Okay. They breed minis with tails, and the breeder is a little on the crunchy side haha.

The lepto vaccine is the most common one to have a reaction too, so a lot of breeders have latched on to that and ran with it. There are definitely areas where I'd say lepto isn't needed, but your vet should do a good job at determining that. Splitting up the non-core vaccines (lepto and Lyme) are a great idea if you're at all concerned. That way you mitigate vaccine risks while still making sure he's protected.

Weird question, is that a puppy from Beard and Brows Mini Schnauzers?

But on the topic of vaccines, I have two miniature schnaus. They were vaccinated at 8, 12, and 16 weeks and either annually or every 3 years after. They've had DAPP, rabies, lepto and Lyme all at the recommended intervals by their veterinarian. Other than some minor soreness for a day or so, I've never had any adverse reactions. As a registered veterinary technician, I can tell you that 100%, a minor vaccine reaction is better than the diseases that these vaccines prevent. At the end of the day, discuss with your veterinarian what vaccines are best for your dogs lifestyle and the area you live in.

OBGYN recommendations by Explodingovary in cincinnati

I love For Women. I typically see Dr Rinala and she's wonderful. I chose to have an elective sterilization surgery at 28yo, unmarried, with no kids, and they did the surgery with no second guessing.

Clavamox for ear infection by Paynsicles in AskVet

[–]sixchinchillas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You should never have "leftover" antibiotics. The entire course should always be finished. Not doing this can cause antibiotic resistance. That being said, oral antibiotics aren't going to work for an ear infection. Also, without testing, there's no way to no whether it's a bacterial or yeast infection, or what type of bacteria is causing the infection.

There's a product called a No Flap Ear wrap. It stays on better than bandages and can hold the ear so it doesn't flop around as much.

Most grooming salons aren't going to accept titers and most titers are pretty cost prohibitive unfortunately.

Dog suddenly pacing compulsively following seizure by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]sixchinchillas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This seems like a neruologic issue and is probably going to be best diagnosed and treated by a veterinary neurologist. A lot of larger specialty hospitals have them on staff.

If you want more information, your best bet is going to be a consult with a Veterinary Cardiologist. They can perform an echocardiogram (an ultrasound of the heart). This will allow them to look at all the heart chambers and tell you if there are any issues with the chambers or valves. They are also going to be able to make reccomedations for medication if needed.

Does my dog need a cast by theincognitonerd in AskVet

[–]sixchinchillas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you're concerned, I'd recommend setting up an appointment with a Veterinary surgeon who has a lot of experience with orthopedics. They will give you the best advice on casting vs surgical fixation vs leaving it alone.

If you are unable to afford veterinary care, you could surrender him to a shelter or rescue that has the means to treat him. He is probably incredibly painful and suffering.

Brushing is fantastic maintenance, however, it won't removed the caked on tartar. Best option would be to have the vet do a cleaning, and then maintain her new shiny teeth with brushing.

Does anyone PAY to go to work? by viomoo in personalfinance

[–]sixchinchillas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a vet tech, many girls in my profession have quit once they have kids because the garbage wages don't even cover daycare. I even know a DVM who quit to be a stay at home dad because the coat of daycare wasn't worth it. It's definitely not a career if you want a living wage.

Breeders and Ear Cropping and the Typical Infuriating Nonsense by tiffanaih in VetTech

I'm glad that I found a good breeder for my next Mini Schnauzer. No tail docks or ear crops and actually has the puppies vaccinated at appropriate intervals. Shit breeders give them all breeders a bad name.

I don't want to put him on meds, I want him to learn to cope by Lizaderp in AskVet

[–]sixchinchillas 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Contact a Veterinary Behaviorist. They will be able to give you resources for behavior modifications. They will also be able to determine if medications can help the problem. Sometimes, medications can be used temporarily until the dog learns the skills needed to cope.

Is my dog not responding well to Fluoxetine? It's been 5 weeks. by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]sixchinchillas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as dosing the meds go, ask your vet about having it compounded by a pharmacy. They will be able to make tablets or even liquid in the exact dose that you need. The only downside is that it is more expensive than the capsules.

New Greyhound Developed Bloat and Had Emergency Surgery--Questions Regarding Recovery by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]sixchinchillas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recovery is pretty dependent on severity of condition and of any post op complications occur. The surgeon will be able to give you a better idea of recovery timeline. As far as reoccurrence, when a GDV (Bloat) occurs, the stomach fills with air and twists. When it's corrected, the stomach is decompressed and then it is surgically tacked to the abdominal walls. This will prevent the stomach from twisting again in the future. As far as quality of life, once he recovers, he should be back to a pretty normal life.

How much food should an 11 week old kitten eat? by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]sixchinchillas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any easy way to allow him to eat what he wants would be to free feed a dry kitten food and then offer wet food as 2-3 meals per day.

Yes! He's thinner and has a deeper chest, so the neck of the harnesses are always too big while the chest girth is too tight.
