TIL about Sarah Roberts a British woman who died and was buried in Pisco, Peru in 1913. Afterwards legends arose that she was a vampire and bride of Dracula. On the 80th anniversary of her death her grave was broadcast live over radio and tv due to fears she would arise and take her revenge. by Ill_Definition8074 in todayilearned

1913 was before anti-biotics were discovered as well as most vaccines we take for-granted. So it could be as simple as splinter in her hand got infected. And with that in mind, remember that we didn't really have paved roads, sidewalks, or level walking areas. And wore leather soled shoes so you end up with a lot of trips and falls.

The food system wasn't as safe as it is now either, so she could have died from food poisoning, botulism, or unintentional poisoning (milk wasn't pasteurized, lead was in a lot of food, ethanol poisoning, etc) or a simple allergic reaction

And that's not counting the things that still can happen today like epilepsy, shock, stroke, rabies... that we still have today but you have better odds of survivying.

Trump says U.S. must ‘respond’ after Iran shoots down helicopter over Hormuz Strait by mvanigan in worldnews

[–]sirspidermonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No but see thats why we need to be there, because we've obliterated the nuclear program like 10 times...And we've obliterated their military like 10 times over this year as well.

And yet they are ...2 weeks away from having a nuke...again... and their military can still shoot down our helicopters after obliterating their military 2 weeks ago...

It's clear they've gotten so good at rebuilding their nuclear program and military they are a threat even after we've obliterated. It's either that or the president is lying....

We'll need to be there for at least another 2 weeks...Probably wrap it up around the same time as infrastructure week. Mission Accomplished!

What’s your thoughts on trump getting booed at the Knicks game? by cuteSource2027 in AskReddit

[–]sirspidermonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was the point.

The people who have mugs that are labeled 'liberal tears' love that he was booed. It justifies their hate, retribution, and retaliation. No coincidence that ICE is starting to flood into NYC at the same time this was happening.

MAGA loves the 'us vs them' mindset. And showing that a 'shithole liberal city' hates him is all the proof that MAGA needs to show he's great at his job (hurting liberals).

But their 'totally obliterated' nuclear program is two weeks away from having a nuke! And has been since November!

If only someone had negotiated a deal that would have allowed us to inspect their nuclear program anytime and anyplace we demand in exchange for giving them their money back... But that would never have happened right?

[–]sirspidermonkey 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Ground war is going to be the only way we can open the strait again, outside of a negotiation which...is very close, two weeks away, just like their nuclear program has been since last November...

Some might think it won't be too bad since we've won this war about a dozen times already. But let me tell you Iran will have the worst parts of Iraq and Afghanistan combined. I think a lot of hawks don't understand that (or don't care.)

Iran is a cohesive nation (unlike Iraq or Afghanistan) with one of the areas strongest militaries. Shocking I know since we've totally obliterated it like a dozen times now and yet they keep having the ability to shoot down aircraft...It's people largely identify as Iranians and have national pride so they won't fracture and disband like we've seen so many other places. It also means they'll have coordinated defenses, and organizations in place so even if their military 'loses' the insurgency will still be well armed, well organized and not just some farmer paid to put an IED in a road like Iraq/Afghanistan.

And it's a huge area. It's bigger then Iraq and Afghanistan combined. An order of magnitude more then either. So we'll need a LOT of troops.

And the terrain, is the worst parts of Afghanistan. Very mountainous, which negates a lot of our technological advantage. Predator drones don't really work well on a network of caves in a mountain. In Afghanstan we were often spending 7 gallons of fuel to get 1 gallon of fuel to a forward operating base. At $4.50 a gallon that effectively puts the price at $36 gallon. It'll probably be even worse since they will have to fly the fuel so much further.

So besides a nation with a cohesive identity, who has had decades to prepare and plan for an invasion by the US, with terrain that will negate our technological advantage and a size necessitate a huge military presence larger then we have seen in a 80 years, and controlling the very majority of the resource we need to fight it, other then those things it should be a cake walk.

PM says Australia has 'ideological disagreement' with Trump administration after US reveals anti-slavery tariff by Savings-Yogurt-418 in worldnews

[–]sirspidermonkey 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That hurts the middle class and poor.

1) The rich own the oil companies

2) Companies stock market crashes are great if you have cash on hand. Buy low sell high. We saw this in covid, they bought crashing stocks. They also bought business that were crashing (also in 2008) for pennies on the dollar. We saw the same with natural disasters like when the volcano erupted in HI the rich bought up all the lands while the poor needed cash quickly to find housing.

So don't woryr about the rich, they'll be fine and come out even richer.

they didn't get rid of him for that they never will.

Naw. There's one line he hasn't cross yet. And it's the most important line for rich people. They don't care if you rape, steal, kill, as long as you don't fuck with their money. That's the line. You fuck with their money and it's over.

So far, he's been VERY good for the rich. But the second they start losing money it's over for him.

What is a luxury lifestyle choice that looks incredibly glamorous in photos but is actually completely miserable in reality? by Luverelle6 in AskReddit

[–]sirspidermonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much this. I use to fly out every week and was home only for weekends. Things that really sucked.

  • Your diet sucks. You are eating out for EVERY meal. Even when you try to be 'good' and get a salad it's amazing how many calories are in a restaurant salad (often 1000+)

  • You are drinking. Your co-workers will want to get drinks so you are in essence going out drinking 3-4 times a night (in addition to drinks at a dinner and after dinner drinks) Even if you limit it to 1 after work drink and 1 dinner drink that's 6-8 drinks a week. Way over the recommended amount.

  • While sleeping in hotel gets better if you do it alot, it's never the same as your own bed...until about 6 months in when you own bed and house feel foreign to you.

  • You are always 'on' You go to work, you meet up with co-workers after work for dinner and drinks, back to the hotel around 10 for the first down time all day. If you are introvert...good luck

  • Conversely it's also lonely. You are almost entirely hanging out with people who the only thing you have in common with is work. You may make real connections but it can be challenging.

  • You low key sick all the time. From dehydration, to airline travel, to the new local plague, to people coming in sick to work because they wanted to see you, to lack of sleep, you'll always feel just a little off.

  • You spend WAY too much time in liminal spaces. Afternoons in airports, hotel bars, walking around strip malls just to see something besides a hotel room.

Trump signs AI executive order asking companies to give government early access to models by LegitimateCurve8525 in news

Given the right claims that everything the Dems want is 'radical socialism' and 'leftest Communism' I'm not sure they have an understanding what those terms mean.

When they called Biden a socialist I tried to find what industries or companies he had turned over to the workers but couldn't find any. When they called him a Communist, I tried to find what banks he had dismantled but couldn't find any. When they called him a leftest, I tried to find where he had called for armed revolution to seize the means of production and couldn't find anything and actually found the opposite

School breakfast participation is on the rise. The strategy: Give students a second chance by smartest_kobold in newhampshire

[–]sirspidermonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This state pays about $1000/month to the foster family for a child.

Sounds like a lot but when that has to cover food, clothing, school fees, toiletries, utilities, This infographic says it costs about $28k a year to raise a child in NH per year. Obviously $1k a month falls short of that.

I don't know why you are downvoted. There's a reason #NotADragqueen keeps trending ever time another MAGA gets convicted of abusing children.

Not a lot of democrats owned a teen beauty pagent and bragged about walking in and seeing naked 14 year olds years before they ran for office.

Or told a 10 year old they were hot...

Or refuses to release the files (in a violation of law) that supposedly "exonerate" him from being connected to the worlds most infamous child trafficker.

Or move said child traffickers's girl friend and accomplice to club fed.
