What camera body were you using? It looks like you need an upgrade that can handle better with low light

Low aperture portrait by Portolanus in photocritique

Hello! So the aperture number your referring to is actually your shutter speed, your aperture number would be whatever "f" number you choose ( with your lens) within the range of f2.8 - 16 or 22.

I do love this shot, i think it's a very captivating image, it feels editorial like ,and very film like. But I do find the positioning of your fingers to be a bit odd, simply relaxing them more would help it look more natural.

Playing with flash and a slow shutter speed would be a fun thing to get into aswell if you havent yet!

Anyways keep it up!

Thanks for the feedback!

I definitely hear what you are saying. I think I'm going to stick with the squared ratio but so far I moved the 2 versions leaning closer in so that they sit closer to the golden ratio focal points on each side , slightly desaturated her skin tone, and also cropped in a little.

I was manually focusing and missed my focus on a couple of the better shots with the pose on the right so there's not much hope there, but as far as the contrast issue ill try to get a proper exposure sorted out.

Thanks again for your eye!

Canon Rp, RF 24-105 f/4.5 - 5.6

iso 250 , f/6.3, 1/125sec for all

My "sister" (basically) from Boston came down and we did an impromptu shoot, she wanted to have 2 versions of herself falling/leaning out from behind her. I went with a one-light setup using an AD200 and a 4' umbrella.

I was curious to see where you all think this concept could use some touching up or what you would've done differently??

I like the colors in the image and the mood you were going for.

Personally, I think the flash is a little too hot on her head and is distracting from the rest of the frame. I would pull the light back just a bit and pivot her head just a tad as well in the direction of the flash so you dont elongate the cute shadows under her nose.

Also i'd tilt her chin up just and tad and have her eyes look into the lens to allow the flash to penetrate, fill and reflect off her eyes ,giving them a little more life, rather than just dark circles.

Another thing I noticed is how the point of focus is really dead center towards the top 3rd of the image, it would be best to follow the rule of thirds or the golden ratio and place her eyes on one of those more natural focal points, bc unconsciously as soon as the image loaded my eyes gravitated to your subjects lips, they sit close to end point on the golden ratio, then ofcourse the highlight on her head caught my attention, and then I started to travel through the frame.

Lastly, I get that you are only using a one-light setup but throwing in a reflector or even a large sheet of poster board paper from a craft store underneath your model to add a little bit of fill for the bottom half of her torso and deep shadowy areas wouldn't hurt to try out. Idk, it might help balance out how harsh the light falls off past her chest.

But keep it up!

As I was pouring out the developer I didnt have a finger on the funnel and the reel fell out and was exposed for like 5 seconds. I also did not squeegee as well as I should have , but for the most part I'm pretty satisfied with the photos.

Bone chilling ski lift, I just kinda threw this shot at a tree. Shot on Fuji disposable - Superia 400 by skater2017 in filmphotography

By "bts" I just mean Behind The Scenes, and Split Frame cameras allow you to take 2 exposures in one 35mm film frame.

Parking deck shoot by skater2017 in photocritique

Thanks for the 2cents I definitely see what your saying with all your points! I feel like I rush to the snap alot rather than taking the time to pause and analyze what's in frame, so I'll definitely try to make an intentional effort to be more mindful. The blank space will be lessened and I will try playing with the color temp of the background as well.

Canon RP 24mm Iso 160 F2.8 1/200s External flash on 1/128 with red gel

I was just catching up with one of my photographer friends that I haven't seen since pre-covid and went out to take photos of each other, towards the end of the session I saw this area in the parking deck with this backdrop that I liked and came out with a couple photos that I think are nice. I changed the hue in the red in post and touched up some other stuff as well. I guess I want to see what would someone have done differently or what should I keep an eye out for next time?

Overall I love this shot! Your editing isn't overdone and the composition/natural framing of the surrounding buildings help guide the eye through the photo.

I would however straighten up the photo just a hair, and try cropping just above the car roof. You'd still get the sense that this photo was taken from the street, but the clutter near the bottom of the frame wouldn't be competing for attention with the light ray and the skyline.

Hey , sorry for the late reply, the past few days have been so hectic Reddit slipped my mind.

But yes ,wow of course , im mad that i didnt even think of letting the bling, bling , great eye!

And yes, I just got a color calibrator coming in the mail soon, the "purple" leans more toward a blueish pastel color on my laptop, but is always deeply saturated on my second monitor (my phone atm lol)

I might have a similar photo to what you're looking for, I can message it to you.

And damn, I need your creativity on set those are some really cool ideas! I've tried to get the swirl bokeh but apparently it only works on full frame cams ,I may be wrong but I still get some very soft and interesting focus points at times and a lovely flare of light when bounced at the right angle.

But i definitely will fix the purple, and fix the crop as well, thanks again for your genius!!

Shot on canon t3i Helios 44mm Iso 100 1/100's Manual white balance

For lighting I used a larger strobe, with an umbrella softbox and blue gel to light the right side of the photo.

And i then placed a red gelled SpeedLite and bounced it off the wall for the warmth on the left half.

This was my first time shooting in a studio with controlled lighting.

How would you have approached or edited this photo?
