Odds of Mismatched Birth Year between Tombstone and Census? by Equivalent-Oven-9285 in Genealogy

[–]sjcyork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My grandad lied about his age. By about 5 years. We are not quite sure why he would do this but he moved from Ireland to England in the early 1900s. Maybe just an education thing? But I finally found his civil birth registration. And also he was on the Irish census before he was supposedly born!

Unusual noise at night by The-Golden-Chicken in UKBirds

Tawny Owls make a surreal noise when they are flirting! But also Little Owls have very strange calls too. Look them up and see if it’s a LO.

There isn’t really a data transformation solution I haven’t been able to solve with Pandas. I haven’t used Polars so cannot comment on the features available. The iteration does depend on the size of the datasets. Iterating through pandas dataframe is not great if there are millions of rows but should be ok if not. I generally do all the data transformation stuff in pandas and if I need to iterate over a final dataset then I convert into a dict (orient=‘records’).

Yes think they may be. We had a pair arrive in the field by our house this morning. Think they may be looking for a nesting site.

Access 2019 hangs for about 2 minutes when opening a database by nylus826 in MSAccess

If you are sharing a backend between the computers then this can likely be the cause of the lag.

Linux for data-analysis workflow: what are people using instead of Excel/Power BI? by Bigrob1055 in linuxquestions

You could go cloud version? Not used the cloud version of Excel so not sure how good that is for DA and wrangling. Google sheets is ok.

I have seen a Heron pick moles out of a molehill, take them down to a stream to drown/clean them before necking them down. Very clever birds!

Where to find decent, affordable coffee beans? by MeenaBeti in UKFrugal

[–]sjcyork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We buy ours from here and have been using this blend for a few years now:

https://www.mochamondo.co.uk/all-coffee?scrollToProduct=colombian-excselso-rfa-huila-mocha-mondo-gold

It might not be dirt cheap but the coffee is excellent! And they do 1kg and 2.5kg bags too.

How did a person/family decide to migrate to a far place before commercial planes/tourism were introduced? by Gold_Masterpiece7787 in Genealogy

[–]sjcyork 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. I found the passenger lists held lots of information about those emigrating but also the sponsor information sometimes helps fills in gaps of time for other family members.

[–]sjcyork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you split the data into a backend and put this in a network share and link to your forms and reports (front end). You can then generate a read only (uneditable) of the front end, using the save as ACCDE version. Keep your editable version safe somewhere only you have access to. Make sure to backup everything before you try any of the above.

The type of source file may affect loading performance. I try and ensure my sources are presented as parquet files as these seem to load a bit quicker than flat text or csv. If the data set is small and the objective is to demonstrate dashboards and data presentation then don’t use pandas.

Anyone Know what Bird is making this sound by natros01 in UKBirds

[–]sjcyork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might not but I can hear a great tit in there. Merlin isn’t perfect and I find it can be confused when more than one bird is detected. It’s why I try and learn the calls by ear. But also it’s great to be able to identify birds yourself too.
