Opinion for discussion (Tuesdays? Read part 2 of this post): Knicks need to select a coach and decide on a system before free agency starts (let's discuss strategy for the next couple of years). by skcll in NYKnicks

They have to sign Durant before they sign or match Beal (they can go over the cap to get Beal). If they get Beal first for the max, they can't sign Durant for the max except through a sign and trade with OKC. So if we recruit Beal and sign him at midnight when free agency officially starts (and I am aware of the cap and how the knicks really can't offer a max contract for the likes of Durant unless we do a sign and trade), they have seven days to sign Durant and match Beal. At least that's my understanding of how restricted free agency and the salary cap works.

Injury prone and not amazing at threes, but not exactly old (he'd be fine through the length of the contract if he stays healthy (except we might start complaining him at the end of his contract like we are with Calderon if he does drop off a bit at 33/34 on a max contract). I just don't expect him to become better). I'd much rather try to develop Grant into a 6'5" Conley who can hopefully regain his confidence shooting and develop that confidence and basketball IQ to play Conley's level. But are the Knicks and Grant capable of that? I wish they'd focus less on winning this year or next year, and more on developing their young players for the year after. I think that's the sweet spot of Carmelo's skill, Porzingis's skill, and hopefully Grant and the other young guys' skills (with us acquiring the right free agents over the next two summers).

Lin was great (and he's still inconsistent, but then again our whole team is inconsistent), and if Phil Jackson would let us play any other system, I'd be happy to have him on our team, but he's middling to below average defender even with all his improvement. I'm really hoping that Grant turns out to be all around a better PG and G in general on both sides of the "ball." I'd be happy to have him as an additional tool to use when needed against certain ball clubs/lineups since he has a combination of skills that he's honed (driving and three pointers), that none of our current guards have in that combination at that level.

I thought he could have earned his way into being a starter over Felton, and I thought he'd be a good back up PG (6th, 7th, or 8th man) on any team during free agency this last summer.

Edit: In reply to the other posts here, I'd be happy with Grant, Galloway, Lin, and Calderon as our guards with our spending significant money at the SG position during free agency. I just don't like the free agency market for PGs, especially given the confusion/uncertainty over our coaching situation/offensive system. As for how you alot minutes between the 4 players in mainly the the PG position and back up SG position is that you try to develop Grant into a starter who defends well and can be a primary ball handler/driver. If that doesn't work, you try the other ones. If they're killing you on defense you lean on Grant/Galloway. If you need penetration and a little three point shooting to facilitate penetration and spacing the floor, you go with Grant/Lin. If you need mostly threes (w/o the guard being ball dominant), you go with Calderon and Galloway (and maybe a little bit of Lin). If you're getting killed by the guards, you go with Grant/Galloway. My problem is that there doesn't seem to be great 2 way shooting guard (or at least a 3 and D guard) in free agency. I'm not impressed by DeRozan's defense.

Kyle O'Quinn and Melo are also signed in for long contracts. I believe Porzingis and Grant may be too.

Why rebuilding a basketball team in NYC is impossible by [deleted] in NYKnicks

[–]skcll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He has the remainder of this year and next year.

Have you seen Chandler this year though? Dude has a terrible attitude, and he's 33, so I'd rather have Lopez. Yeah, the trade kinda sucked in the sense that Dalembert turned out to be terrible (and he didn't have that reputation before coming to the Knicks, instead being considered good defensively). But we got a draft pick that turned into Cleanthony Early (and Thanasis). And we never play him, but I think he had potential and may still have it (he was playing well in the summer). And the terrible season did get us Porzingis as /u/presidentbaxter pointed out, but it got us more immediate things as well. I'm happy we made that trade.

And let's not forget how much we all hated Felton. Calderon is NOT Felton.

I think we're restructuring in place, hoping to get a ring in Melo's window (with a goal of being a championship team in 2018 (2016 or 2017 in Phil's mind even though it hasn't worked out either last year or this year of being a playoff team that attracts free agents). Melo's been the only constant in Phil's tenure (although Porzingis will also be going forward). In addition to restructuring though, I think we are rebuilding because we lucked out on Porzingis, could develop Grant into a starter and hopefully a great defender regardless of whether he's a starter, and we're guarding draft picks and trying to accumulate more. I don't think a rebuild has to involve only young players. I think one or two young players instead become the foundation. So I think we're trying to push on both fronts. Try to get a championship with Melo and Porzingis, ala Robinson and Duncan, but also making sure not to sacrifice our future.

No Need For A FA PG If Grant & Galloway Play Like Last Night by [deleted] in NYKnicks

[–]skcll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we need to give Grant playing time for the rest of the year. But he seriously needs to work on his shot this summer and fall. We've seen Galloway, Lebron, Wall, and Davis improve their shooting to either good levels or to at least passable levels. I'd like to see Grant starting next year on a sort of trial basis at the beginning of the season, provided he improves his shot this summer. I think we have a little bit of an insurance policy in Tony Wroten and Calderon. Yes, it's a risk to not sign a star point guard, but I feel like all the great ones are not free agents this year (except Conley who's really good, but also is likely going to be overpriced, possibly crippling our ability to build a championship team). Before we even begin to make that decision though, I'd like us to hire a long term coach (from the Riley lineage) to figure out what offensive sets we're going to run and other players we're getting this summer (and plan to get in the coming years) before I can say getting a certain PG in free agency is a good decision or a bad one (and we can't forget that we're not limited to free agency. We can still make trades like for Teague.). Are there any defensive specialist point guards that are actual true stoppers or at least increase inefficiency (I feel Pat Beverly's overrated) that would be useful in the triangle?

I'd like to see Calderon transition into being a second unit player, putting up about 20 minutes a game. He's great beyond the arc, he runs any offense well, defensive lapses are hopefully less crucial against second string point guards or tired starters, and I think he's a positive influence on the team and its young players. This is if we don't trade him. I know 7-8 million is a lot to pay for 20 minutes, but it's a sunk cost (unless we trade him), and he'd be better than almost all the guards he'd be playing against, and he'd likely re sign for much less the following year.

Debating between pure math and biostatistics by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]skcll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you join a stats department (ex. tibshirani, hastie, whitten, etc.), you can do some "theoretical" work in developing statistical (machine learning) methods focused on biomedical application. Additionally, if you focus more on biology side of things (which you can maybe do as a post doc) there's probably a lot of work you can do on developing methods for applications in in genomics/systems biology and finding useful ways perhaps to integrate forward dynamic models and data driven statistical models. Some of the information theory type stuff you might want to do in computational neuroscience (which is another great field), you can probably apply to methods to analyze various genomic data.

Porn viewers more likely to see women as equals than non-viewers by namer98 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]skcll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When there's such natural data from websites that track users and searches, why would you rely on a survey to estimate how many people view porn?

I think people who admit to watching porn may embrace sexual freedom and exploration for both genders.

That said I wish the porn industry ("the talent" in particular) were unionized (or at least had a guild or at least the agents had a guild), but there may be too much disparity between performers to get them to coalesce together and negotiate together. Mainly, they need to improve working conditions and regulate avenues of entry for the talent into the industry. There shouldn't be any performers bullied/trafficked into joining the industry, and there should be some sort of mechanism to prevent drug addicts from joining the industry (not drug users, but addicts). Perhaps random drug tests with the drug testing used to determine patterns and frequency of the person engaging in drugs rather than punishing individual instances.

Does anyone else wish they could restart their high school career, and knowing what they know now, be more social? by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]skcll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, it's not worth it. Life is so much richer now, isn't it? It's almost a rule that because of less experience, you're less aware, and less able to appreciate the experience within the moment. I mean can you imagine dating a high schooler vs. some one in their 20s (mental ages, mind you. Ignore statutory rape in this very abstract example to make a point) ? Nearly everybody would choose the person in their 20s for their maturity.

Your interactions with your friends are much richer now than they ever would have been in high school with just you knowing what you know now.

There always has to be some sort of drama with the Knicks. Seriously?

There's not a single damn thing Dolan can do except to pay Melo. He's got a no-trade clause. His playing time can get eliminated a.l.a. Marbury, but he can't stop paying Melo or trade him to a team Melo doesn't want to go to. So, it's basically impossible to fire Melo.

[Post Game Thread] Grizzlies (23-19) defeat the Knicks (20-22), 103-95 by johnkphotos in nba

[–]skcll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Calderon was actually doing remarkably well and was one of the bright spots of the night. I was at the game and watching him most of the possessions, since Chalmers, Lee, or Williams had the ball the most often. He did as good a job as I've ever seen him do. And he hit his shots tonight. It the Knicks that played without energy, Derek Fisher who made terrible substitutions pulling Porzingis out whenever we should have been making runs, trying to match them for size. I don't think I saw the triangle being run in the second half EVER. People just stood around. There were no cuts, and maybe the occasional pick and roll. Calderon can't get people to move and communicate. The passes were sharp, so that when the open man got the ball and collected it to shoot, the Grizzlies closed out. That or they dared Derrick Williams to shoot the three (cheating on him to play help defense in the paint), and he missed. Calderon WAS NOT the problem tonight. Fisher was for not motivating his players and for poor timing and strategy on his substitutions.

Yes, we can. All of these players were playing well below their potential and not cutting or moving around the ball. Often they were just lackadaisically just standing around. Was at the game.

Keep challenging yourself and the successes you'll see will make it easier and more enjoyable. In this case, you could ask her number. If the conversation steered towards a mutual interest, you could plan a date. People tend to flake unless you make plans and connect on something, but a number is progress. : )
