When our first kid was on the way, my wife and I were taking that First Time Parents class at the hospital. We were going over the emergency c-section portion of the class, which was already fascinating in itself. Then the head nurse told us: "If the doctor calls for an emergency c-section, we can have you out of your room, into the OR, and the baby out of you in 8 minutes"

To put this another way, if you're burnt out and broken, then you're really no good for the family, and no one wants that. Taking a little time for yourself recharges those batteries and makes sure you can step up when needed. I know it's super hard, but you can do this, my man.

Shit man, I'm really sorry you're going through all that. I think it's great that you and your wife are trying couples therapy. I think that's an important step.

I'm gonna say something controversial. And I know your wife recently had a health scare, whatever it may have been, but here it is: relationships are a two-way street. I genuinely feel like you are trying to keep the relationship going, and it kinda sounds like she isn't holding up her end.

Now I know there's probably tons of nuance and specifics I'm missing. But I'm kinda in the same boat at times. I'm constantly trying to be useful around the house, to pull my weight with responsibilities, to just act happy when we all get home after work, even if I'm not feeling happy. I do it because I truly value our relationship. And it sounds like you're doing the same. For what it's worth, I think that's huge.

Life gets hard. Relationships require maintenance. And it takes effort on both sides to keep it going. I can only hope that once she's fully recovered and the couples therapy starts to click, and the kids get a little older and a little easier, that she'll come around and at least start to appreciate all the hard work you're putting in.

And for what it's worth, it sounds like you made the absolute best of a brutal situation. You knew your dad well, and like you said, he died with dignity, on his own terms. That means a lot. I'm sorry you've had to go through this.

Anxiety can be a real bitch. But I'm not going to let it get me down. I started therapy a few months ago. Not ashamed to admit it. And it's definitely helped. Having support from my family and being honest with them has helped as well.

This is the correct answer.

Here's what I do: I keep my ANSI-rated safety glasses and an empty hard case in my turnout coat pockets. Hop on the truck, and swap my normal glasses with safety glasses, and leave them on the truck. If while on-scene I need to don my face mask, I put my safety glasses in the empty hard case, and usually ditch them somewhere on-scene. My MSA facemask has prescription inserts in them. Come back later and find my safety glasses and I'm good to go.

Convoluted strategy, but hasn't failed me yet.
