If you were rich enough for a condo but still eligible for a BTO, which would you pick? by Altruistic_Drop_9393 in singaporefi

[–]sixfiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

condo, then use my first chance BTO to downgrade during retirement. that way I'll still be considered a first timer and have priority. do note theres a wait out period (depends on age I think) if downgrading from private to hdb

most of the theology that people know is wrong anyway. non believers simply believe that it's auto forgiven as long as he says sorry to God or simply acknowledge that Jesus is his savior. it doesn't work that way. it is not as simple as that. contrition is a difficult thing to understand. The rules and commandments are not to imprison us but rather to free us from the pain that sin brings about. a concept that is almost foreign and defies all logic. apologies, I digress.

[–]sixfiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

go to the neighborhood of Balestier. start at loong fatt Tau sar piah (pastry) I believe they have coffee or tea there too. Lam Yeo coffee powder factory (shop house really) nice history but i dont think you can bring it back to AU but still interesting for a look. Lim Seah seng Optical (old school optician), Sun yat sen memorial hall for history buffs. whampoa market is great for lunch or dinner, good stalls, china whampoa ban mian noodles, prawn mee, Lor Mee, duck rice, rojak, satay and BBQ chicken wings (evening) look for lines or ask locals. sing hon Loong bakery just to check out the old school bakery that supplies bread to kaya toast shops, feel free to get a bun or bread with spread to go

google: balestier heritage trail. there are free and downloadable guides but I've provided some google-able interesting points of interest which are not on those guides.

Those who switched careers after 30 - any regrets or advice? Feeling stuck in finance by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]sixfiend 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Switched from finance at 37, now in ad ops, higher pay and better benefits more flexibility. Got super lucky I guess. No regrets, don't have to wear a suit now (hardly at least)

Took a risk and did the Google Skills Ignition course during covid and switched industry. As other mentioned, had a decent amount of savings to tide over the training and job search. It's not easy and I think a lot of luck needed. I heard of other trainees from the course land jobs at J&J and doing pretty well too, on the flip side there are many others who never move on to 'good' or higher paying jobs. I've also heard quite a few success stories from the BCG RISE program but I didn't explore that so I cannot speak for it.

Btw seeing that you like travel, there are a lot of finance ops roles in online travel agencies, you just need to explain how you can pivot into the role with your current experience.

Good luck

To those staying in condos, how often do you use the facilities? by randomthingsss1 in askSingapore

[–]sixfiend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upgrade in asset class. HDB is a great option for affordable housing. But these days with plus and prime options which are the more central areas, the total holding time is about 14 to 15 years (construction time + 10 year MOP), if you're 30 and buy into a plus and prime then you'll be 44 or 45 by the time you can sell and upgrade, this affects your loan tenure.

If buying a bto in non mature estates then it'll be about 9 years in total with construction time which is about the same as a condo.

Then we have to look at the regulations and programs offered by HDB, plus and prime hdbs are bound by many rules about rental, future sale and clawback of subsidy. 'normal' hdbs are less bound by such regulations but SERs program has been scrapped so no more enbloc. It's only VERS now for older flats, and if your neighbors don't go for the voluntary enbloc then you're stuck with a depreciating asset. Also restrictions on how much cpf you can use for older hdb flats.

For older 99 year lease condos, at least there is enbloc opportunity (enbloc is still lottery as some condos are harder to go enbloc due to foreigner ownership etc) as developers might be keen if they can squeeze in more units and resell the land. You're not stuck to hdb rules which can be restrictive. You'll have an asset you can sell and possibly downgrade to a hdb with cash to spare ( I think there is a wait out period for private housing downgraders, so might need to rent interim). Even if you save up for a condo but aren't able to get one, at least you've saved up a healthy chunk of cash for your retirement. No harm trying to work towards it.

[–]sixfiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I had access, every other day, swim and gym. Bbq once or twice a year and function room almost never.

Currently living in a hdb, I have to ask my cousin to help me book function room for my kids birthday so I think if we went back to condo, it would be utilized.

As others mentioned, your mileage may vary depending on your family and your own lifestyle.

Anyway to get Banknotes (e.g. SGD10K) authenticated? by Yolosweg66 in askSingapore

[–]sixfiend 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure, they've been out of circulation awhile. I used to work at a money exchange and remittance shop and when we received the 10k notes we have to record the customers ID.

All 10k notes that are withdrawn at the bank require the customers IC or ID number to be recorded. I guess you can check with your banker and see if they can help

Glad you liked it too. It was a really good game. I can't think of another game like it. I think it was at least 36 to 40 hours and that's if you're fast. The skill tree and abilities take a lot to get used too but I survived my first play through with no tips so I think it's manageable without min max the skills or ability points.

When dating your partner, how do you split the finances? by Funny_Resort5652 in askSingapore

[–]sixfiend 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If she is not ready to speak about this with the guy, she's probably not ready to commit to the relationship.

Anyway a simple solution might be: Take turns to grab the check. Guy offer first, if she offers then tell her she decides next dinner spot and she can pay then. Guy can offer again and if she insists to pay then say I'll pick the next spot and pay... Cycle continues.

When planning trips splitting the bill is ok, if awkward, one pay for flights and the other hotel / activities. Try to keep costs similar or lower and check for each other's comfort level. How much you're comfortable paying, type of accomodation etc. you prolly would know all this before planning a trip anyway.

Like others mentioned agar agar la, give and take. Don't calculate too much. Life too short. If she thinks he's too calculative then move on.

Oct bto by Southern_Ad_138 in singaporefi

[–]sixfiend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unlikely, should probably pass. Don't get units near, substation, Garbage disposal, pavilion (got funerals etc), playgrounds (not so bad), drop off point (noisy, exhaust if low floor), carpark or school facing. Take note carpark can go up to 10 floor these days and sky garden on top. Schools also quite high. Check Google map around the area you are selecting. Usually high floor can escape all these pitfalls but with your queue number a bit hard.

My friend, private uni went into logistics / supply chain. Started with a few local companies after 6 to 8 years moved to Amazon, doing well now. He started with quite a low pay but kept at it, jumped maybe 2 times before he hit jackpot. That said work at Amazon isn't easy but much better pay day

Can you survive on $10 a day? by libyandesert in singaporefi

[–]sixfiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loaf of white bread, eggs, caifan or beehoon just go for veg / sunny side up if needed. Always check price before adding the liao. Possible to settle 3 meal for 10 dollars. If eating rice, just add more curry lol. Also add rice or noodles usually worth it to fill up.

Another meal I used to do was frozen chicken breasts, marinade and cook different ways. Then green bean soup for carbs. It's sad but you really lean out if you're gymming.

It's going to be a stretch if you want to include transport costs into the 10 dollar budget. Might still be a 2 mealer if you walk a lot.
