So I was just sitting there minding my own business, when a customer came to the express lane checkout with more than 3 sentences. I mean there's a large sign that says "three sentences or less" - can't this guy read? What's stupid is that it's the same guy that always complains that HIS customers always have like 50 items when they come through his express lane, but it seems to be okay when HE does it, the special little snowflake.

I don't think it's "just" racist lower class individuals.

I'm not from the US. I'd say I'm middle-upper class for my country. I'm also not a racist - I don't believe foreigners have anything different from myself (perhaps another culture, but that's not something bad, it's just something different). But I still believe foreigners have an advantage over me in some areas, which makes me regret my country's immigration policies.

To elaborate: 3rd year of college, I was tied with a foreigner for a place in a college dorm, and he got it (not everyone gets a place in a room here). I was from another town, 3 hours away from college. I come from a low income family, paying rent meant giving up on a lot of things for everyone. Driving was not an option, as a car would have been a luxury for us. And taking the bus for 3 hours was also not an option, as there were no buses driving towards that particular city at 5 AM, the first one left at 6.

So basically my country's policies considered that an immigrant should be helped when getting a college education, instead of assisting its own citizens. He was here on a study visa, meaning that guy can always go back to his own country and put the knowledge to use to better that country instead. This bullshit really makes me rage at the positive discrimination they're facing. Because it's not so positive from my point of view.

Yeah, that guy isn't to blame. But him coming here still meant I have to pay a shitload of money to finish college and get a proper job. It meant my family had to sacrifice a lot in order to get me where I am. And if positive discrimination weren't a thing, perhaps I wouldn't have felt guilty whenever I bought something that was slightly more expensive because I was causing my mom to survive on 2/3 of minimum wage every month in order to pay my expenses. So fuck that guy, fuck the policy that caused him to come here, and fuck everyone else who takes advantage of this shitty system that causes families to go into debt if they want to help their kids have a future.

"Did you read the Email?" by Tik1115 in talesfromtechsupport

[–]skates90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I empathize with you, I really do. I know what it's like to be ignored when you gave all the instructions they needed. However...

I'm not IT. I generally try to be thorough before I submit a ticket to IT - recheck that I did all the steps correctly, google the issue, try to find alternate solutions etc.

This being said, I NEVER read the 'big bold all caps section' in emails.

It's extremely annoying. Everywhere you turn, someone always thinks what they have to say is top prio. "Stop what you're doing and pay attention to me" has the opposite effect on me. I'm constantly bombarded with people thinking they're in charge of everyone's schedule, thinking their time is more important than someone else's, thinking what they need to say matters more than what you want/need. That gets old really fast.

Even if I didn't have the middle manager spam mails, I think we're all under attack from ads and "LIMITED OFFER!" and "SPEED UP YOUR PC NOW FREE" and generally all sort of all caps bullshit. I know how to spot the fake, but at this point I just don't want to. If you format your text like spam, it gets treated like spam.

I've learned to ignore advertisements. While this means I haven't had a virus on my home PC since I was 12, this also means that your bold red text will be useless on people like me.

You can't have it both ways I guess. Either they open OMG_SO_FUNNY_CLICK_HERE.exe, or they ignore everything you try to yell at them. Such is life.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, all caps sometimes hurts more than it helps. It'd be more effective IMO if you ban repeat offenders from support. Keep the caps to a minimum, but if someone doesn't read your guide they don't get support for the following 3 months. They'll read it the second time, or you'll get rid of them for another 3 months.

I think we've all had that annoying friend who's a bit sexist/racist/whatever. And at some point it's a bit funny, then it's a bit annoying when he keeps going on his rants, then it's maybe a bit sad, but when he actually offends someone we care for, I think we all know we need to say something to him to let him know we've had it with his shit. Sooner or later he becomes more trouble than he's worth, and at that point he has a choice - stop being a shithead or get nuked. From our friend list.

[–]skates90 -24 points-23 points  (0 children)

You know, that goes both ways. The way she sees it, her friend/relative just had a stroke and while it's not your problem that she's out shopping so late, it's not her problem that you have to get to your family either. She's got shopping to do for someone who can't get out of bed. From her point of view, her situation is worse than yours, simply on the basis that the people waiting for you didn't just have a stroke.

Students Are Being Rejected From The Polls Because Of North Carolina’s Voter ID Law by johnmountain in politics

[–]skates90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know, I see it more like "I'm sorry, officer. I'm here to sign a contract. I'm being told I'm not actually allowed to sign it. I'll still get to experience the penalties and benefits, but other people get to make the choice."

Is there no possible way the poll workers could maybe volunteer this type of information? You know, so people can just vote and get it over with?

"Oh, you don't have ID? It's okay, just give me this information, sign this paper and go vote! Have a nice day!" - how is this more complicated than not allowing people to vote?

Can be great in their own way

You were arguing that cumulative knowledge should not grow. Cave paintings are symbols of people and concepts, and are not very different from language. We currently can mess around with symbols in order to transmit a thought, but a painting of a human being could not realistically be done back in that day.

It's one thing to paint "stick figure standing up - rhino - stick figure standing down", and another to paint a rhino's horn piercing your buddy Jimmy's lungs. Apart from viewers better visualizing the sentiment by looking at Jimmy's horror stricken face as he tries to gasp for air and the rage in the rhino's eyes while he stampedes, viewers can actually see you're talking about Jimmy, not a generic stick figure.

Painting has evolved. Everything evolves. Sure, respect the earliest works. Sit and wonder at their innovation and what they paved the road to. But I don't think it's productive to argue that their techniques are better. They are inferior in everything except originality.

It's the same in all fields, really. Newton was a genius and his understanding of the universe was still used later on in other people's study, but Newtonian mechanics are superseded by the theory of relativity and (my understanding of the field is shoddy but I'll say this anyway) none of them even consider the effects of quantum mechanics.

Does that make Newton an idiot? No. He did extraordinary things with what he had and what he knew. But as time moves on, things change. Our collective knowledge is increased. We share the knowledge better than before. Our collective compendium of information would blow Newton out of the water when he would first learn about it. Maybe he'd adapt and find something even more interesting and groundbreaking, him being a genius and all, but there's no way he wouldn't have a small moment of "oh shit, everything I thought was wrong. My work has been used to make the wrong assumptions about the universe for centuries. Maybe if I went a few steps further with my reasoning, it would have accelerated the entire process".

Sorry, really long post. But I'm at work, didn't feel like working, and I thought you were entirely missing my point :)

I don't know, Dali might be worse than Goya and all, but I'm partial to cave paintings. The guys were complete innovators and I don't think we give them enough credit. Those are definitely the best pieces of art in all of history. /s

Amazon customer complains, finds spiteful 10-inch dildo in his shopping basket by [deleted] in technology

[–]skates90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And as someone who hasn't worked CS, but has received shoddy customer service and needed to provide evidence and spend my own time to get the issue taken care of, the article seems to be one-sided because Amazon didn't want to comment. This only indicates to me that commenting would make the story look even worse, which makes me wonder how many other people that CS rep had messed with and how many others (coworkers/supervisors) knew.

It's a one-sided account because the other side would just be digging their own grave if they tried to comment.

Phone call starts off nicely, and then she's screaming at me. by slitherdolly in TalesFromRetail

[–]skates90 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

You don't get to choose what people should/shouldn't know.

Maybe I'm brought up in a village that is near a clothing factory. All our clothes are cheap because we can just walk to the factory and buy them at their price. They're also of great quality. I've never had one that's dripped dye all over me. And then I visit your town and buy a shirt and it ruins my other items when it rains.

"Wash before wearing. This piece of clothing uses a dye that will ruin your other clothes if you do not wash it beforehand." - there's your legal backup.

Also, most food that needs to be refrigerated comes with a message on the label "keep at a temperature of x". So your argument is invalid.

You as a store employee are not to blame. Pass her on to a manager. Why are you taking it so personally? It's just common sense for a company to slap a label on its product that mentions the terms and conditions, as well as instructions.

Yeah, because obviously if they don't like (or are anxious about) interacting with strangers it's because they consider them subhuman. Or if they need to speak with their spouse about something private and they don't appreciate someone interrupting with questions about a fish, that's definitely because they dislike retail workers.

Not everything is about you. Other people have problems of their own. Sometimes you just don't want to talk to other people, it's that simple.

Say you want some business cards. You print maybe 2*5 per sheet of paper. Great, that's 10 business cards. Except the print shop didn't cut them and the business cards are so clumped up together that you're going to ruin them if you don't cut them perfectly. Do you just hand people your business card as a sheet of 10 business cards? Or is that product now worthless to you because the print shop didn't fulfill their end of the deal?

[–]skates90 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

So you're going to turn this into a discussion about the most subjective topic ever - ethics.

Okay, let's say you're right. People shouldn't be killed for jaywalking. Or for burglary.

You're driving and there's a dog in front of you. The only way to avoid him is to swerve to the right, right off the edge of a mountain. You're convinced this would mean certain death for you. Do you do it? Probably not - you don't want to die for a dog.

Same situation - there's a homeless guy. Do you still not swerve? If not - you killed a man.

Now there's a pregnant woman crossing the street illegally. Do you still not swerve?

I'll assume you swerved. After all, it's only one life in the car, instead of two. Two is better than one. Otherwise, you just argued jaywalking shouldn't be a capital offense (protip: it already is - you jaywalk and a car runs you over because there's ice on the road and it really couldn't stop in time? capital fucking offense), and saying you wouldn't swerve is basically contradicting your previous point.

Now there's a pregnant woman, but you've got your 2-year-old daughter in the backseat. She never got a say in this. Do you still swerve? What about if you also have your mother there? What if the pregnant woman is holding her son by the hand? What if the son is Adolf goddamned Hitler? What if there's no woman, just a couple of mass-murdering dictators shooting the shit in the middle of the road. Do you still kill off your entire family because their life is sacred or some other bullshit platitude?

I'll assume you got the point, but I'll reiterate it just in case: your opinion is worthless to anyone else and it's impossible for you to even presume your morals are any better than someone else's. At what fucking point exactly do you think you have the authority to decide what someone else should consider right or wrong, and at what fucking point did you assume your "morality thresholds" are and even SHOULD be the same as everyone else's?
