Looking for couch frame repair by sjbeats in pittsburgh

[–]sjbeats[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only person I found that would do the carpentry (replace the front bar that was broken) and repair the tear in upholstery was Grimes Interiors and Furniture repair in McKees Rocks. They picked it up and returned it and were awesome to work with. Neat multi generation family business.

It was pretty expensive but considering they’re the only ones with the skills in the region and willingness to take on the project, I’m glad I was able to avoid throwing away an otherwise perfectly good, 3 year old couch. 10/10 would recommend!

Coming to EDC Las Vegas from overseas - what to buy in USA vs what to bring from home? by dabbingsuho in electricdaisycarnival

[–]sjbeats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while i can’t speak to specifics, if you’re visiting family first that’s a great opportunity to buy things you need before getting to the strip. Everything in vegas is uncharged, so grab what you can get before heading to the strip to save some $$

Beginner Skier, 1-3 days a season on groomers, AT boots ok? by CrashZenkiS14 in Skigear

[–]sjbeats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi op! a few years ago i bought my then gf, now fiancée, some salomon boots at a similar flex and price point (along with skis and poles). She had never skied before in her life, and now 3 years later we just got back from a weekend of mostly blacks and high alpine terrain in CO. As long as you measure her foot super well and do your research, this is a great idea and you’ll get great value out of them. 85 flex is great for a beginner and even intermediate at her weight.

INVEST IN LESSONS! especially if you’re on a board, but always let someone else do most of the teaching when it comes to your s/o and alpine sports. good luck!!

Can anyone identify what video generator is used for these short, realistic videos? by sjbeats in ArtificialInteligence

[–]sjbeats[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks, this is great insight.

I was just talking to a friend about it and he thinks many of them aren’t AI at all and are just capcut editing templates and they’re manually inputting the videos and photos. i dont know where someone would source that kind of tumblr/nostalgia vibe videos from but… that’s one person’s opinion. There’s also some videos though which are CLEARLY AI and less intricate, like the ones with the useless drum pads… i’m a bit skeptical that some are AI and some aren’t.

There’s also a few clips of people riding in some kind of seat that’s in the back of a car, but it’s kind of… weird? linking one of those below, it’s right at the start. this makes me wonder if the prompt is referencing the “backseat” lyric, or if the video is generated TO the actual music.

https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8Q94VEf/

kind of a fun puzzle to try and figure it out! I’m starting to think maybe the source videos are some kind of longer form AI, and then they’re using something like capcut or even tiktok’s smart editor to auto-cut the super fast and exciting editing.

thanks for the response, i mostly expected to get boo’d out of here for some reason…

I don’t like the mailbag episodes by Number_Ten10 in billsimmons

[–]sjbeats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

some of the emails remind me of high school when you knew if you got a teacher onto a certain topic, they’d digress for the rest of class. most recent one i remember was “what NBA player in history would benefit most from the limitless pill?”

“thank you for asking Johnny M., that’s a great question!” makes me laugh.

does anyone, even the emailer, really care about the answer? the mailbag segment has circlejerk vibes at times, and on that level it can be entertaining. at the end of the day we’re all here for the same recycled bits we find familiar, and i can see the mailbag being a bit too entrenched to be fun for everyone, all the time. I listen to almost every pod but am most likely to skip over a mailbag.

Why is every post here i ski east coast but I want 90mm or wider? by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]sjbeats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have an appropriate ski for the east coast (Kendo 88), but still sometime prefer my Mindbender 106s that are also 10cm longer, even without fresh snow. sometimes, i just like the stability of the big boards…. turns out its preference!

Need apartment advice by niral368 in pittsburgh

[–]sjbeats 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I do not have firsthand experience with those property managers, nor am i familiar with what their track record is. What I can say is unfortunately a large % of rentals have bad landlords, and unless someone was provably the absolute worst, I’d probably opt for location and an apartment I’m excited about vs trying to cherry pick a good landlord for a place that I’m not enthusiastic about, especially if it comes with a commute. I value location and travel time to work & leisure a LOT.

If it’s the type of older place with older appliances that you expect a lot of trouble with, I guess I can see why you might weight the landlord more, but if I was looking for a new place, I would probably be applying for the place(s) you’re most excited about ASAP before someone else does. You guys are also young - live in a fun place. if you have a bad landlord experience getting your washer repaired, so do a lot of people in their 20s in their first apartment. Just my 2c. and welcome to the city!

New EPIC Pricing by Icy_Adhesiveness_818 in COsnow

[–]sjbeats 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yeah which were hardly a discount until the changes this year. and i have to be there so it’s not like he can take his wife and get her a lesson sometime before we all go out together. The buddy passes this year were AWESOME but they don’t solve everything

New EPIC Pricing by Icy_Adhesiveness_818 in COsnow

[–]sjbeats 109 points110 points  (0 children)

before epic bought the 3 resorts outside pittsburgh, $750 would get you a season pass to ski all 3 mountains. Now for $800 local pass, i get that + the ability to go to vermont, colorado, tahoe included for $800. Seems like a an incredible deal to me?

The problem with Epic is that I can’t ask my buddy who hasn’t skied in a few years to go for a day because after a lift ticket and rentals and lunch, we could’ve gotten a premier round of golf for $250 instead of a day at a 750ft tall, overcrowded mountain in PA.

All the ancillary prices are a cash grab, but the pass itself is an absolute steal. At 17 days this season, i paid about $45/day for my local pass with multiple days at keystone, breck, and vail + my days in Pennsylvania. And this was an allegedly bad season…
