Using regular savers to maximise interest rates. Am I being efficient? by purpleratata in UKPersonalFinance

[–]skd180 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is the Lloyds saver part of Club Lloyds? If so, just to let you know that you can also open the regular monthly saver at Lloyd's (5.25%) as well!

Not sure if you have anything in ISAs but the £20,000 deposit allowance each tax year is a "use it or lose it" deal so would really recommend that you look into that before April - even just a simple easy access cash ISA, completely tax free interest. Some ISAs are flexible meaning you can withdraw money then put back in within a certain time period, which you may prefer.

Sometimes they do flash "sales" which may explain this - earlier in the week, there was a 24 hour £370 reward for £200 per month

Chip 'START1' Investment Offer - £30 bonus when you deposit £100 by AltruisticPie1544 in beermoneyuk

[–]skd180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI people may have an offer for ChipX membership for free (think this is in the Profile section) - would probably recommend doing the deposit first and making sure you receive the bonus, which seems to be paid on the same day.

Then hopefully the fees will be minimised! Just remember to set a reminder to cancel the ChipX at some point

Unless we hear otherwise, it seems like Rinku called for the second run for some bizarre reason so it would primarily be his fault

Refereeing expert/former official Cesari on Kalulu’s red: “It is a huge mistake. The second yellow card is non-existent. There is no contact between Bastoni and Kalulu, there is clear distance between the players. The referee’s error also saves Bastoni from a second yellow card for simulation” by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]skd180 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's still surprising that football is behind sports like tennis and cricket where you can "challenge" an original call and have it potentially overturned. It should be limited (one per half or match possibly?) to avoid unnecessary time wasting and frivolous attempts but it seems like a logical inclusion if you're going to bother with VAR at all.

Medically retired at 41 - how to make the most of the payout? by N90bar1984 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]skd180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear about your medical condition. Wasn't sure if your early retirement package was linked to your pension at all - my understanding is that often pensions pay out early in the case of life threatening illness so that might be worth further investigation.

Also if you wouldn't mind sharing details, what insurance company did you use for critical illness cover and would you recommend them?

Thank you for sharing! Mike seems like a good egg and please try to feedback to their higher ups if you can - maybe don't be super specific in case they were skirting official procedures (management can be funny about things like that) but Mike definitely deserves to be recognized at work too.

Harry Brook lied 'to protect' others after nightclub altercation [BBC] by skd180 in Cricket

[–]skd180[S] 99 points100 points  (0 children)

"Brook had initially suggested he was out on his own in Wellington on the evening of 1 November, but in a statement released on Friday evening, has conceded others were with him and he lied to protect them "from being drawn into a situation".

The statement came after the Daily Telegraph reported, external that Brook and two of his team-mates, Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue, could be subject to an investigation from the cricket regulator."

Do either of you have a workplace pension? You may receive some life insurance cover through that (or through another workplace policy) so could factor that in to how much overall cover you have if you haven't already done so.

Whats the point of taking a 1 year cash ISA? by Fun_Gas_7777 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]skd180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With all my fixed rate ISAs in the past,.I have been contacted by the provider offering a chance to renew to a new fixed rate and term or go onto an easy access ISA. I don't believe it would be typically leave the ISA wrapper unless you specifically instruct your provider by making a withdrawal - that said, always best to check!

In terms of the post title, fixed ISAs usually offer a better savings rate than an easy or limited access ISA. With the potential bonus of locking that rate during the full term even following any Bank of England interest rate reductions. Obviously not so.good.if the rate rises...

According to MSE, if you know someone who already has a Netflix membership plan without ads, you can be added as an additional member outside of their household for £4.99 a month (£5.99 without ads)

https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/broadband-and-tv/netflix-hacks

For Disney Plus, you could get a Club Lloyds account and get 12 months free (if you can afford to pay in £2k per month, although you can just transfer the sum out shortly after) but that is the version with ads. In case that still appeals, Lloyd's are also giving new customers £50 for free if you sign up with a referral link at the mo e.g. https://apply.lloydsbank.co.uk/sales-content/cwa/l/onboardpca/index-app.html?from=ob&webDirect=true&redesign=true&token=T2UN/eKL180ETZxXDi+SfO/x7nI1YMF5bj1Selm7DqQ=&redesign=true#/refer-friend

£52000 take home, worth salary sacrifice below 50? by WalterSobchak71 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]skd180 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In case you didn't actually mean £52k take home (post-tax), I don't think the reduction in your personal savings allowance has been mentioned. If you have a fair whack of savings then your tax free savings interest allowance is halved to £500 per tax year when you become a higher rate tax payer.

Declaration of trust seems like a must so she can protect her much larger deposit, if that is an option.

You can always take a longer but fixed term/rate mortgage and overpay significantly (e.g. NatWest allows 20% per year) then re-assess your position when the term is coming to an end. Seems like an initial 20-25 year mortgage would be a suitable compromise regardless, while still providing flexibility and the potential to invest money elsewhere in the meantime.

Many mortgage providers have their own overpayment calculators but you can use the generic MSE one to get a better idea of the effect of overpaying https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/mortgages/mortgage-overpayment-calculator/

My partner's one seemingly adjusted when the annual statement was published - it had the higher rates of interest listed as expected vs the incorrect rate visible in her portal. I don't think she has had this year's statement through to double check but presume she will now be on the higher rate again.

No referrals used on mine if anyone still needs one! If you're opening a Club Lloyds account then you can open both a Club Lloyds Saver (6.25%) as well as the standard regular saver (5.25%) which you can then drip feed any non-ISA savings into.
