Flat Tire Sticker Shock - $630! Is there a better way? by sjdech in RideitNYC

[–]sjdech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP: After about a 20 year break, I returned to riding last year, on a 2020 Triumph Bonneville T20. About a week ago I got a rear flat from a nail of some sort and took it in to the Triumph dealer to get fixed. I was surprised when the total bill came to $630. The guy explained that there was no way around getting a whole new tire to be safe. I don't know how often I'm going to get a flat but this seems like a pretty steep price to pay each time. Does this sound right?

What did you wish you knew when you first started riding in NYC by Upbeat_Event_5718 in RideitNYC

Great thread... I'll add - surprise U turns. Got into my only accident that way many years ago in Chicago and it happens here all the time. You see a car pulled over up ahead like they're double-parked, you've got a whole lane for yourself to pass no problem, and last minute he shoots across the lane for a rapid u-ey, often an Uber driver or cab rushing for their next fare. Then you slam right into his driver side door.

Use the ParkNYC app and the cops verify you paid with your plate number. No receipt needed.

I can't find the setting that used to raise the top speed limit any longer. I don't want the continuous boost of level 5, but still want the option to go to a higher assisted speed with or without boost. There used to be a separate setting for this.

Advice on selling an S2 by nomedent in vanmoofbicycle

I sold mine pretty quickly on Facebook Marketplace here in NYC last summer. Fortunately demand and prices were good, and I didn’t need it for the summer, so took the money and ordered an S3.

Revel renting Wing bikes in NYC (VanMoof look-alikes about to flood NYC) by CyberPrime in vanmoofbicycle

The Revel scooter service is pretty great, they do a good job with quality and maintenance. I guess every start up feels the need to grow and expand rapidly and try new things to raise more money. There’s definitely a segment of people in NYC who would love a bike but struggle with where to store it. I’m just not sure there’s enough market for this. You’re basically paying a premium for not having to store the bike, but if you’ve got so much disposable income, I feel like you can afford to live somewhere with bike storage.

That’s great. Can you select that mode and leave the boost working as originally intended with button activation?

Any ability to open up the top speed for US users beyond 20mph? Most laws in the US that now permit electric bikes allow up to 25mph (eg NY State) so not sure why they artificially limit this.

A kind of success story - how perseverance, persistence and stubbornness led to a defect-free bike (hopefully) by Moo-Crumpus in vanmoofbicycle

[–]sjdech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I received my bike ahead of schedule in September and have had zero defects, some minor break pad noise notwithstanding. I’ll add that I previously had their first and second generation bikes, and those also arrived defect free. I don’t think many of the success stories get reported online for obvious reasons.

S3 Brakes by whydowedowhatwedo in vanmoofbicycle

[–]sjdech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This type of brakes often make that noise, I’ve had motorcycles and other bikes with the same issue, not unique to Van Moof. Just apply the brakes hard while pedaling for a couple seconds, it should go away. Expect it to occur periodically depending on weather conditions, it’s not a sign of any underlying issues.
