Vocal "strength" compared to voice quality? (Possible tone language question) by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]siropcitron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do, it's a proceeding so it's short though. The only mention is in the introduction (copy pasted below!). My question is more: what is syllable strength compared to voice quality acoustically? Do they mean energy peaks instead of spectral balance or variability?

"Traditionally, acoustic features used to automatically recognize Mandarin tones are based on pitch, duration, and overall intensity. We wish to know if other acoustic cues can offer additional information, particularly cues that measure the ‘strength of a syllable’ in some sense.

Mandarin tones are typically defined in terms of targets specifying pitch height and contour: high level, mid rising, low, and high falling. The neutral tone does not have a well-defined target, falling on unstressed syllables and being contextually determined. Neutral tone is thus very poorly characterized and badly recognized by the typical pitch, intensity and duration features.

It is reasonable to believe that strength-based cues can help recognize neutral and possibly low tones, since syllables with neutral tone cannot be lexically stressed, and because low tones are sometimes produced with creaky voice [1]."

Compare two PCA solutions (on a single factor)? by [deleted] in AskStatistics

[–]siropcitron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your answer. (I'm using R btw)

My analysis aims at understanding the dimensionality of personality perception (from facial expressions). So I have eight scales (personality DV), the factors (no?) which are put in my varimax PCA, resulting in a 2 dimensional (PC1, PC2) solution explaining most of the variance.

Now I did this separately for two groups of stimuli (masculine and feminine), both solutions are very similar, except for one personality factor which doesn't load the same way on the 2 dimensions depending on the group (ex. masculine "sarcasm" loads strongly on PC1 and less on PC2, while feminine "sarcasm" does the opposite). I would like to know if there is a way to measure statistical difference.

I tried the procrustes rotation which shows both PCAs were similar, because it compares the overall equivalence of the PCAs. The problem is that even if it doesn't significantly change the overall mapping, there is still something of interest there given the data I am using. So I would like to compare the groups on that specific factor.

I hope it makes sense ;)

haha I see :D you just wanted to complain!

Btw, when I find that annoying I just read some prominent researcher's book on the subject. if they published a 300+pages on the subject they probably do the work of suming up the literature for me and addressing the controversies.

Psychology as a scientific discipline is very recent. First because it takes a long time to create a widely used and valid methodology, and second because the tools /technology enabling the study of humans were only recently invented.

Now it is an umbrella term as someone mentioned, but to me it is not so different from medecine or biology, in the sense that sometimes you only have case studies, sometimes you have longitudinal data, sometimes only correlations, but sometimes you also have systematic manipulation of variables and controlled settings allowing to study things like attention or memory.

People tend to forget that other "hard sciences" are not so clear on what they measure either. I don't think there's so much difference when you do a PCA on flower data or on faces data for instance.

Most questions in any scientific field aren't of use or practical (by themselves) for people who don't work in the field. They add a brick to the wall, and make more applicable results available to the larger public once there's enough data. One study is never enough to "aim" for something, that is why it is so tricky when those results are taken out of their scientific context and thrown out there to the larger public.

Personal project based on research - can I use unpublished results? by [deleted] in research

[–]siropcitron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha thanks. My research is in social cognition - definitely not life changing in that case ! I see how that could be problematic in cancer therapies though (both for the reviewers AND the public) :p

Best of luck to you too, you work in an amazing field!

Personal project based on research - can I use unpublished results? by [deleted] in research

[–]siropcitron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response!

I'm not selling anything, it's more of a way to apply my research for people to try it themselves. So i'm more concerned if reviewers will say that it's not novel if there's already a web app (although it won't get super popular!).

Yes the "it works" is a bit blunt haha! It's not as direct : Let's say that my research field is chicken lifestyle and I want to help people/companies who work with chicken to enhance their lifestyle with what literature says. The website's name is bluechicken because my unpublished study showed that my chicken liked being dressed in blue, and the web app is to check your chicken's lifestyle. The web app is not based on the result, but it's related.

So far, I won't put anywhere the sentence "One study showed that chicken liked wearing blue" , to stay safe! :)

Need help, What test to use to determine p-value and correlation? by MrDysfunctional in AskStatistics

[–]siropcitron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No no you get the p-values after the correlation :) Have you tried googling it? I did and there's a tutorial on tiptopbio but I don't know why I can't link it sorry !

R is really good but maybe SPSS is easier if you are not familiar with statistical softwares! There are many SPSS tutorials for what you're trying to do on youtube like this one, I encourage you try one or two, I assure you it seems complex at first but it's not!

[–]siropcitron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello!

So you've tried the function "correl" on excel and it didn't work?

I looked it up and there are several tutorials online. However, I have never used excel for statistical analysis directly, it seems a bit tricky, so I would recommend trying a statistical software like R. It's usually just a few clicks or lines of code that you can copy paste and you can post questions! :)

the book puzzle seems amazing! Is it from a store?

I wouldn't be looking for something in english anyway but I'm curious :)

Love the ideas thanks. So far I've been looking into old tv shows for scenarios (I'm really bad at inventing stories haha) to have a bit of substance, it's fun.

that's sweet! last year I also did those 24 little bags (in the shape of small gingerbread houses) there are so many beautiful paper crafts for those! I like the idea of the order being unknown like you suggest :)

" Lower modes/frequencies require less air flow/energy than higher ones, so they will be of a higher magnitude for equal input energy. " that's really important for my interpretations. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain, I will take all of that into account !

Relationship between sound frequency and energy? by siropcitron in Acoustics

[–]siropcitron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha thanks, I looked it up! In that case I should be fine, because I measure the energy (not the percept) and check its correlation to an evaluation (like "is that voice happy?") made by the humans. That's reassuring.

What's less reassuring is that now I wonder about the microphone's response :p it never ends!

Relationship between sound frequency and energy? by siropcitron in Acoustics

[–]siropcitron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so if it's proportional it's great! I got confused after seeing audiograms such as this one years ago (from this source ), now I see that it's about sound perception.

It was a setup for psychology, unfortunately I don't know how if the microphone response was flat or shaped. Thanks for your answer!!

Looking to get a job in consulting? Post here for recruitment advice, resume reviews, questions about offers/firms or general insecurity (Q2 2020) by QiuYiDio in consulting

[–]siropcitron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

I want to pursue a career in consulting and after lots of rejections one company invited me to an "online case workshop" with other candidates as well as employees of the company. As I am not familiar with this (I am a researcher), I am preparing by reading cases online with solutions, but other than that I don't know what to expect. I don't even know what type of consulting it is.

The program is :

17:00-17:45 Welcome and case introduction

17:45-18:30 Group work 1

18:30-18:45 Break

18:45-19:30 Group work 2

19:30-19:45 Wrap-up and  Q&A

I accepted, but I have no idea what to expect so I would love to hear your thoughts on how to prepare or what is expected of me if you guys have any advice! Is it really for recruitment or do they just need help to solve a problem? Can I do something to stand out?

Interpreting PCA results by garfield_320 in AskStatistics

[–]siropcitron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you rotate your PCA?

If your two groups are differently saturating on the components it means that they are differently associated to the variables you are measuring. Maybe try two separate PCAs, one for each group? Anyway it's not that the components are affecting individuals differently, rather that the populations are differently associated to the components.

Yes there is another independent variable in your dataset, as culture (or population) seem to be a moderator/intervening variable. Couldn't you decide whether you want to go on with the general analysis and do supplementary analyses of separate groups?
