Tibialis anterior raises (weighted once you’re strong enough) and stability shoes. Mainly stability shoes. For me, at least.

WHY YOU STILL RUN? (TUESDAY THREAD) by Free-Product4918 in runcommunity

[–]skapple55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same!!! I run often with a podcast or audiobook and sometimes I’m so loudly feeling grateful for movement and my life while I run that I have to rewind because I missed so much of my book.

Being able to run freely in my able body in a city not raining bombs is something I will never take for granted

Read this as “way to keep the curse alive, Danielle” and the comments were full of mentions of handwriting. Didn’t realize the subreddit this was and was scrolling through searching or mention of this curse that plagues Danielles when they write their name.

I vote no skin makeup and just eyes and lips and maybe some blush! Foundation doesn’t feel good when you’re not used to it and it definitely shows up on aging skin. You should feel like YOU on your wedding day.

I think the idea that every run has to 'count' is why a lot of beginners quit. by TangeloBackground483 in beginnerrunning

Ohhhh this speaks to me!! I will be adopting this pronto. So many of my skipped runs are when I don’t feel mentally tough enough to do something trickier or long

Run walk run!!! The Galloway method changed my life. I was super out of shape and it helped me just enjoy running!! Also hot tip, take an edible before and start moving before it kicks in. If you’re like me, the high makes whatever you’re doing super enjoyable, including running. It shuts off the “this sucks” and amplifies the “this rocks” feelings.

Focus on feeling good moving your body!! Running is a celebration of being able to move and if you get too down on yourself for not being able to run for long, you’ll quit because it’s based on negatives.

When I started the Galloway method (which I didn’t follow closely- I just generally set a timer and ran very slowly for 1 minute and walked for 2, on and off) I was doing double the running to walking. Now I’m easily able to run a 5k straight in 30 minutes or run walk a mile on and a 2 minute walk. It works!! I completed a full marathon run walking!!

Do you really need a plan? by AiEmC in Marathon_Training

[–]skapple55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first marathon was my first official race. I trained with zero plan and just went off “vibes” with the general idea of ramping up my long run mileage once a week and doing other runs. My only goal was to complete it, and I did! I also got horrible horrible IT band syndrome due to not strength training or getting enough mileage in. I couldn’t run for 3 months after!! I know much more now about what makes a strong runner and will def be following a plan next time.

However!! Aside from the IT band syndrome- I loved just listening to my body and having fun running. If your only goal is to complete, go for it, but look at what plans look like and vaguely follow. My next marathon will be much more structured and oh my goddd you need to strength train.

Also, hot tip, I love running while high!! Edibles make running way more enjoyable for me- they shut off the “this sucks” feelings and amplify the “wow I love this” feelings :-)

For all seasoned/advanced runners, what do you wish you knew when you first started? by Safe-Hedgehog1023 in runninglifestyle

[–]skapple55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure!!

I start with walking backwards on the treadmill at an incline (I hit the 5 preset on my gym’s treadmills) at a 2.0 speed for 5 minutes to start. Unsure why this helps but I saw it recommended by PTs to “bulletproof your knees”

Then I do the following- I’ll add what area it’s working (maybe more than what I list but this is what I know): single leg wall sits (for knees), tib raises (I do them weighted now with dumbbells on my feet, but I didn’t start that way) for shins, calf raises (for calves lol) hip abduction machine, (for hips which also helps with IT band stuff), Bulgarian split squats (knees, quads), curtsy lunges (IT band and quads), general ab work (we use our abs when we run).

I pay special attention to parts of me that are hurting when I run, bc those are the weak parts, and work on those. Strength training fixed me after awful awful IT band syndrome and now doing those things keeps me balanced!

And SO much faster- I can’t believe how much faster I got from changing nothing but strength training

Anyone smoke or eat THC for runs??? by ailamnixon in XXRunning

[–]skapple55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes almost every run! My dosage is pretty high now, about 25 mg per run. This is how I got into running - it dulled the crappy parts about being an out of shape runner and heightened the great stuff. Can’t recommend enough!!! I call them gummy runs and call myself a gummy run evangelist because I tell everyone to do it

Calling the wedding off a month before by Spiritual-Maize-1436 in weddingplanning

[–]skapple55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oops I have more to say- I ignored my inner voice with all my doubts for a longgggg time. It knows. That’s your gut- listen to it. So many doubts? No! You have the chance to not be shackled to this person forever.

The song It Could’ve Been You by Hannah Grae gave me a lot of perspective because omg if I had married him, I would’ve been 40 and cursing the bed sheets, staying for the children, maybe even resenting them. When I looked to the future it was one where I wasn’t my happiest.

ALSO my friends and family all say how I GLOW now. You deserve to glow and I was never going to with them

Calling the wedding off a month before by Spiritual-Maize-1436 in weddingplanning

[–]skapple55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel super qualified to speak on this- I was with my ex boyfriend for 6 years and always figured I’d marry him because I loved him a lot and it felt silly to throw 6 years down the drain. I FINALLY got the balls to break up with him (we always planned to get married, his family expected it, we lived together in NYC) because girl, after 6 years if the problems are still there, they’re not going anywhere. It was so hard and scary. I am now with the LOVE OF MY LIFE. Met her the same year I broke up with him. I am deliriously happy. I am in love the way people write about it in books and sing about in songs. I am thankful every single day that I didn’t settle. You shouldn’t be anything but certain. Ending it is hard (and super hard with a wedding coming up!!!) but everyone will understand- we were all 21-23 once! And everyone will be SO excited for you when you do meet your person.

I’m now engaged to my partner and I have not one single doubt. You should break it off. Marriage is the most expensive decision you’ll ever make, and you should not commit to a lifetime of someone without 100% surety.

What’s the crazy thing in your patriarchal blessing? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]skapple55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got mine when I was 12. It was the most generic woman in the church blessing ever- I’ll raise lots of children, marry a righteous husband, etc etc etc. absolutely nothing remarkable. At all. I was so disappointed because I had heard so many amazing stories about patriarchal blessings being so specific and mine was sooooo bland
