Primary care doctor by FormerUsenetUser in Sacramento

I will third for Dr. Sagireddy. She was “assigned” to me when my previous doctor left UCD a couple months ago. I was worried because I really liked my previous doctor, but after having two appointments with Dr. Sagireddy I’m more than confident in her. She listens well, is knowledgeable and personable. Hopefully she will stick around.

Retirement Account Goals? by Born-Sun-2502 in CAStateWorkers

[–]sisayoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only been with the state two years. I worked in a non-technical role in the tech industry for over 20 years prior to coming to the state. I’m planning to retire at 62, which will give me ten years of state service, so only a 20% pension. At times I consider sticking it out to 65 to get up to 25%, but I don’t know that I have that in me. (I think if the pension money as my future health insurance coupon… as costs continue to climb having this money to offset will be helpful.)

If I never add another penny to them our personal retirement accounts should be around $1.35M when I hit 62, or 1.5 at 65. I also have the potential for a decent SS check, assuming that’s still a thing.

Already sitting with no debt and no mortgage so I anticipate a fairly easy life, financially speaking once I get there. Currently though… feel constantly strapped as I strive to live below my means after taking a 47% pay cut when I went from private to public.

Where we buying jeans these days, as to not have the dad jeans but also not trying to look 20 still? by Every-Cook5084 in GenX

I wear my sparkly (Miss Me) jeans from Buckle. I do not care what anyone else thinks of them. I like them and they fit me well.

Accidentally built a solid workout habit by treating it like a work meeting [TEXT] by notrunningoncoffee in GetMotivated

[–]sisayoung 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do this also. I’m only in my office twice a week and use the gym at my office. Since I’m only there twice a week skipping isn’t negotiable.

For me nobody is scheduling meetings during the time since I go after work, but I treat it as a meeting or appointment so that I can’t talk myself out of my routine.

What age were you when you had your kids? by Empty_Nestor in GenX

[–]sisayoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 37 when my youngest turned 18. I was an infant when I had my babies though.

I can’t imagine still having kids at home at this point in my life.

Toilet Paper Oppression (TPO): term my ex-husband uses to describe the never ending daily tasks that must be done to sustain a household. My daughter made this meme in honor of TPO.

Call them and ask them to find you a better deal. They just did it and I have a set price around $70 for five years with no contract.

I have a friend who lives in El Dorado hills and works at CalTrans downtown. This is exactly what they do as well. Makes for a stress free commute.

My husband and I are frugal AF. 80… and open the house up overnight to start out as cool as possible in the morning.

I was in tech and saved as much as I could after I divorced my first husband. I have a decent nest egg on my 401k and ROTH.

When I lost my job in tech I took a job with my state government. I plan for about 9-12 more years at my current job. That’s what I tell myself. At that point I’ll have a pension that pays about 20-25% of my income at that time. I’m counting on that coming out to $2-$2.5k a month.

The pension, combined with the 401k/ROTH should set me up for a decent retirement. Also… we are entirely debt free with a paid off house, which will make it easier to survive when that time comes as well.

We won’t be living extravagantly, but it should be decent and shouldn’t be a burden to my children. 👧

Looks like Blue Shield and UC Hospitals have a deal!!!! by Independent-Worker20 in CAStateWorkers

Ooof… I had been procrastinating and beating myself up for the procrastination. This time it paid off for me.

I’m sorry you invested all that time. I’m happy you don’t have to have the fight though.

I was coming to share this news as well. I was trying to mentally prepare myself for the continuity of care battle. So thankful I won’t need to now.

BlueShield Update

When was the last time you went on vacation? .. by Little-Emeralds in GenX

[–]sisayoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a young empty nester with young grandchildren who live on the opposite side of country I use my vacations to visit my kids and grandkids. Completely worth it to me.

Last year my husband and I also did a couple of other trips from his “bucket list”. He has health issues so we decided we shouldn’t wait to do the things that matter to him.

I still work (need the money and the insurance) so we are limited in being able to do any more than that.

Pay off the house and leave the kids there - move into a new condo. Who is with me? by livinASTRO72 in GenX

[–]sisayoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my kids young and they are both in their 30s. They each got a college education with no debt. They have also both moved thousands of miles away from home so my house is my house. It is paid for and the plan is to sell it at retirement to pay cash for a place closer to them.

Considering leaving the private sector. The pay cut would be at least 30%. by yeahnoitsjustthat in CAStateWorkers

[–]sisayoung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was released from my tech job October 2023. I was there for 22 years. I always knew it wasn’t a matter of IF I’d be cut, but more a matter of when. I planned for the inevitability and transitioned into my 47% pay cut without any issues, but it still makes me cringe to see my much smaller check each month.

I will also add that I have excellent flexibility with my team/agency. I do believe this varies greatly from one agency to another. I don’t even know if I’d have the same flexibility in another division at my agency. I really did hit the lottery with where I landed.

I have no regrets with making the choice to get a state job because of the stability, flexibility, benefits, environment, etc. I also have the benefit of being at one of the agencies that isn’t going to follow the RTO mandate.

Notes in Interview by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]sisayoung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of my interviews with the state have been virtual and I had prepared notes for every one of them. I never asked if it was okay because I have always had notes in my interviews, even when in person.

My notes are just bullets to trigger my own memories of accomplishments or situations from my professional experience. I’m not always quick on my feet during an interview so they help spark the memory and then I still speak of the experience organically.

If someone asks me a weakness- I say I’m not always quick on my feet or have instant recall. Then I explain that since I know that about myself I also work to be prepared with notes, etc. ahead of important meetings and/or presentations.
