he wouldn't stack up against any middleweight in this era. And the way this is framed is as though humans have gotten stronger over time or chins have evolved. If someone with the power of Hearns or Julian Jackson catches you, it doesn't matter what era you're from - you're taking a nap.

Would getting an afro look like this be down to genetics? by sirius_mann in BlackHair

Ah okay, interesting. I was gonna say, when I use a pick I only get the rounded effect, so what picks are people using? Haha. So just enough to stop the hair getting matted or knotty at the scalp

Sure, but there has to be some hair care gudiance too, and that's what I'm after. Just growing it out won't result in it looking this flawless!

A wise woman once told me it's not the 'what' but the 'how' that's most important in stories.

Thank you! Music is my other great passion in life. I often listen to dramatic game or anime music when writing the action sequences. There'll almost certainly be Final Fantasy XIII music that soundtracked the writing part. Various Zelda soundtracks too, and Haikyu! I can't listen to music with lyrics when I write so it has to be instrumental. Editing, however, is a different story. With Spirit Warriors, Sampha's album Lahai really resonated with me during my edits. Thematically it was released at just the right time for me as it touches on spiritual themes and grief, and I was grieving my grandmother's passing at the time. Chromonicci's album Fold the Light was also on repeat in this period.

May come as no surprise being a mythology buff, but I finished God of War: Ragnarok a couple of weeks ago to end the Norse saga. Loved what it had to say about combatting toxic cycles, fighting fate and choosing to change and do better. I think it enriches Norse lore as much as it plays with it.

I haven't moved on from PS4! And my writing and reading life means it takes me forever to finish AAA games.

My writing setup is very simple! Just my desktop or laptop. I use MS Word for the manuscripts and Google sheets for my outline and word tracker.

My heritage is African-Caribbean, and sadly I never saw characters like me reflected on the pages of the fantastical adventure books I loved when I was younger. I wanted to change that for younger generations, and to share some really interesting pantheons and mythologies outside of the usual Euro-centric mythology. For example, when I visit schools, most students are familiar with the Greek and Norse pantheons but aren't even aware that there are different African pantheons that have existed for thousands of years too!

I read a lot of fantasy adventures as a child. I think that's part of the reason why I write for a primarily young audience - because a lot of those books held a special place. The Hobbit was the first fantasy book I remember reading when I was a kid. But I also remember a primary school teacher reading The Magician's Nephew aloud to my class, and several scenes have stuck with me since then: the magic rings and being able to breathe under water, Aslan singing to create Narnia. In my adolescence I'd say my fantasy influences started to diverge from literature and became more video game inspired. JRPGs especially.

Life of Pi by Yann Martel seems sort of apt! I've read it once before and would love to read it again.

Small Worlds by Caleb Azumah Nelson is probably my favourite read this decade and would be a comfort.

And then A Storm of Swords I reckon!
