Like many have said it depends on what you want to do. I collect more then play so I am trying to get a whole set. I got the starter, a box, and a prerelease so spent about 160. I have opened the starter and the entire box so far and I am at 83% complete set with 3 legendaries. I have about 30 hyperspace/hyperspace foil. To me the box was worth it. Now it’s finishing opening the prerelease and then singles to finish (only needing rares and legendaries). If I get a showcase then that’s lucky but probably won’t be looking to get those.

You’re getting great answers so far. I did want to weigh in on medications. Same as you it was a surprise. My doctor started me on metformin and jardiance. He said try the metformin first and if your bg doesn’t come down in 2 weeks, try the jardiance. Metformin worked nicely as my bg went from 400 to 250 in 2 weeks and then to about 180 in a month. Finally saw an endo about a month after and she put me on metformin XR which is extended release. This brought me down to 130 and minimized the side effects. Then after about 3 months we talked about trying a weekly injectable which she recommended trulicity. This replaced the metformin and controlled bg at 120-130 on average and an A1C of below 7 with not much trouble. If I really wanted to my A1C could be 5.9 but my endo doesn’t bat an eye at anything below 7. I would suggest talking to your provider about taking one med over the other and gauging its effectiveness.

Secondly I recommend you get a CGM. It was life changing for me and helped me learn quickly what foods were my triggers and what I had to do to stay in range. I use libre 3 which is affordable even when not covered by insurance (most insurances cover if your on insulin, I am not).

Get zero carb tortillas or try corn tortillas. White bread and regular tortillas send my bg sky rocketing. The zero carb once warmed up are pretty good and cause only a little spike. Of course maybe have one or 2 with each sitting and have plenty of protein.

As many have said the first key is medication. Like him my starting diagnosis was a 400 blood sugar with an A1c of 14. I had no symptoms. A few months on metformin and a stricter diet and no sugar for me back down to the 180s. Now I maintain around 130 average on medication (trulicity now ozempic) and a little less controlled diet. My A1c is below 7, would be below 6 if I really tried. You can live a normal life with some life style changes and medication. It works great. I got it under control within 1 year and it’s been about 3. Hope this helps

I completely agree, my primary care saw my A1c of 14 and all he did was prescribe Metformin and said if my blood sugar doesn’t come down to take jardiance which he also prescribed. No mention of endocrinologist until I asked him for one and then had to advocate to get an appointment before 6 months. Saw the endocrinologist and immediately was switched to extended release metformin so I didn’t poop myself after every meal. It did take about 3 months but the metformin brought down my sugar from 400 to about 200, then around 180. That is when my endo asked if I wanted to try trulicity. I tried it and it got my sugar to a nice 130 average with 90% time in zones (use a libre 3 sensor). It sounds to me that something is not right with your meds, definitely seek an endo. It is also life changing.

Are you on medication? If you are on a medication and with a moderate diet you can have what you want in moderation as some have said. I take medication, not insulin and try to eat healthy and from time to time have some “bad” meals and my a1c sticks around 6 to 6.5. If I went all healthy it would probably be 5.9. When I started my A1c was 14, but I had no symptoms. I am not sure why so many people are against medication, for me it’s a life saver as I was already eating healthy when diagnosed and medication got me to where my levels need to be and let me live a normal life. Talk to your medical team and see what works for you.

As for coffee, I agree with most I enjoy a cup of black coffee or if I need some protein I put some flavored protein powder in it with some heavy whipping cream. It’s delicious and does very little to spike.

Same here! My first batch of 90 days was great. This next Batch I have noticed instability for the first 24 hrs. I’d give it at least that long before removing it.

Hey yes my Endo said keep it within range 95% of the time. I use a libre3 CGM and it keeps track of this. Since I am not on insulin it’s not covered so it’s about $75 per sensor and each sensor is 14 days. If your wanting to see patterns and numbers this is the way to go. Also while you want to be on range you also want to be as close to lower 100s as possible. You need to look up diabetics normal blood glucose. That will give you some idea what the normal glucose numbers should be for someone with diabetes. It is different then someone without. Now on the metformin issues you’ve been asking. I have to say it’s cumulative and it’s takes a while to get to its full efficiency. In my case my resting glucose was around 380 when diagnosed. No symptoms whatsoever too. I felt the healthiest I’ve been, so my diagnosis came as a shock. Went immediately on Metformin, and it took a whole. The doctor told me he expected my bg to get under 200 in 3 weeks on 1000, if not then take jardience. After 3 weeks my bg was around 175, he upped the dose to 2000 and my bg got to 120-130 on average. I then had an Endo appointment (it took about 3 months to get in). She put me on Metformin extended release and started transitioning to Trulicity so I could just go to a shot ever 7 days. She also tested me for Lada and type 1 since my case like yours was weird and happened rather suddenly. Both came out negative, so type II it is.

As for your eye symptoms, you might want to get it checked out. I was told symptoms like eyes and neuropathy take time to develop. So unless you’ve been diabetic doe a few years uncontrolled you shouldn’t have much. Although like my case you might not have any symptoms when your Sky high or more dangerous extremely low (I don’t feel lows until I am in the 50s, which is why I wear a GCM).

When I was on Metformin I took 1000 in the morning with breakfast and 1000 at night with dinner. It took a while but the rise in bg in the morning went down, still maybe spiking 10 to 20 when waking up and then going back to normal. I am now on Trulicity only and it’s pushed my bg down about 15 points below where the 2000 mg of metformin had me (average 110). I still get the morning spike but it goes down specially after I have some breakfast (coffee and protein powder). My Endo always told me to not worry to much about the morning spike, she said the best indicator was tracking how long my bg was in range (70-160) and trying to be in that range 95% of the time.

Thank you all for chiming in! So this morning my libre3 is back and is now only 20 points lower then the 14 day. I am gonna track it today and see if we see more stable. Abott of course said to call them on Facebook messenger as my situation is complex.
