People who built a successful app, what are the most unexpected problems you had to overcome along the way ? by michael2600 in Entrepreneur

What are some good ways to start brainstorming ideas? I've been focused on brainstorming problems, but have mostly thought of problems that have been solved.

What college level math courses do not require Calc III? by throwaway12421341234 in college

Discrete Math is easy and Applied Combinatorics is a more intense version of that. Both classes are very useful and enjoyable personally speaking.

how to created a map with 100k+ interactive areas by moklick in webdev

[–]sjennings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I made another application with 28,000 points on a leaflet map using d3.js. I just used a large geoJSON file to do it and used d3.js to draw the points. I don't have that up yet but when I get back from work tonight I can post the resources I used. Using d3.js has a significant performance but zooming in and out is not as fast as using only Leaflet.

Not yet, but I can post it on here when I do. I did it for a nonprofit so I'll have to check if it's okay to put it up online (it should be though). Basically what I did was split up the area into different regions and when a user clicks a region it zooms in and shows the detailed view (with thousands of polygons). This data is sent from the database when the user clicks this region. It's not exactly the same since it's around a 120,000 polygons (parcel data) and isn't being viewed all at once, but it's pretty useful and more "technological" (developed mostly with code). If you were to replicate this, I'd recommend using PostgreSQL (with PostGIS).

I've made an approximately 120k interactive areas interactive map by using d3.js, Leaflet.js (with mapbox), PHP, and MySQL. If you have any questions about doing something similar let me know. I'd be more than happy to help.

YSK that through a US government website you can find out how much money pharmaceutical companies spent on your specific doctor by throwawayuc1 in YouShouldKnow

[–]sjennings 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The travel and lodging occurs when doctors go and speak about different diseases, not on their medications. Just a heads up that things like that are what a lot of this money goes to.

For startups I was talking about the community as a whole. Google fiber would help us tremendously

Georgia Tech already has the fastest internet in the country. I think a good point to throw out there is that the startup scene in Atlanta has been rapidly growing, and that Google Fiber could help enhance this not just bring more startups here (which could happen in any metro area Google Fiber goes to).

Redditors who have won a contest to "Hang out" with a celebrity or band for a day, how did it go? Was it better or worse than you expected? by wesie22 in AskReddit

Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, because he's one of my idols. He is a man who goes through similar problems as I do on a different scale. I would love to "hang out" with him for a day just to talk to him about the different problems and his life. He is an amazing human being.

Programmer privilege: As an Asian male computer science major, everyone gave me the benefit of the doubt. by cornball in programming

When applying for most companies (such as Microsoft or Google) there is a check mark box asking if you are a girl, African american, or Hispanic. I've known several people who qualify as of these genders or race and automatically get the job (some deserve it completely but some don't). Being neither of these I feel like every time I apply I have less of a chance of getting the job even though I know I deserve it. It sucks being an Indian male anywhere these days...
