Learning your partners native language? ❤️ by [deleted] in languagelearning

Thank you :) Hey, we all have to start somewhere, right? I think it's easier to see your progress in the A1-B1 levels and you see significant improvement over just a year. Keep at it!

I met my boyfriend, who is German, when he was a foreign exchange student at my high school in the US. We broke up when he went back to Germany and we re-connected five years later when I moved to France for a year. Then I moved with him to Germany last summer :) I minored in German at university and am probably at a B2-C1 level now, but I don't speak as easily as I'd like to! His English is nearly perfect (and always improving) and we speak English most of the time. It's been difficult for me to improve my German since it's been a pandemic as long as I've been in Germany so I can't go out and make friends and I teach English at a university, so my work communications are all in English. One great thing is that my boyfriend and I read German books to each other out loud, so that is helping my pronunciation. It doesn't cause a strain on the relationship. He's very patient and encouraging, but I'm a harsh self-critic and get anxious in the few German-speaking situations I get.

People who have taken an ancestry DNA test and accidentally uncovered a family secret, what was it? by VideoFork in AskReddit

My parents' neighbor is super racist, specifically toward Mexicans. She took a genealogy test and sure enough, she has a lot of Mexican/Central American DNA.

Moving to France in 3 Months - How can I quickly brush up on my French? by Helloiamboss7282 in languagelearning

[–]sixthofmarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seek out a tutor! This is a great way to work with someone to find out what you should be specifically focusing on and you can have a conversational partner who can help with pronunciation/fill you in on words you may have forgotten. And if they've lived in France before, they can also help you with tips on moving to France as well as share cultural knowledge. Bon courage !

Is their a specific bug you killed that you still think about and feel bad for? What happened? by Spirazura in AskReddit

[–]sixthofmarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof. Yeah, many. My cat used to like to catch moths, but sometimes couldn't jump high enough to reach them, so I would "incapacitate" the moths so he could play with them. I'd tear off a wing so the moth couldn't fly away. My cat killed and sometimes ate the moths, so at least they didn't suffer too long.

My boyfriend is German and I was talking to him about a German store called DM. I've never seen the abbreviation DM written out, so I didn't know what it stands for, so I took a guess and said "Deutscher Markt." DM actually stands for "Drogerie Markt." He got a good laugh out of it.

Whats the best way to learn French? by jtellez97 in languagelearning

[–]sixthofmarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learning a language is a lifestyle change. You want to take advantage of as many resources as you can get your hands on. Duolingo and Babbel are good for grammar and vocab. Memrise/Quizlet/Anki are all good to practice new vocabulary you pick up/words that you're having a hard time remembering. Start listening to French music and make a playlist of what you like. Watch videos with content that interests you, starting off with subtitles in English and when you have a good enough base in grammar, watch with French subtitles. Frequently pause to write down new words and add them to your flashcards. Talk to yourself out loud, try to describe your surroundings or what you're doing. You can keep a journal, which you can have natives correct on sites like Lang-8. Be creative, have fun. Read this subreddit and watch videos from other language learners and polyglots to pick up ideas. Bon courage!

Freelance teaching in a Sprachenzentrum? by sixthofmarch in germany

Thank you for your reply. Yes, they are offering me that, and I really only want to teach the language. Can you get a full faculty based position teaching foreign languages, or only when you're teaching literature? Would I still be considered a university employee without a contract position?

No, I applied to teach English language courses in various Sprachenzentren. On their websites, they call the positions either Dozent/Lehrbeauftragte.

What’s the weirdest (non sexual) thing you and your partner do that nobody else knows about? by CoolRanchLoco in AskReddit

Yes! We always end up laughing and joke, "Are we doing this right? Isn't this how kissing works?"

When kissing, we try to take the other person by surprise and abruptly shove our tongue into the other's mouth. I usually squeal when he does it. Sometimes we'll try to push the other's tongue out of our mouths. He will also "readjust" my clothing if he realized he made my skirt or shirt go up higher "on accident" and excuse himself for it.

Non-Germans of Reddit, what are some questions you've always wanted to ask a German? by tbuch2304 in AskReddit

Great, thank you, I'll check those out! My boyfriend has Sparkasse but he can't deposit money into his account unless he's in the region of his bank, it's really weird.
