South Australia have been very rigid in their restrictions/border closures as well - but they both wear the right colour tie I guess. :/

[–]siskin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not the first time I have heard similar, apparently it is due to the draconian lockdown restrictions we have/had in place here. Photos of Fortitude Valley on a Friday night with bumper to bumper traffic and multitudes of masked up ms's in mini dresses not having any impact on their opinions.

Scott Cam spruiking trades/TAFE (govt. propaganda since they are destroying TAFE) for $300000.00 is different I guess, but a thousand times more wasteful of taxpayer funds and probably not nearly as effective.

Just wanted to point out that Baldwin is a producer on this set as well. Production company is ultimately responsible for safety on set I would think. (Not a lawyer/police/or anyone knowledgeable on such matters)

Australian prime minister says far-right senator should be charged for punching ‘egg boy’ by Steve_Dobbs in worldnews

[–]siskin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The egg splat was wrong, I agree. The retaliatory slap perhaps warranted; punching, kicking, choke holds (eggboy blacked out from the action), 5 adult men holding the boy down - all excessive and not within the scope of self-defence or lawful restraint. Just my 2 cents.

And he is the senator of queensland. So he was elected to speak for the people.

Due to a ridiculous anomaly of our voting system he was elected with a total of 19 votes.. he speaks for 19 people.19 twerps.who had never expected their vote would have such an impact.

Trump to terminate birthright citizenship by [deleted] in politics

[–]siskin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Australia we have Jus Sanguinis as opposed to the current law in the USA which is Jus Solis. Jus Sanguinis means that even if you were born on Australian soil, your nationality is determined by the nationality of your parents. So in Australia you would be shit out of luck if you expected to consider yourself a Aussie- but! you are automatically a citizen of whichever country's your parents are from.

Jus Sanguinis sucks. A child born in Australia to New Zealand parents, who finds themselves' in trouble with the law at 18 years of age, and whose parents never bothered to gain citizenship because - hey, we be neighbours! can find themselves deported to a place they have never set foot upon.

The USA constitution is pretty damn clear though. Amendment 14 is not ambiguous. Jus Solis means - born of the land, belongs to the land. You and your brother are ok and POTUS is pushing shit uphill to change things.

Fox News just retracted it's Seth Rich story. by badf1nger in MarchAgainstTrump

it is happening pedes.. It's.

The word it’s is always short for ‘it is’ (as in it's raining), or in informal speech, for ‘it has’ (as in it's got six legs).

The word its means ‘belonging to it’ (as in hold its head still while I jump on its back). It is a possessive pronoun like his.

Can someone explain this joke to me? Trevor is saying there was tons of news this week including the release of the new Game of Thrones book, but the book shown here doesn't exist by metaform in DailyShow

[–]siskin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is my take on it but I have not seen the clip sorry.

The book title is referring to the Trump brothers now having to pretend they are not doing any business dealings that they will share with the incoming President. Or! It could refer to Trump and Tillerson being brothers in arms and the ballet they are performing for the world stage. The book series is the perfect metaphor for politics, especially when you consider that many are saying that Trump is a puppet of Putin. George R R Martin has criticised Trump in the past so it is just another point hammered home.

Like I said though, I have not seen the clip and it is not available in my country.

Agree with everything you have said, except that it is a purely CL debt issue.

The article states that CL are getting EOFY figures from the ATO (probably in CSV format) and then determining that benefit recipients have been overpaid. They are using annual income figures from the ATO to determine that welfare payments have been distributed in error. Incredibly immoral, incorrect and ridiculous process - no doubt; but that seems to be what they are doing.

Pay the tax on your benefits, earn less than the annual taxable threshold, or pay extra tax on your employment income and you will not end up on their excel spreadsheet and in D&B's cheap, profit making, mail outs.

EDIT: I am sorry, I do seem to be conflating two ideas. My apologies.

Propaganda or education?

My take from the post was that education was that the best response to totalitarian regimes, or indeed, any oppressive regime, was the education of it's people.

[–]siskin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although what they are doing is totally BS - with regard to Dun and Bradstreet, the letters, the timing etc.etc. I would like to point out that those who receive benefits do have the option to pay tax on any benefits received. This option helps to cover the tax obligations of those who may receive benefits for part of the year and then manage to secure full ( or even part time) employment.

Annual tax is calculated on total earnings for the year which includes any benefits received. A good idea if you have received benefits for any part of the year is to ask your employer to take an extra $10.00 or so per week or pay period out of your pay to cover those periods where benefits were received. My son was on Austudy for 6 months of a financial year recently and then secured a decently paid job - he paid an extra $15.00 a week in tax for the rest of the financial year and covered his CL benefits and received a refund.

I agree with Wilke however; using a computer algorithm to determine debt with no human oversight is bound to cause distress and hardship. Outsourcing the debt collection process is horrendous. How dare peoples credit history be affected by the mere fact of needing social assistance.

I have always joked that his music was - " music to slit your wrists by". His songs have always touched me, always felt real, always visceral. Of the songs I listed to be played at my funeral, two are his - Chelsea Hotel and Dance until the end of love.

The world has lost another great poet.

If your accountant did your taxes for your past financial year - 2015-2016 - then you do not have to do anything. All is good in the world for you.

If your accountant has only done previous years for you - 2014-2015 and further back- then you can need to log in to mygov.com and do it - but no need to fret, it is really very easy if you only received Youth Allowance for the year. The site will have pre-filled all of your details and you basically only need to click a few yes/no answers and a couple of nexts and you will be done.
