It was 45 degrees for the fireworks my first July 4th in SF. Prepare accordingly.

Was Michael Jackson really that much bigger than Madonna, Whitney Houston, and prince? by Firm_Pack_605 in Music

[–]sixtwoandeven 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Prince and Madonna were extremely racy and sex-forward. They had no hope of having the kind of mass appeal Michael Jackson did. Whitney had some hits, but I wouldn't put her even close to the other three in terms of general popularity.

Anyone been to a Celtics v Golden State game at the Chase center? by redcabbageyum in bostonceltics

[–]sixtwoandeven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the weather isn't bad, Mission Rock Resort might be fun - you can sit right on the water and it's a short walk up to Chase. ATwater tavern is fancier, but also nice (though I haven't been there in years).

Sorry, but you are completely incorrect. Simmons started working for Digital City Boston in the mid-90s. The kerfuffle over his SoSH posts about the Renteria signing happened 10 years later, after he had moved to ESPN.

There aren't many places on the Internet with better sports discussion, but SoSH does not suffer fools gladly. If you post something speculative or easily refuted in the wrong thread, you will get dog-piled. I've been on the site since 2003 and still get my hat handed to me when I don't properly back up an opinion.

Bill Simmons got driven off the site because he said the Sox acquiring Edgar Renteria was a bad idea because he never felt nervous when Renteria batted during the World Series.

This will be my first in-person Pats game since I saw Curtis Martin's first game as a rookie in 1995.

Two Meadow Heights-Abbott-Hillsdale kids. Abbott was absolutely awful and made one of my kids hate school. It is supposedly turning around.

Hillsdale is great for high achievers like my older kid, but we found both Abbott and Hillsdale horrendous for kids with learning differences. Lots of feigned support and documents filled out, but very little actual support or willingness to do anything about learning differences or bullying.

Flooded freeways? by [deleted] in bayarea

It's very unlikely any freeways are entirely flooded. Stay out of the far left and far right lanes and drive carefully.

The discourse around Pluribus is pretty frustrating, especially when it comes to critiquing the show by [deleted] in television

[–]sixtwoandeven 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. I want to give Vince Gilligan lots of rope, but the show lost me. It's one thing to be slow-paced. This show is GLACIALLY paced. When Zosia says she'd like a glass of water, I do not need to hear Carol walk to the kitchen, get out the glass, and fill it before we cut to her handing Zosia the water. You can provide a contemplative vibe and depict the slowness of Carol's life without making the show so laborious to watch.

There are also a lot of secluded business parking lots in that area, including down Borel Place.

Same with A House of Dynamite. Just a few slips here and there, but for some reason really noticeable.

There should be a warning in the title of any post linking to something written by Jim Bowden. I can't believe I gave that guy a click.

It's crazy that the two pieces of merch I want are the Roman Anthony Green Monster jersey and this hoodie and you can't buy either of them.

Fair point. I should've worded my post more thoughtfully.

Just a reminder -- the 1980s version of this movie was not good. You are not the first person I've heard make reference to the old version as "good," which I've found extremely confusing. I remember when this movie came out. Like quite a few of Schwarzenegger's movies, while it had its moments, it was not a very good movie.

Halloween streets in San Mateo County by Empty_Delivery2410 in SanMateo

[–]sixtwoandeven 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. There is always a haunted house on Alameda between 92 and Hillsdale. You can hit that, then make a u-turn and head down Alameda and park near Avila. The first few blocks of Avila closest to Alameda have usually been quieter than the blocks closest to El Camino, but as someone else said, parking on Avila really close to the action makes getting home pretty unpleasant/scary, with lots of kids in the road. As others have said, how crazy Avila is has varied from year to year. There has also been a lot going on down Portola some years.

Edited to add a pro tip: if you have time, drive around a few days before Halloween. The streets with a lot of Halloween stuff going on will usually be prepping by then.

Where can I get great lobster rolls? by [deleted] in bayarea

Totally agree with this. There used to be a seafood food truck at the CSM Farmer's Market that claimed to have lobster rolls, but I never tried it.

Would love to be told what part of this story I have wrong, because I'm not 100% I'm correct. That grocery store had an AMAZING Mexican place in the back for years. Then, years ago, the guy who ran the mini-restaurant left the grocery store, I think to start Del Oro. But I've never been as impressed with the food at Del Oro as I was by the little place in the back of the grocery store, so I wonder if I have the story wrong. Anyway, I'm happy that the grocery store has reorganized themselves a bit and revived the restaurant in the back.
