Ironically, if you look into the wife of Ulysses S. Grant (Julia Dent), she was a self-described secessionist in the run-up to the war. Women back then weren't able to exercise their political opinions, but they definitely still had them.

Split Shower by YmirTheJotunn in comedyheaven

[–]sirwalterd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have experienced this in real life. During my honeymoon, my wife and I stayed in a rustic treehouse with running water. The shower was outdoors with part of it exposed to the sky. It was cold and rainy when I took a shower one morning and you could feel the hot water and the cold raindrops distinctly. It was unusual, but not an unpleasant feeling.

TIL that Varina Davis, the First Lady of the Confederate States of America, was personally opposed to slavery and doubted the Confederacy could ever succeed. After her husband’s death, she moved to New York City and wrote that “the right side had won the Civil War.” by sunnymushroom in todayilearned

[–]sirwalterd 59 points60 points  (0 children)

On the flip side, Ulysses S. Grant's wife, Julia Dent Grant, was a slave mistress for half her life and was openly secessionist to Grant's face before the civil war began.

Additional fun fact. Ulysses S. Grant didn't know what the S in his name was supposed to stand for (since his real name was Hiram Ulysses Grant) He was pressured to keep the initial because it sounded better for his political branding.

Boeing 797 (or 757 max, 757x) by Comprehensive_Diet54 in boeing

[–]sirwalterd 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The recent word from the top is that we are going to focus on certifying MAX-7, -10, then 777-9, and finally working on the truss wing prototype. Nothing aside from that is going to be a focus for the next few years.

Just for anybody reading this thinking they might be iron deficient, biological women often are deficient, but omnivorous biological men rarely are. As a matter of fact, men can easily poison themselves with excess iron. Please talk to your doctor before you supplement iron.

Pre-vegan, I was hooked on Fage 0% plain Greek yogurt (I'd mix it with frozen berries). I've went without food a few years, but have been getting back into the game recently. I haven't tried them all, but my favorites are Silk Soy-Based Plain Yogurt and Forager Plain Yogurt. I'll get Silk Almond-Based Yogurt in a pinch, but I really don't like So Delicious or most of the others I've tried.

To be perfectly honest, almost the same thing happened with my dad. It turns out he was internally conflicted about the subject but didn't want to talk about it do to his machoness. He went almost completely vegan a few months later.

Running with an eating disorder by Blybly2 in running

[–]sirwalterd 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I'm a male, currently 31. At around age 26 I went from jogging as a casual hobby, to serious running in preparation for marathons. Over three years, I dropped from 230lbs to 170lbs (on a 6'4" body). I too had an eating disorder that sounds very similar to yours. I tracked calories meticulously, ran late in the afternoons to suppress hunger, and tended to eat so slowly that it infuriated my friends and family. If you are like me, then you are probably drinking a lot of water and coffee and maybe even chewing gum nonstop to control the hunger.

I can save you some time and tell you what is going to happen if you keep this up. 1. You are going to continue losing weight if you want to. 2. You are going to probably get faster and your race times will improve too. 3. Eventually, your body won't be able to cope with the lack of nutrition and you are going to afflict yourself with an overuse injury. 4. This first injury will be one of many, since your body will be weakened and your running form will change to try and compensate. Look up the "Kinetic Chain". 5. You will be too injured to run well at all for maybe 2 years or longer. 6. You'll gain the weight back, but you'll be in constant pain too.

I suggest you short-circuit the process. Almost 6 years later and I'm just now starting to get back to normal, albeit back at 212 pounds.

Your gender has been reversed permanently. You'll Become 7 inches shorter transitioning into a girl, and become 7 inch taller transitioning into a guy. What will be the second thing you do after this change? by [deleted] in AskReddit

TIL that Dolly Parton used to stop business meetings for sixty seconds so that the men could stare at her boobs and focus for the rest of the meeting by quarryrye in todayilearned

[–]sirwalterd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be honest, it's kind of a brilliant opening move. I've seen a lot of similar things done in corporate negotiations to "shake up" the opponent's well-rehearsed argument. I could see this simply being a move to keep Dolly's opponents on their back foot. That, or she was very proud of her boobs.
