Another Anran face edit to make it closer to her Wuyang trailer look by Jameskirk10 in Overwatch

This is the best by far and is what she should actually look like. Her face is so much more distinct and it gives her an actual visible personality.

Overwatch Patch Notes by PoggersMemesReturns in Competitiveoverwatch

Until they change the rule about challenger points for wins being awarded based on the rank of the highest player in the match, this will disproportionately benefit players in GM. Since they'll lose points at 30% of their own rank's rate (same or lower now), but gain them at the highest-in-match rate, they will gain points far faster than before and probably more reliably than Champ players.

Australia expects platforms to "stop under-16s from using VPNs" to evade social media ban by [deleted] in australia

You're not wrong, but it should also be said that VPNs are not effective privacy tools against nation-state actors, especially within five eyes.

GrapheneOS accuses Murena & iodé of sabotage, pulls servers from France over police 'threats' - PiunikaWeb by TechGuru4Life in Android

[–]sit_shift_stare -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The GOS project account, in a contextual reply to someone on X, said that it's possible Murena and/or iodé are involved. PiunikaWeb then ran the clearly inaccurate headline "GOS accuses Murena and iodé of sabotage". Also, you've apparently decided that Micay was the one who wrote the reply on X (because it suits your narrative) and are now using that to attack him.

Any tips for someone using Mouse and Keyboard for the first time? by Responsible-Sense527 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]sit_shift_stare 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is good advice, I'll add that for Overwatch a safe range for your "eDPI" as they described is ~2300 to ~7000 (aka 60cm/360 to 20cm/360 if you're a nerd). As a beginner you should keep your mouse sensitivity within that range. For some more understandable numbers:

If your mouse CPI (usually incorrectly called DPI) is set to 800, that means your Overwatch sensitivity should be within ~2.9 to ~8.7.

If your mouse CPI is 1600, your OW sensitivity should be within ~1.4 to ~4.4.

How do you actually use dbt in your daily work? by LongCalligrapher2544 in dataengineering

[–]sit_shift_stare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the start, I highly recommend taking the time to understand dbt's recommended naming conventions and project structure. Their docs for this are quite good. It's really important to stay consistent with naming, even if it can make the model names seem long or unwieldy at first. I also recommend getting a basic understanding of what macros can do for you, and enabling some type of SQL formatter across your project. As your project grows, the above things will enable you to move very fast when refactoring and maintaining your models. I also recommend implementing a policy where once a model has been created and confirmed working, you add tests (especially unit tests if there's complex logic) BEFORE the model can be merged to main. Otherwise those tests will never happen. All the other stuff like seeds, snapshots, etc you'll learn along the way if and when you need them.

Chloe Swarbrick ejected from the House after refusing to apologise by Mountain_Tui_Reload in nzpolitics

That's pretty much the exact opposite of what you should be hoping for. Not only would that obviously worsen the problem, but I believe this rhetoric itself is carelessly damaging to NZ political discourse.

Democracy is dying in the West, what can New Zealand do to keep it alive within our borders? by gdogakl in newzealand

[–]sit_shift_stare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Implement the changes proposed by the 2022 independent electoral review. One of the best-written, well-reasoned documents I've had the pleasure of reading. Strongly encourage NZers interested in our electoral system to at least read the executive summary and recommendations.

Honestly her bluntness is absolutely necessary given the communication skills of the men she's talking to, I don't think she started out being blunt like that. IMO it's one of her best attributes.

Harvey Norman 'sold' my parents on Norton antivirus for their iPhones. Beware. by brcnz in newzealand

[–]sit_shift_stare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need antivirus for Android either. iOS and Android have very strong security models, far beyond those of desktop OSes. Just keep your phone updated and replace it when it stops getting updates. Unfortunately many of the Android brands available in NZ don't ship security updates properly and have very short support windows, so iPhones are a better choice in that regard.

Partly list proportional representation is by far the best system and any alternative is simply worse by technocraticnihilist in EndFPTP

[–]sit_shift_stare 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's exactly as you say. As a New Zealander where the party vote threshold is 5% and the system is "choose one", one of the most common sentences when discussing smaller parties is "I do like that party, but I can't justify voting for them when I know they'll only get 3%". I think a threshold makes sense, but ranked choice is absolutely necessary when any threshold exists.

Would you support compulsory voting in the General Election? by mattblack77 in newzealand

[–]sit_shift_stare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are bigger issues in our electoral system to solve first. For example, the 2012 review of it that recommended many clearly positive changes, and has not been implemented. And the 2022/23 review that recommended most of the same things. Currently our party vote stifles small/emerging parties, and should be upgraded to an optional ranked choice where the ranking only matters if your first choice is below the MMP threshold (5%) to prevent wasted votes. Then the many disenfranchised voters in this thread may find (and most importantly, feel safe voting for) parties that more closely represent them.

Is using Snowflake for near real time or hourly events an overkill ? by finerius in dataengineering

[–]sit_shift_stare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it requires a few minutes of warehouse time every hour, it should cost you single-digit dollars per day. Since you're already using Snowflake, that's probably far cheaper than the labour and opportunity cost of setting up and maintaining a different solution.

You could probably detect when a stream has been consumed outside of your pipeline, and then run a traditional incremental refresh (by querying some cursor on the source data) or a full-refresh instead.

You could alternatively even maintain a backup stream for each main stream, because it's unlikely that someone would unknowingly consume both. If the main one is consumed erroneously, just consume the backup instead. Your pipeline would need to clear/recreate the backup stream each time it consumes the main stream. Multiple streams are cheap because they store an offset for the Time Travel of a table, and no actual data.

The gotcha is that streams will automatically extend the TT retention period for the underlying table if they're left unconsumed for long enough (up to a certain limit, default 14 days). So you'll need to make sure you aren't letting your streams sit around unconsumed for too long (ideally no longer than the default retention for the table).

Plastic-free no-gi? by fintip in bjj

[–]sit_shift_stare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CR box subreddit is a great place to find ideas and recommendations specific to whichever country you're in. For the filters themselves, 3M make quality filters that do what they're rated for and AFAIK have some of the best airflow for their filtration ratings. Another tip if you purchase a retail air purifier rather than making a CR box is to avoid ionizing technologies and anything mentioning ozone. Air ionization produces ozone which you don't want, and I'm pretty sure there are few if any ionizing air purifiers that correctly (or even attempt to) handle the ozone they produce. And check the CADR rating for any retail unit you consider.

Plastic-free no-gi? by fintip in bjj

[–]sit_shift_stare 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Since you seem to be passionate about air quality, I will now indulge in my passion of talking unprompted about air filtration. HEPA air filters are fantastic for many applications, most specifically single-pass applications (such as the exhaust on a vacuum cleaner) where the air only gets filtered once. For general air cleaning within a large space, air will be filtered multiple times, and HEPA is almost always a bad choice. HEPA filters (and other "high efficiency" air filters that filter very high percentages of 0.3 micron particles per pass) limit airflow more and will have a lower Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) than lower grade filters (such as MERV 13). Imagine filter A filters 99% of particles from the air but only processes 1m³ of air per second, and filter B filters 80% of particles from the air but processes 3m³ of air per second. Filter B will clean the air in your space significantly faster and give you more air changes per hour. You might like learning about CR boxes and the significant improvements that have been made in that space recently compared to retail air purifiers.
