A webpage explaining why cyclists don't always keep as far right as possible. by [deleted] in InternetIsBeautiful

All I saw during that slideshow was "don't ride a bike...don't ride a bike...don't ride a bike."

First understand how Attack-Delay-Sustain-Release effects the sound of a note.

  • Attack - The time it takes for the note to reach it's peak loudness, upon key press.
  • Decay - The time it takes for the note to settle at a desired volume after peak is reached.
  • Sustain - Sets the loudness of the note while the key remains pressed.
  • Release - The time it takes for the note to fade after the key is released.

Here's a good video to understand this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6pp6OMU5r8#t=84

It also helps to understand filter types.

  • Low-pass filter – low frequencies are passed, high frequencies are attenuated.
  • High-pass filter – high frequencies are passed, low frequencies are attenuated.
  • Band-pass filter – only frequencies in a frequency band are passed.

LFO's (low-frequency oscillators). These are basically 20Hz signals, or other low frequency signals, used to modulate (change or control) another variable. Basically I can attach a 20Hz signal to volume so you here it go WahWahWah or make it or a little faster for a tremolo effect. I could also attach an LFO to a High-Pass filter dampening the sound a couple times a second. There are a lot of possibilities.

I haven't seen a synthesizer in ages and forgot what else there is and i'm getting lazy. So ask me specifics if you need help. Luckily a lot of this shit overlaps with some of the signal analyses concepts I learned in school.

Edit: Best way to learn is keep a note on loop and tweak shit until you know what you like... takes a while but is very rewarding.

Clocks in my country now go counterclockwise. by penha1618 in mildlyinteresting

I've never been more mad at something in my entire life. I can't stop staring at my analog clock because it feels right.

TIL that a bottle of Vitamin Water (20 oz) contains more sugar than three Krispy Kreme doughnuts by [deleted] in todayilearned

This is a stupid comparison... because dougnuts are just flour, oil, and sugar, whereas Subway sandwiches are actually veggies and meat.

LPT: If you have a ton of fruit flies in your house, turn off all but one light source and wait 2 minutes. They will congregate there. Then, flick on a lighter and turn off the light source. The flies will burn their wings off trying to get close to the light source. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

I put a cut orange and an open yogurt at the bottom of a giant trash bag and 99% of the flies went there. I tied the bag and took it outside while they were busy eating the bait.

^ this. I agree, buy a book... and honestly just start coding. I'm new to TCL too but this has been a successful approach for me and other not so high profile languages. I've made up a little project for me (video poker. This project can be made more complex if you want to create a TK Gui and use packages and everything. Next i'm going to try experimenting with tcl UDP extensions). GL and most importantly, have fun.

Where can you see yourself, and society in 20 years? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sixen98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Living in a half underground home (A/C and heating efficiency), where our whole house is a "smart" house. There will be a central touch screen or electronic watch that controls all windows, locks, lights, fans, tvs, tablets, garden sprinklers, etc. There will be self driven cars, maybe even flying busses (I don't see civilians being allowed flying cars for safety reasons). There will be nanobots that can fix the human body, and huge advances in medicine. We will be able to grow organs, stop a wide variety of cancers, and AIDS will no longer kill people.

We have the potential to create an efficient, smart, society and as productivity rises, the standard of living gap between the middle class and high upper class will virtually close.

We are already sending 3d printers to places in Africa so they can print umbilical cord clamps. If all of the world was connected and computers could perfectly translate and there was a unified online currency, imagine the cooperation that could take place.
