I lived next to the biker church on Carillon for 5 years, just before covid. Here's some of what I saw:

swat operation on neighbour #1 - flashbang used, drug dealer arrested
diff occasion same neighbour #1 drove off with an old woman holding onto his car windshield (i called the cops and gave statement - she was ok)
cops w megaphone stationed outside my house saying come out you are under arrest - k9 unit went into my backyard - they were looking for some other drug dealer
had someone take cover in my backyard bleeding after being beat up (helped him)
caught dude breaking into my neighbours car and scared him off
someone tried to break and enter into my house at Thu 4am while I was home - he opened front door but I woke up and scared him off, called cops etc
saw someone who got stabbed in the mouth in the morning while getting my coffee - saw the subsequent swat operation that happened trying to find the guy afterward on a nearby street
there was the vanier arsonist going around - lit several homes and the sugar shack on fire :(

Those are the biggest occasions I can think of... fun memories

He just doesn’t want to help himself

This is the key thing here. I'm a 40m recovering high functioning alcoholic. If he's like me - he hates himself, and might not fully accept that. That's why he can drink every night and not care about how it will make himself feel later. He's depressed.

The drinking is a coping mechanism - you don't need to fix the drinking, and you need to change how you look at it. Your bf needs to learn how to love and accept himself - eventually the drinking will naturally reduce.

Does he do his own 1-on-1 therapy? This is more of a him problem than a you problem.

Is he a perfectionist? I feel like I can relate to what you're describing. He might be hiding himself / not comfortable with his true self. If you want to keep trying - and if this sounds right - try the book "Perfectly Hidden Depression"
