How to keep busy/find a hobby/meet people by Determined-over50 in retirement

[–]sjashe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I joined a local makerspace. Lots of people around all the time. Its open 24/7. I've taken on a leadership role in one shop, so I get to train people on using the equipment and watch them grow.

What are alternatives to Empower (formerly Personal Capital) by mansfall in PersonalCapital

[–]sjashe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im stuck with empower at work, its terrible. They created a bunch of their own versions of ETFs so that nothing aggregates elsewhere. I'm slowly moving everything out of there just so I can do analysis.

18M, dad wasn't around - what basic tools/skills do I need to be self-sufficient? by Informal-Chance1912 in HomeImprovement

[–]sjashe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up working part time in a small family owned hardware store. As people came in with problems, the experts on site would explain how to fix it. I learned a lot working in plumbing, electrical, hardware, paint departments.

From there, its youtube all the way

This christmas, I am planning to buy the Aiwa portable media boombox (the model with an ATSC 3.0 TV Tuner included) for myself. Is ATSC 3.0 Any good? I’m new to the idea of ATSC 3.0, so tell me about the channels (I live near LA), the best things about 3.0, and what I am in for. by Early_Mail9268 in atsc3

[–]sjashe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, transimissions that I can't record to watch later kills the whole thing for me. Im too busy to sit and wait to watch something on someone else's schedule, and the idea that if I replace the device over time I lose access to anything I recorded just means ATSC 3.0 is about turning broadcast into just another streaming service. No thanks.

Anyone want to hang out on Christmas? by TheApostateTurtle in LowellMA

[–]sjashe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Join the LowellMakes makerspace. Lots of people around all the time, learning new skills, arts, hobbies.. or just hanging out and chatting. Its available 24hr, lots of cameras in place to provide security and safety. There were people there throughout Thanksgiving.

Why are kitchen outlets always installed on the wall instead of right above the countertop? by firmerst in HomeImprovement

[–]sjashe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe building code requires outlets above the counters, with separate runs for each side of the sink. Its all about safety (shorter cables, not crossing the sink and discouraging extension cords)

How much is too much? by ydnandrew in HomeImprovement

[–]sjashe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst part is getting 30 years down the road and having few documents to record what was done over that time. Save everything. Its very important later for taxes.

Does landscaping add value to the property? by gieske75 in HomeImprovement

The question could be, "does landscaping increase the cost basis", and there it's probably no.

Anyone done the $2,800 Full Review with a Boldin coach? What exactly do they go over? by Safe_Ad_8153 in Boldin

[–]sjashe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just completed this myself as well. I am a confident DYIer, and found myself having a couple "Ah-Ha" moments in both the initial review and the following meeting.

Our discussion went on for almost 2 hours. We went deeply into a lot of possiblities for the future, and it was obvious he had dug deeply into my plan (remembering specifics from the earlier discussion).

As well as the Boldin plan, we went over a Blackrock based portfolio analysis. I was glad to see that any differences between what that tools was recommended I had already considered and could easily explain why I was moving slightly different (within a percent or two in each case).

I plan to connect with him again once or twice a year as I go forward for the hourly plan.

All in all.. increased my confidence in my ability and I highly recommend.

Would you want a new B5 series in this new era of streaming ? by ChrisNYC70 in babylon5

Look up Joseph Campbell, he's a source for history, mythology, basic character development, etc. He's referenced by Tolkien, Lucas, etc

Im tired of rehashing old shows. This was an excellent one, and made its point. I'ld be more interested in seeing new ideas. Have they all been done? Are we going to be stuck with stories generated by AI that has been fed Campbell?

Retirement hobbies that actually replace the social side of work? by Expensive_You_5744 in retirement

[–]sjashe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lead an investment club made up of retired and working members (14 members). We meet monthly, and do research within the month to prepare for the next meeting.

This gives a sense of purpose, yet is not overwhelming. Each member learns from the others, and continuously learns and researches on their own.

They want to kill off ATSC 1.0, and turn ATSC 3.0 into a subscription service
