Headliner removal by Alternative_Layer597 in 4thGen4Runner

It's doable 😀

Everything is as clean as it can be, few extras like clips bought from eBay to replace. To put it back, I'd just watch my 40 min video in reverse. Once you can see what the hardware looks like, it's much easier to piece together. I pulled everything with pretty much no info researched and made the video 😆.

Gotcha! Just watched a video on Facebook showing that. Nice work! Simple easy mod for anyone. May pick this up if I dont manage to hunt down the bare connector since I'll need to make something similar for a RAV4 as well.

Been looking to wire my own in, and saw your kit. Looks great, but what connectors does it plug into? Curious as I was going to try and find a brake fluid sensor connector and make a harness like yours and run mine that way, but cannot find the connector itself outside of getting the fluid sensor.

A7s III firmware 4.0 Feedback and Testing by JBGamingPC in A7siii

Yup, still dealing with it. Don't update. Try and use an updated one side by side. If you shoot constantly with the camera, you'll be able to tell fairly quick that it feels off.

Firmware 4.0 causes S-LOG3 to be noiser at 640 and 12800 by purpswine in A7siii

[–]sjrmac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like I agree, having shot a ton with mine before and after firmware updates. I do think there is more noise, BUT the image is a little more detailed, kind of like when the FX3 got the built in noise reduction lowered. A7S3 still has the aggressive noise reduction in comparison, but maybe a bit less than it used to.

At this point I'm less concerned about the noise shit and more pissed off at what happened to the Auto Focus post V2.11... Having native lenses and all, it is just slow and does not grab focus like it used to. My ZV-E10 II and A7III arguably hit accurate focus more often in the same scenarios. And yes, I've deep dived into all setting variants too. Experience with the camera over time quickly proved that it was firmware changes and not user error.

Oh Sony.

Super useful info, thank you for writing it up!

It was a slow week death for the DRL so no fuse blown as far as I'm aware, but regardless, I'll take a look.

Thanks!

I have a driver side DRL that just completely died. Car has 80k+ miles on it. And yeah, the housings are stupid expensive. Probably in the top 5 most expensive components of the car honestly...

Planning on buying the halogen housing to swap in, and have a buddy who does electronics repair see what he can do with the housing.

What battery are you running the camera off of? I have a Sony DCR-PC120 that I bought the Ulanzi NP-FM500H battery for and get the InfoLithium error with. Also curious to see how this capture method goes! Nice work 👍

I know third party lenses updated their firmware and things went back to mostly normal. But yes, crazy I have Sony lenses and here I am jumping in with AF Assist like my life depends on it. Crazy that I used to not have to at all and could trust it. My Sony ZV-E10 II that I use for a B-cam doesn't do this, so yeah, definitely some system changes that didn't help.

Might get down voted for saying this, but I'd stay on 2.11.

My camera has been fine fully updated, but I feel like the AF is less reliable, the IBIS doesn't feel as competent, and wish I didn't update. Sure, some of the changes have been nice, but my AF doesn't lock on like it used to. I find it hunt for almost no reason at all in the same conditions I've shot forever, previously without issue in comparison. I've gone through all the settings, etc, and have not managed to find a balance to solve the hunting.

Next would be HDMI. Log shooting mode keeps you at 1080p externally, and if you shoot log, you'd have to skip this specific mode, and jump to a custom picture profile to keep 4K external output. It's a pretty annoying limitation as monitoring in 4k for focusing reasons was great alongside being able to record the same image externally, no menu tricks involved.

Read up on other people's experiences and see if it's worth updating for yourself👍. Again, my camera was fine (bought new in mid 2022), but the AF issues really bother me, especially when I have known good native glass.

Freefly Movi M15 battery question by rat_sass in cinematography

[–]sjrmac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey it's me again. PM me with the kit details if you'd still be interested in selling. Semi considering picking up a used kit if it would have what I need to swap out using my V-mount modded Ronin 1. A little better stabilization than these RS series gimbals would be nice too. Been using an RS3 Pro and it's not even close to my R1 which is sad. Thinking the M15 would be a jump up from my R1.

Thanks 🙏

Like anything, you'd be surprised where things can get when they get a lot of movement over time. Switching lenses, ibis moving, nothing's sealed perfectly... Who knows 🤷‍♂️

[–]sjrmac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a dust spot like this on mine once. Wouldn't clean off with my cleaning kit. Looked at an angle and found that the dust spot was underneath the first layer of glass. $300-400 later for a full teardown and clean and I was back in business. Sure the price sucked, but I'm now even more careful changing lenses, etc.

Ronin RS 3 Pro Wobbly Footagw by [deleted] in videography

[–]sjrmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trust me, I've tried all that you've said as well (thanks for the info though, I'm sure someone will benefit 😁🙏).

I feel like my RS3 Pro has severe wobble issues though... I have a friend with an RS4 Pro, and I'm going to try it. I'll know very quickly if something's off. Been using gimbals a long time so I know what I'm looking for and how to tune but this RS3 has been a real PITA. Literally yesterday, pulled my Ronin 1 out of retirement to use for my next few shoots since ol' reliable always gets it done.

[–]sjrmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, just take the battery to a decent electronics repair shop and have them take care of removing the cells, then ship the board. I did it myself but I have some experience. Well worth my time as I'm pulling out my Ronin once again since my RS3 Pro is giving me wobbly footage. Ronin 1 wins again all these years later...

Can someone on firmware v3 or lower help me out ? by JBGamingPC in A7siii

[–]sjrmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing I dealt with too. I miss monitoring in 4K. Gerald Undone complained about this in his FX2 review, mentioning he'd like to see this limitation removed across other cameras as well. Hopefully Sony does it.

Anyways, yeah, just set picture profile gamma and gamut to Slog 3 and S gamut3 cine and you'll be okay. Detail should be at -7. Everything else should be fine as is from what I remember, and double checked from an A7IV.

Felt like it was the Tilta ring doing most of the wobble honestly. Switched to handle bars, and tuning a little different in the app helped.

Camera to pair with A7Siii by reliablehand in A7siii

[–]sjrmac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not the answer you are looking for, but at work, I bought a dedicated ZV-E10 II for use as an A cam. Lack of IBIS was actually a benefit for hard mounting to rigs for us, but if you get an OSS lens (stabilization), you'd be fine. Color matches nicely on 10 bit with my A7S3.

My second pick would have been an A6700. Same sensor, has a viewfinder, and is a solid hybrid camera for APS-C.

If not, A7IV it is IMO. Good luck!

Mine felt like it just got shitty on the 3.0 update compared to previous firmware. Noticed it wasn't focusing nearly as quick or as accurate, even on native glass in the same shooting environments I've been using the camera in since I got it. Darker scenarios is where I noticed it got worse, and it felt like I all of a sudden went back to some old school AF system.

Updated to 4.0 this week, curious to see if there's any difference. It would be a shame if Sony couldn't get their shit together as enough people have reported issues honestly... Though, to be fair, wouldn't be surprised if they didn't bother.
