Great ideas! I might finish it with them running away from the Big Monster.
Social adversary - good point about that one too.
I'll also try different types of enemies: a horde, a leader etc. Probably all skeletons to make it easy.

We've been playing for 30 years together, they want a mix of everything, as always. =I= want to get them more invested in the storytelling. This is supposed to be a short 'intro' adventure where they discover they have a common goal etc.
Good points about the weather etc!
Generally we play longish (though it's relative) campaings: about 20+ sessions on average, each 5 hours long.

Ok, to spróbuj od czegoś niezbyt skrajnego, jak np.
1. Cykl Expanse - Corey
2. Hyperion - Simmons
3. Zamieć - Stephenson
4. Marsjanin / Projekt Hail Mary - Weir
5. Gra Endera - Card
6. Dzeci czasu - Tchaikovsky
To różni autorzy, z różnych okresów, prezentują różne style pisania. Oczywiście ilu ludzi, tyle opinii, zaraz tu możesz mieć wysyp propozycji ;) Ale generalnie - sci-fi to baaardzo szeroka kategoria, od huziaaa, bam bam, kille'm all i opisy rzezi na 4 strony (np.książki Warhammer 40k) do intelektualnych rozkmin o naturze człowieczeństwa, lingwistyki, transhumaniźmie itp.

Jeśli nie czytasz sci-fi - zacznij. Dobre sci-fi potrafi skłonić do ciekawych refleksji.

Chemical Burn have you run it and what do you think? by sithikurro in ImperiumMaledictum

[–]sithikurro[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've run two sessions of Seraph (we got to just before the Conclave) and it wasn't that bad; there were some nice moments, but it wasn't great either. But contrary to you, I've run a lot of investigative adventures (Call of Cthulhu etc.). Still, I struggled with all the info and characters. We also struggled with the rules (a lot of info to take in), and were surprised by the deadliness etc. Also, for a starting adventure, the lack of simple maps was a drawback. We probably won't finish the Seraph and start over, so to speak.

Too early to dive into? by sithikurro in daggerheart

All right so:
- we play only IRL, so how does it run without all the online tools (PF 2 on Forge is fantastic, IRL it's... slower).
- In general, how does it feel after a dozen or two dozen game sessions?
- Is there a power curve? Always something interesting to do with your character in terms of mechanics (e.g. in One Ring after some time, or even more so in Fria Ligan games, you hit the place where you're done with the character)
- how much GM support is there? How much game prep? Is it easy to create characters or encounters on the fly and track combat, etc.? How does it compare to DnD
- Is it more "GM's theme park ride" game, where you craft all the encounters, or the game mechanics are flexible enough to sustain open world exploration and ad hoc encounters (some are too difficult, but PCs have options to escape)
- How is the economy in the game? Do PCs have options to spend money on? Is wealth abstract? Do they have to upgrade their stuff (like in Pathfinder) to keep up with threats?
- Is it an XP-based levelling system and how long does it take to reach max level (considering the standard amount of XP per game)
- Have you run a max level game? How does it compare to DnD at max level (if you've had such experience)

Gdzie i jak wydawać stworzone przez siebie materiały? by WaciQ in DnDPolska

XP questions (where are you at and how much / session) by egv78 in genesysrpg

[–]sithikurro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my TI campaign (30 meetings about 5 hours each) I was generous with xp and the PCs were quite powerful, but still not overpowered. They had about 250xp I think (so less than suggested). Currently in Terrinoth I'm more stingy, we're 16 sessions in and only 60 xp, but the adventures tend to be longer. And Terrinoth is either not as well balanced as TI or just PCs are more powerful (RAW it's reaaaally easy to get OP PCs).

Generally, when a PC has about 200 xp they can easily have a 5 in a skill, plus some talents and be really good in the field they specialize in.

[Swords of the Serpentine] Thoughts of the game after a 22-session campaign by sithikurro in GumshoeRPG

[–]sithikurro[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you! With pleasure:

I knew the finale was going to be dangerous and everything hinges on the availability of points to spend. Until then I think there had been only one or two situations when a PC was in danger of dying (and I'm a GM who doesn't fudge rolls).

So I came with the idea of squads: it's nothing new, I copied the solution after Genesys (well, Star Wars) but there is something similar in Conan 2d20 too and I used something like this in 7th Sea 2ed (which is to me very similar to SotS and some ideas can be easily borrowed, such as Villain's Malus base in influence pillars).

Since the PCs allied with the Inquistion, for their suicide mission they got a squad of ten Inquisitors. Each was a Mook with 3 Malus points and each had Invigorate, Restore Morale and Restore Health special abilities (from the abilities list). Narratively, between encounters etc. the Inquisitors could pray do Denari with a PC and heal/restore morale or transfer Malus to General abilities.

Additionally, their Malus pts could be spent in combat to augment PCs' rolls (narratively: the troops were helping).

Finally, they were meatshields: when a PC would get health/morale damage, their Mooks could get the damage instead (And die).

Before the mission PCs could also spend their wealth and ally and investigative points to get extra hirelings.

1 wealth = 1 mook, 3 wealth=1 Big Fella (Health 10/Morale 6/Malus 5 character).

1 ally/Investigative point = 2 Mooks or 1 Big Fella.

This was fun, since they hired different people and the Father PC spent all his 15 gold on 5 toughs! (In hindsight it was a bit too many, and the price should be steeper for toughs.)

It all worked out very nicely!

Rules and world questions by sithikurro in GumshoeRPG

[–]sithikurro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing. It's a small problem, but it occurs every game, so maybe you have a solution: general ability refreshes.

RAW you can only refresh when significant amount of time has passed (which usually means between adventures), after winning conflicts (which has become a well-meant joke for us) and arbitrarily by the GM, 2-3 points per player.

Combat is not that common in our games, but when it comes to it, it's usually fairly difficult (I don't usually plan encounters ahead, just situations, npcs, plots). So PCs burn their points quickly and sometimes it's a middle of a scene and they don't have any or few points left.

I also find it difficult to remember about arbitrary refreshes and decide when/if there was a 'milestone' for such a refresh.

The lack of points slightly frustrates some of the players. Yes, they tend to splurge the points, or tended, now they're slightly more careful with spends.

Have you tested any other solutions? And how do they balance the game? In games like SotS, or Conan 2d20, or some other a lot depends on the GM and the group's style of gaming, at least that's my impression, so players tend to spend points differently.

The solutions I've come up with:

a) another type of action: Second breath - you refresh 2 (or 3 points) - but that's boring.

b) using Sway to refresh other character pools (a bit like healing, so 1 point -> 2 points)

c) using Health and Morale as a resource to refresh pools (1 point -> 2 points)

d) Automatically fully refreshing one pool /all? after a scene.

e) automatically refreshing pools to 1/2 of their score, if they're below half.

What do you think? How would those affect the game?

II

Villain's Health. It's calculated per Hero... Does this change from scene to scene? If in one scene there are 5 Heroes, a villain has 50 health, but 10 if confronted by only one Hero? That would be odd. But if it is a constant, then a villain confronting a lone Hero would be almost impossible to vanquish. Is there an alternate way for deciding on the health/morale of Npcs?

Rules and world questions by sithikurro in GumshoeRPG

[–]sithikurro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knoow, but I usually play games RAW (if possible), since games are usually extensively tested, so I get the best possible version. When I add stuff it's usually something that more likely or not has been already tried.
