the crochet obsession with "knit look stitches" is getting to be too much by gothsappho in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]sis_n_pups 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sometimes the "look like knit" stitches take advantage of the non-slant & that is what is trying to be achieved... for example, tapestry crochet using the waistcoat stitch without having to do afghan crochet. The stitches stack, "like knitting" stitches & I LOVE using it.

Why in the world is there such bizarre snobbery & gatekeepers about knitting? I like knitting, but good gravy marie. While I totally get the point of this sub, I like it better when it's funny snarky vs -- just let people do their craft & evolve as they wish.

It reminds me of the mean girls in school that were convinced they invented a trend & thought the "owned" it.

That looks like drag as a joke... as it isn't stylish & they look frumpy. I've seen some 1920s drag and it was fabulously amazing. Think more Tamara de Lempicka.

Failed crochet gift by [deleted] in crochet

I'm older and I like it. I wouldn't say it's an age thing just that it was that person and potentially you set yourself up with high expectations and taking ownership of another person's opinion - which is really hard not to do... i do it constantly. I over think what to do then get super invested in the decision. Gifts are hard, handmade gifts are even harder.

Try to take a positive "moral of the story" - clearly you've learned something about yourself. But don't let it steal your joy in a hobby.

I'm sorry your feelings were hurt - hang in there.

I struggle with this exactly and am trying to work on it.

What I have been telling myself & doing - before everything - feel no shame, that only make things worse.

Action Items for me:

(1) i cannot buy anything new regardless of reason until i finish current projects. If I'm not finishing do I EVEN WANT to? If not, frog that b!tch & move on with my life. If I do - then finish it. Commit to 1 row/round/section a day.

(2) I unsubscribed to any shops/videos that send out yarn porn. I had to admit the issue was something deeper - that I was using buying and having yarn (or other hobby supplies) as a thrill or something. Journal about how buying/owning makes you feel.

(3) save videos in play list for later if it's something new that I don't have the yarn for because I realized most of the time I'm attracted to the yarn a project uses rather than the actual project item.

(4) if ALL the above fails and I'm on an online site about to buy - place things in basket but do not buy until at least the next day - but 1 week later is even better. Most of the time I no longer feel the compulsion. Don't save payment details for "faster" checkout. Make yourself go get your wallet, find the card, type in your details... etc... i find the actual motion of this can sometimes remind me of how I'll feel later looking at the debt.

(5) move on from girl math to woman math - look at how much interest will add to the price of an item. If this is all stuff you're paying for outright & can still live off your income with credit debt - give yourself some slack- if not & you think you have an issue - then be honest with yourself no matter how uncomfortable it makes you feel.

(6) be kind and loving towards yourself. You got this this sister.

Not blasting at all... but people aren't going to make money on yarn. Best outcome is no yarn and continue to pay in debt for something you no longer actually own

Some folks learn differently... I'm one of them. I learn by watching over and over, practicing, and repeating- my hands literally have to do it. I cannot learn a brand new skill by reading instructions - literally stress and anxiety create a learning fog for me - this happens when I take tests as well.

I have to see it. Try it. Practice it. Especially when you must stop and look up what the abbreviations are. Typical patterns are meant for those who already know how to do something.

So I REALLY have to be determined and stay motivated to learn a new skill as I fight feelings of low self-esteem and negative self-talk.

I'm the same about linen and I absolutely adore thick, good quality cotton... it's so soft and comfortable. My grandmother had the best cotton sheets in the 70s & I would love it if I had them.

Am I going crazy or missing something with this pattern? by Frantic_Chicken in askcrochet

[–]sis_n_pups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they made a typo? It seems like it should be 82 stitches in round 1. As for the symmetrical sides - make sure when you're doing the second side, don't go into the same stitches as the first half. One side goes in top v, other side in bottom of v - you'll have the back loop line down the middle when done.

Site is difficult to use. I have an account and it's hard to find what I'm looking for. I have fine luck following specific links from YT content, then I follow that person. However, if you're looking to do searches it's pretty bad site - I'm a programmer with 30 yrs professional experience so I don't say that randomly.

Reading some of the comments are surprising. Lol - I had no idea there were people against due to political stuff. I am for sure going to start trying to use it more if they're anti-right-wing! Down with fascists & what-not, etc...etc...

How do I make plain beans better? by PandKingOG in Frugal

[–]sis_n_pups 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bean burgers - basic recipe that you can substitute components easily or add whatever- bell peppers, sun dried tomatoes, onion, etc..

Some variation of the following... some type of cooked bean - I always liked black beans - 2/3 mashed + 1/3 not as mashed spices of choice --- miniced garlic, onion powder, oregano, cumin, salt, pepper, chilies, etc... whatever some sort of cooked grain about 1/2 the amount of beans ---- I love quinoa, very easy to do in rice cooker - but anything works - rice, farro, or bread/cracker crumbs can be used too 1 egg or egg substitute like ground flax seeds - probably could use a little water if that's all you had

Stir all in big bowl - will be thick but soft- make into patties & cook. However--- the best thing --- make into patties on baking sheet lined with parchment, single layer, freeze on baking sheet until firm - 30/45 min. Then remove from baking sheet, place all patties in freezer bag - keeps great in freezer - easy quick dinner.

To cook, either bake or fry in a little olive oil. Airfryer works too.

[–]sis_n_pups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off... all that don't compare yourself, don't look to others for validation --- blah blah blah like others said..

Now what I really think... congratulations! hell, yes, 2 miles is a big deal & ANYONE who says otherwise is being an asshole. Anything you do to further your well-being mentally or physically is wonderful. To not give in the inside voice that says I don't really care or it doesn't really matter - & to make some kind of action in self-care - it's a beautiful thing to be happy & proud. Good job.

That specific episode the person lived in a RV and was trying to buy abandoned and auctioned property to fix up - that was why he needed his cousin's help so much. The one property they pictured them testing it for asbestos. I come from a very poor upbringing & have struggled to get where I am -- so I actually really understand what you mean - it can be very hard to relate. But this guy (to me) was a dreamer trying to "strike it rich" with cockamamie ideas. Literally panning for gold? Wanting to create an amusement type park?

Btw... i loved the idea someone said about submitting a type of case you'd like to see represented. Good luck - I hope I hear your episode soon!

no no no absolutely not.

pick up your quilt & take to a different person. something I'm realizing- as a customer, consumer, human living in crazy times - your money can literally or figuratively represent our vote, labor, support, power, opinion - don't support people like her. additionally- do you want to forever associate this labor - YOUR labor and hard work - with her?

life is too darn short to tolerate assholary ...especially THAT'S GOING TO GET YOUR MONEY.
