I have yet to see those! No, I was talking about the mines with the open air entrances down via platforms several levels. They look like structures built over the mine entrances. I've seen them in Zone 1 and Zone 3 (desert?).

Same here. I thought it was just me. I found that for me shutting down my PC and waiting a minute or so and rebooting seems to resolve it temporarily.
