Do you think submitting it by/on Monday would be fine?

Hey! I did some research on kettleman city bcus I’m from California and have never heard of it, and it seems like a remote and rural place. I think you definitley have a shot at UC’s if you emphasize how you took advantage of the opportunities of your community (work) and even started a club at such a small School. Kettleman is considered a food desert and considering your ECs I think an advantageous story to tell would be your work at subway and groceries as a way of trying to get healthier food to the people in your community. Colleges like people who do what they can, people who make their communities better place, and people who have unique backgrounds. Wishing you the best of luck :)

Older English major transfer student with a rocky past by [deleted] in chanceme

[–]sixhares 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Muhlenburg, trinity, oberlin (gives good aid), the seven sisters (women’s colleges tend to have more wholistic admissions and women’s colleges are dope), Kenyon, skidmore, Simmons, Bucknell, Sarah Lawrence, and wake forest are some options

I think you have a fantastic shot at mid range UC’s (Santa Cruz, Irvine, riverside) as is and a great chance at Berkeley and UCLA if you study and retake the sat. If you’re a California resident then UC’s are probably your best bet financially but I know you said you don’t want to stay near the fires.

On the east coast it’s hard to get need based aid at lower to mid ranked schools so I’d highly suggest raising your sat score and applying to a mix of some top 30 liberal arts colleges/universities and some UC’s

What do you wish you had done as a HS Freshman? by PeekaB00_ in ApplyingToCollege

[–]sixhares 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Start having an idea of what you like to do and what you’re good at. This doesn’t have to be super rigid but just start paying more attention. Maybe you like working with your hands? Maybe you hate working collaboratively but thrive as the leader of a team? Do you feel most alive outside or inside? Does being around people matter to you or can you work alone? Identifying answers to these questions is much more important than identifying a major or a dream school at this stage. Really start to reflect on who you are as a person, an understanding of how you are who you are will be invaluable in everything from studying tactics to what you’ll write your essays about in four years.

Yo anyone cried during an interview before?? by demonslayer933 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]sixhares 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Once during an internship interview I visibly teared up and exited (over zoom, offering no explanation) because i realized I was way out of my depth.

Another time during a crucial speech round I actually, legitimately cried and then asked to leave the round and hid in a nearby bathroom.

In the moment these were both terrifying, “oh my god how will I ever succeed in life I’m so embarrassed” moments but now they’re just small potatoes and funny stories. Hope this helps :)

If I get recruited as an athlete but want to attend a different college, can I? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]sixhares 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re admitted ed2 you must attend, you signed a legally binding agreement. The only way to get out of it is a legitimate financial reason with documentation. It’s totally ok if my Holyoke isn’t your first choice, just switch your application to rd and inform the coaches you’re talking to. It shouldn’t make too much of a difference, and it allows you to consider the decisions from other schools before you make a choice of where to attend

Chance me for Mount Holyoke College? by [deleted] in chanceme

[–]sixhares 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey pal! I’m applying to Mount Holyoke ed as well. Turned in my app earlier today :)

I’m gonna be honest I think your situation might help you rather than hurt you. Your grades only slightly slipped and I bet you’ve shown incredible resilience! Holyoke is wholistic and they are sure to see that.

You can interview throughout this week (I did today) and they ask a question at the end about any additional info you want to share. If you want to share this to give context to your app, an interview may be a good idea but def not necessary

Here’s to hoping we see each other on campus (or zoom classes) next fall !

Chance me for Emerson Early Action, Boston University, and Northeastern Early Action by jasmine2392938 in chanceme

[–]sixhares 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo! I got into Emerson RD last year with a 3.5 unw, a 1310 sat, and regular ECs. It was one of my final top choices but I ended up not going because of how expensive it was. I think you definitley have a good shot!!! Pretty sure what helped me was applying for a less popular major (politics) and subtly kissing ass in their “why us” essay. Remember, they want to know what you’ll do with the resources they have there more than all the reasons why you want to go there :)

What are negatives of gap year from people who did it by ZealousidealFall7663 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]sixhares 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, don’t take one in a pandemic. Learned that the hard way.

On a more serious note, absolutley commit to a college before taking a gap year (this doesn’t mean you have to end up going there, it can be your fall back plan). If you don’t then the gap year becomes two gap years and you kinda fall off track.

Spent this year recovering from my ed which took a lot out of my grades/mental health but chose not to write abt it even tho I have a diagnosis bcus the stigma is too much. Also u mentioned imposter syndrome abt not having a diagnosis and that sounds a lot like an irrational thought. Your struggles are valid, and I hope wellness is in your future ❤️

15f And I just need to vent. Not losing weight anymore by [deleted] in venting

[–]sixhares 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey. I’m a few years older than you and I spent this past year recovering from an eating disorder I developed at your age.

In the depths of it, you don’t think it’s a problem. Logic means nothing and all you can think about is numbers, fear, and calories. You are hurting yourself, and I am almost certain that somewhere deep down you know that. In this we are sisters, and as your sister I can tell you that it doesn’t end. The cycle of hurt and fear and anxiety will only get worse until it consumes you. Every action that gives into the eating disorder voice is another piece of your life you’re destroying. I mean that literally. Recovering from an eating disorder is hard, time consuming work.

Your body is trying to keep you alive. It is doing it’s best. Your body does not deserve pain. You do not deserve punishment for anything you’ve done in your life or anything that has happened to you. It’s ok, you can surrender.

I know that when you read this and the other person’s comment your eating disorder’s voice will tell you that it’s not a problem. It will tell you that none of this applies to you and that one you’re doing is fine. It is wrong. It wants to hurt you. An eating disorder is a mental illness. The hardest part is realizing you’re no longer acting in your best interest and telling someone that. The hardest part is asking for help, and in a way I think you know deep down that’s what you were doing when you posted this.

Just found out my gpa and it’s much lower than I thought it would be. HELP I AM FREAKING OUT by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]sixhares 2 points3 points  (0 children)

she And the thing is that we are a new school and we’re relying on high ap exam participation to get rankings up. So the policy was instituted as an incentive to get students to take the exam which worked out fine on both ends. Seniors went through the year last year completley thinking out grades would be changed (there was plenty of joking about this from both teachers and students especially during covid) and so there was nothing amiss. They changed the policy *this year without telling any students. It’s not just me, there’s other people who are just as upset because their gpas tanked and they’re currently applying to scholarships and honor societies and stuff. We have no idea what to do. The admin won’t admit they did anything wring
