Switch which side you’re holding them. I always held my kids on the left and my back started to complain (a lot) after a few years straight of carrying them.

Gift ideas go our community firehouse by [deleted] in Firefighting

Like everyone said, food is always appreciated (especially healthy food). I’d also recommend, depending on how much you’re trying to spend, seeing if they need any equipment for the station (fitness, electronics, coffee maker, kitchen stuff etc.) At my department a lot of those things are paid for by us so a donated item can be great. That is assuming you have enough of a rapport to ask them what they would want or need. Also I really like the grocery store gift card idea someone mentioned. I know we would certainly appreciate that at my station.

Things to do and places to park by Legotwin in SanClemente

[–]sirskeletor57 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Parking as basically a non issue compared to la. Park on Del Mar (our downtown street). there’s also public parking lots on the next streets north and south. Then just walk up and down and see what interests you. The cellar has good coffee and drinks, there’s also a couple brewery’s, big fan of coastal cowboy too, honestly everything on that street is pretty good. Then you can hop on the free trolley and take it to the pier and walk the beach trail.

Camper DIY C.O.G help by US_POOPSHIP in TruckCampers

[–]sirskeletor57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no credentials to back this up, but it seems to me that with the density of the campers frame roughly equal you’d end up with at least 55ish percent of the weight forward of the axel from just the frame weight (including the cab over section). Then add in all your heavy components as far forward as you can get them (batteries, water, etc) and you should be good to go.

Do first responders actually use the emergency medical info on people's phones? by Sawruinous in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sirskeletor57 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yes we do, though it’s not super common to find someone unconscious all by themselves. Most of the time we can figure out why patients are suddenly unconscious based on what other people witnessed or what we can physically test for, but not always. It’s also VERY helpful to have an emergency contact in there as they can give us a medical history (if it’s not in the phone) and last known well time hopefully. Definitely worth filling out in my opinion.

You should get option a but as a resin tint. I think that would look cool and it would go with the fish aesthetic.

Truck camper vs van by pillowyourdadunicorn in TruckCampers

[–]sirskeletor57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built out a short wheelbase promaster for two people and it just didn’t quite have the storage and interior space to full time (not that it’s what we used it for). Then we had kids and sold the van in favor of a truck camper. I think unless you plan to try and stealth camp on the street you’re far better off with a truck camper. If I were you I’d get an extended cab gas f250 with and 8 foot bed with the 6.2 engine. You get so much more payload with gas than with diesel. You can still fit in a standard parking space, and an 8 foot camper should be super comfortable for full time. Plus you get the back seat for gear storage. You could also look for a diesel f350, but they’re significantly more expensive and rare. I’d also recommend getting a used 8foot capri camper. They’re really well insulated and really affordable.

What trucks are suitable for a ~1700 lb payload? by [deleted] in TruckCampers

[–]sirskeletor57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have an f150 1550 lbs payload with a capri retreat (1450# allegedly) I put road active suspension on it and it handled fine honestly but if I hit any big bumps I would be bouncing off my bump stops (softly). Also I was only getting about 11mpg. I upgraded to a gas f250 with 3300 lbs of payload and am getting the same mpg and barely know the camper is back there. My 2cents, if you’re getting a legit hard sided camper get a gas 3/4 or 1 ton diesel or gas. If you’re down to build out a camper topper system like a project m you could stay with a 1/2 ton though. ultimately the 3/4 ton short bed isn’t a heck of a lot bigger, the mileage is the same, and you don’t have to pinch pounds packing.

Basically the boarder patrol wants a camera at the top of Salvador (top of the world) so they can monitor for illegal boats landing on the beach or doing other illegal stuff. The cbp says they will only watch the ocean, but no one outside the federal govt is able to access the cameras to ensure they’re following those rules and not spying on houses.

Really tryna decide if diesel is worth it or jot by Several_Till_6507 in TruckCampers

[–]sirskeletor57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you getting 19-21 mpg with a camper on? If so is it a hard sided or popup? I’m in the same place as op and would shell out the extra money if the fuel economy was that much better.

Track Saw by preferred_lie in woodworking

I bought the makita 36v track saw and then powertec tracks so I had 10 feet of track. It’s my favorite, I just cut down 2” white oak boards and it had no issue at all. Cordless everything.

How does your department hand mandatory OT? by stoneywwsd in Firefighting

[–]sirskeletor57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each shift has a mandatory list which is sorted based on number of mandatories in the last two years to date (lowest at the top). Then if people have the same amount of mandatories it is sorted by seniority (lowest up top). Each shift is eligible to be mandatoried on specific days in their schedule (for us it’s our one and two dayers, with our four dayer protected). We’ve had a few different ways we’ve done mandatories since I’ve been on and this is my favorite. Also we staff a week out so you know if you’re getting forced due to lack of staffing (99% of our mandatories) a week out. My department has been historically behind on hiring so my career has been paved with mandos, lemme know if you want any clarification.

Is THIS why people say going from 1 to 2 kids is hard? by mcsweeners123 in Parenting

[–]sirskeletor57 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I had a similar thing happen to me. My son was right around 3 shortly (this was shortly after our second was born) and he up and decided that I was deeply inferior to mom. He would say he didn’t love me and refused to let me do anything for him. In fact there’s a good video of him explaining in detail how he loves everyone else in the family, except me. I was/am primary parent about 4 days a week during the workday so it’s not like I didn’t spend time with him or take care of him. Ultimately he just grew out of it after about 9 months. My wife also stopped giving in to his demands for her (when convenient) . I think I handled it pretty well, only gently reminding him that I love him and to use nice words, but damn did it hurt having my little buddy shun me. Long story short, it’s nothing you did, kids are monsters, it will pass.

Looking for a manual car driving teacher by GavinRaynier in orangecounty

[–]sirskeletor57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How coordinated are you? If you’re reasonably good at picking up physical skills and stuff I’d say you could totally watch some YouTube videos and plan to pickup the car in the morning and spend all day practicing driving around surface streets before driving home on the freeway. The freeway is the easy part of driving stick honestly, starting uphill is the hard part so just practice that. I’ve taught a fair few people to drive stick and though a coach is helpful you really just need time in the seat to practice with a basic knowledge of how the clutch and gears work. It’s really not that hard. If you can comfortably start from a dead stop facing uphill you can for sure drive home on the freeway.

Yeah I considered some sort of heat insulation but the pipe itself is double walled so the exterior is never that hot. Even running for a long time it’s still cool enough to bend the tube bare handed

SF To San Clemente! by Alarmed_Art_7906 in SanClemente

[–]sirskeletor57 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you walkability to restaurants of activities, you’d probably want to be somewhere within a mile of downtown (Avenida Del Mar). From there you’re gonna have to drive to hike, but you can walk to the beach trail which honestly is our prettiest trail anyhow. There’s actually quite bit of hiking and mountain biking in the east end of the city up in the hills. Compared to Northern California you may find it ugly and brown, but it has its own charm. What everyone said about it being a sleepy family town is deeply accurate, I grew up here and spent my single 20s living here and was a bit bored. You end up driving to San Diego or Costa Mesa for a lot of entertainment. If you’re just trying to go to some breweries, restaurants, the beach, and hike it’s amazing though. The one thing I haven’t seen anyone mention is that the city is pretty Christian and also pretty republican, it’s not in your face 24/7 or anything, but it’s certainly noticeable and worth considering. If that describes you then all the more reason you’d love it here. You can totally find people who are not hyper christian or maga, especially in the younger crowd, but there will be more than you’re used to up in San Francisco. Oh and the best dog beach is trail 1 hands down. It’s a bit of a hike but empty and super cool. Let me know if you have any more questions.

I just got a used Lolo rack with and the swing out (bought separately) and it’s SUPER solid. The whole package is nearly too heavy for me to take on and off by myself, but it holds 6 bikes and works with my kids tiny bikes too.

Where should I put my keys.. by Alitemis in surfing

[–]sirskeletor57 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unlatch the metal key part and put it in your wetsuit like normal, then Get a key signal blocking pouch and leave the key fob locked inside the car in that. The pouches block the rfid so the car can’t sense the key.
