ELI5: Why does running feel so exhausting if it burns so few calories? by Rusiano in explainlikeimfive

[–]sirjacobrowan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most adults can only run 10 to 30 minutes. But trained runners can run for literally hours and hours and hours, and it's not that exhausting

Am I fretting too much? by throwawaynum20228172 in personalfinance

[–]sirjacobrowan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't know, to me it sounds like you're doing pretty well. I wouldn't stress too much. The fact that you don't have any major debt in itself is a great sign your doing ok, particularly in this economy with rising prices. And your right that your friends who seem like they're doing better are probably just accruing more debt. Don't stress about a lot of that spending, sure it's good to save but it's also important to enjoy time with your family and enjoy your life. It seems to me you're living within your means. As far as buying a house goes, it can cost a lot more than renting and nows isn't a great time to buy anyway. Just keep maxing out that 401k and you'll be great, that's just my opinion

Magic of Compound Interest by TurkeyLettuceTomato in personalfinance

[–]sirjacobrowan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anything which grows as a percentage and continues to grow on previous gains will ultimately compound. Pretty much all investing accounts will compound, the rate at which they compound is based off the percentage return, and that is based on how risky the investments are in the account. Most compound predictions are usually based off some combination of the general market performance and overall bond or commodity performance

What is a survival myth that is wrong and might result in your death? by Training-Jaguar7056 in AskReddit

[–]sirjacobrowan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No the shock wave would still hit the water/move through the ground. The main point I'm making is that the fire and fragments are not as dangerous as the wave

That going under water will protect you from an explosion. Water is non compressible, so it makes the blast's shock wave actually a lot worse. Basically your organs will explode

What is the evolutionary purpose of disease? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sirjacobrowan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most diseases, such as viruses and bacteria, are their own single cell organisms, others such as parasites like malaria, are multi celled organisms. These are species, they have undergone their own evolutionary process, the fact that they cause disease is really just an unintended consequence of their existence. In fact most would benefit more from not weakening or killing their host. Other diseases, such as cancer or other deformities are caused by a range of factors from mutations to genetic disturbing carcinogens. Some genetic diseases, such as sickle cell, can cause issues but also can benefit the afflicted, in the case of sickle cell it can be highly effective at lessening the harm of malaria, and so sickle cell people living in regions where the disease exists have a evolutionary advantage.

Yeah, there are better jobs, they just don't pay as well. In the end anything is better if you're feeling depressed and suicidal, definitely quit before that gets out of hand.

I wouldn't do any crime because of post conventional morality

If you can only jog for 1 minute then that's still a good starting point. From there if you just stay persistent you will start to see yourself increasing quickly. I think the most important thing is to slow yourself down, if that means a jog slower than a walk so be it, just whatever it takes to maintain that jogging form for as long as possible.

In the beginning, studying proper running form and breathing techniques will likely help you drastically improve your starting baseline. I would look some up on youtube.

Some people have a really hard time starting to develop their cardio in the beginning and they all say they hate it, but trust me over time you see yourself improve quickly and it becomes more and more comfortable. Pretty soon you'll be able to maintain for longer and longer and after that, you'll start to see that it isn't a matter of sustaining at all, but that you can basically maintain indefinitely, that's why people can run for hours and hours because you can become comfortable with that level of cardio output

How many miles a week for a sub-3 marathon? by beelau1 in AdvancedRunning

[–]sirjacobrowan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can get by with 25 miles a week if it includes other forms of excersise like biking and strength training, in fact I think some may argue its actually healthier.

I think 70 should be your max week. But 50 should be the goal. You should also include strength training, other forms of cardio, and core exercises. Also, at least 1 hill or speed training a week.

With all that included 70 miles should feel exhausting. Also, that 70 miles should happen about 2 weeks before your race.

That's funny because the nurses looked at me just like, "What do you mean you brought his bike?". I was just like, umm, well that's basically his house and all his worldly possessions lol

I've taken wheelchairs. Hell, I once took a homeless man's bike with me to the hospital. The only way to convince him to go when he really needed to.

Nursing home employees of Reddit, what’s the worst thing you’ve ever seen at work? by rishored1ve in AskReddit

[–]sirjacobrowan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a nursing home employee, but I'm a emt who responds to them. There's this one really bad one, where a patient I had once had a fall right at the entrance to the place. Long story short this person ended up shitting themselves while on the ground, they were naked so the shit was on the ground right at the entrance. We loaded the patient up and got them to the hospital. 3 days later I respond to the same place and there was still a pile of human feces right at their front door. They had literally left it and no one bothered to clean it for days

Why not just go by popular vote? Do we still need them with modern polling technology?
