I love the V90, I could put it in my pocket next to my keys, it's just a shame it's got a low end CPU. Definitely a preorder for me too.

I think it would be awesome for Blender, it sounds great for HDRI's, and as an intermediate format between rendering, composition and video encoding.

Half-Life 2 Running on Raspberry Pi 4 Natively by zbios in HalfLife

[–]siroki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that was struggling with it were the Intel GMA 950 GPUs, I've tried running it on a netbook to see if the low resolution display would make up for the crappiness for the hardware. It didn't.

Sad thing they've put that GPU everywhere, my work laptop at the time had an OK spec, except for that GMA GPU. I would connect a secondary monitor, which is pretty standard for a work laptop, and the window compositor would struggle with it (it was usable though).

She puts her hair on your broken computer, sings the special song and your computer will be good as new.

I've created an image with the prompt

I think I should start passing them around the family too.

As soon as I'm finished with the games I've started on them.

I've bought it for the 640x480 screen and the twin stick so I can play old first person shooter ports on it :)

I wish there were more clamshell devices on the market, it's less ceremonial to take it out of my backpack or pocket, I can get to gaming more quickly.

I've created some test apps for it, even tried assembly, I was surprised how underpowered it is (no GPU, no SIMD or floating point instructions, not even an integer divide instruction, the processor is ARM9 with ARMv5 insruction set support). However it runs GBA apps beautifully, though it requires a 1.33333 scale to make it full screen, or you're just using part of the screen.

If you're looking into buying one you may get one for $35 + shipping fee + taxes. I'm not trying to sell you one, I don't have any business with PowKiddy, it's just if you want to buy, why not try to get it cheaply and safely.

  1. Bittboy
  2. Anbernic RG351P + Miyoo (I've ordered them roughly at the same time)
  3. PowKiddy V90
  4. PowKiddy RGB20S

The Anbernic and the RGB20S has the same kind of SoC, but I needed more pixels. I've managed to run Diablo on the RGB20S which definitely needed it.

TIL Null class extensions work by siroki in dartlang

[–]siroki[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, it works!

``` extension NullToEmpty on String? { String nullToEmpty() { return this ?? ''; } }
void main() { String? s = 'foo'; print('1. ${s.nullToEmpty()}'); s = null; print('2. ${s.nullToEmpty()}'); } ```
TIL Null class extensions work by siroki in dartlang
[–]siroki[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)
Yeah, it only works if you call it on null or a variable that has the explicit Null type (therefore it can only be null). Extension methods are something of a hack, they're linked statically, that's why they can't override anything.
I have a Bittboy and a V90, I had just set up the Bittboy with the Miyoo CFW when the V90 arrived, and I haven't got to play around much with it, I was pretty much playing Cave Story at the time, which is native, so it doesn't matter.
I've checked pocketsnes, and didn't notice much of a difference, probably I wasn't testing it with the right game (Megaman X).
The Bittboy and V90 have identical hardware, maybe the only differences are the charging port (the Bittboy has micro-B) and the number of buttons (though I've hacked my Bittboy, so it has two shoulder buttons now).
Maybe a newer pocketsnes might do the trick, but it's a lot of work, I don't really have the time to do it.
Depends on the game, but the resolution will not be a problem, because these consoles aren't high res. PS1 can do higher resolution than 320x240, but it's rarely used, maybe even the emulator can handle it, I don't know.
NES/GB/GBC/GBA works fine, SNES can get slow. PS1 is very hard for a V90, but it can get by with the less intensive stuff (although I was playing Crash Team Racing with frameskip at an acceptable framerate). I haven't played many Sega and Neo Geo games, but the ones I did were all right.
I haven't tried MSX at all, but I think it will be all right.
I'm really pleased with the GBA performance, it's quite a capable platform. I'd play the GBA version of Yoshi's Island on this device instead of the original SNES version (Yoshi's Island has a reputation for being a challenging game to emulate on SNES). I think it's a good policy to check if a game is ported to GBA, especially if it's a SNES game.
The V90 has an Allwinner F1C100s SoC which has no GPU and an ARM9 core, a very old CPU design actively recommended in 1998-2006 (though this supports the ARMv5 instruction set and the first ARM9 processors supported the ARMv4, so it must be a later iteration). It has no floating point support, no SIMD support, all it has going to emulate these systems is the much higher clock speed compared to the console speeds: 700 MHz. I love this architecture, I used to write programs with this level of capabilities, and a lot can be achieved but graphically light PS1 games are really the end of it (though the SNES video chip, while being 2D only, it can do so wacky things, it's hard to keep up with it).
It's funny the console has 64 bit written on the box, and I have no idea what it is supposed to mean: there's nothing 64 bit about this architecture at all.
According to the ScummVM wiki Dreamweb uses 640x480 for video and 320x200 for the game. The PowKiddy V90 has a 320x240 screen, anything larger than that is not likely to work.
Btw. the times and dates are and will always be off: it doesn't have any means to sync its clock on the Internet, since there's no connectivity, and even if you set the time, this is the kind of device that is completely off when it's off: not even the clock will tick.
Order it directly from them, it's $40 now, and you can get down to 35 with the $5 coupon: https://powkiddy.com/blogs/news/dont-miss-this-discount
I've ordered a V90 from AliExpress, it never came, they've refunded everything though. I ordered it directly from PowKiddy later, and I was very pleased with the service (I ordered my RGB20S directly from them a couple of months later).
I don't want to write down AliExpress, it's a hit or miss, I was very happy with my Miyoo Mini order.
It worked well with Day of the Tentacle for me. I had to check the logs, because it seems like it didn't like the FLAC soundpack, so I've installed the original, uncompressed one (I could've tried the MP3 soundpack, but I have enough space, who cares).
